Griffith B of Mid

HJ - I don't know that anything guarantees you into a B of Midi these days. It depends on what kind of response they have I guess. I am also doing a doula course : and will most likely do a personal competencies statement to help my application.

Mrs T - will be great to have study buddies even before Uni starts!!! Here's to all of us getting into B of Mid at Griffith.

DAMN! if only they introduced this 4 years ago! im doing my master is mid but had to do my RN:s first which i still absolutely LOVE doing and i come out with so much experience and have 2 professions behind me but would have saved me some time and money! good luck girls! you will love it!

Can someone explain this in laymans terms for me "The program is offered full-time in the following mode: a combination of one (1) on-campus intensive mode at the Logan campus and two (2) off-campus, online learning between intensive periods and three (3) extensive compulsory clinical placements"

and if i applied for Griffith at the Logan campus - do u think i could get placement closer to home?

21andTTC#1 - How far thru are u now? i was thinking of doing combined nursing and midwifery, but the midwifery is the part that really interests me!

hj - they mean you can do it full time on campus, like i do where u attend all classes, OR you can do most subjects online and only attend the campus for exams and one off lectures, and with the placements u just give them your postcode and they put u at the closest hospital they go as far as even redbank and beaudesert, ive been to 3 different hospitals and am looking to go to the royal womens this year. oh when it says option 3 thats compulsory for everyone, the placements, which can be up to 8 weeks at a time for no money! it sucks but worth it in the end

I am waiting to hear about what that means too. I'm not sure about where you could do placements. You could call the Logan Campus and ask to speak to Jenny Gamble who is in charge of the midwifery units there.

21 - woo hoo i thought it meant that but than i thought it sounded too good to be true!
i like the idea of the online bit - would be sooo much easier with a little one!
as for the placements - bring that part on (if i get in) i cant wait, and not getting paid dosent bother me its what i want to do!

if you are over 21 you can get into uni on whats called "adult entry" so your high school grades dont count, although this course will be soooo popular and it also depends on how many students they take, if its a new course they may only take 40 or 50 to trial it, the masters of midwifery only has about 50 students in it it is very competitive and is based on previous bachelor of RN grades. I dont want to make u guys think u have no chance, by all means no! just a heads up! and if they have heaps of interest they will most likely allow more students in as the years go by, in my first year there was about 80 RN students now they allow approx 150 in each year! there is always away and griffith is a very helpful great uni, they have daycare at logan campus, im pretty sure ive seen a kindy there although i dont know if its just for staff but will be finding out come september for me! also 2 of my friends just had bubs and bring them into lectures in the pram, they dont mind there logan campus is the best, always has parking and easy to find where to go, even has a hairdresser!

I am using my stat test, my ATP course and a PCA to hopefully get a place for 2010. If I don't get in next year then will re-examine what my path will be.

HJ - I spoke to the midwifery course convenor and she said that it highly likely that the pre-req would be the norm - english and a science.
I decided to go with CBI for my doula course as I was told they tend to delve deeper into the physiology and anatomy of a pregnant woman which I thought would hopefully give me a good head start for midi.

I'm enrolled in the course but haven't done any of it yet as I was focusing on my tafe unit. Id really recommend doing a science as it will prepare you for what's ahead. My SIL is a midwife and she also did the ATP course and apparently the lecturers notice a difference in those who have done it and those who are straight out of school or have not studied before. I figured I had nothing to lose whether or not it made a difference to the lecturers! It's given me a glimpse of what will be expected and also helped me sort out my studying skills and organisation!

Anyway I hope all of my ramblings help some!

mama - you should be able to apply for credit points towards the degree, im not exactly sure how it works though. sounds like u are on the right track though, and yes they do alot of science stuff, you have labs and everything, dont know about this course but i would assume its the same, they have these dummies with baby dolls in them to practice with, so not the same but a good learning tool.

Unfortunately you have to do the language and learning unit before you can do the biology. YOu can do a science unit on its own if you go through OUA (open universities Australia). NOt too sure what that entails though.

I'm not good at exams , and only got a ranking of 73 , I can't actually remember what the test was like!!!! There are practice stat tests online. Go on to the QTAC website and it should hvae some info on there.

Hi Lovely ladies, isn't it awesome that Griffith are starting BMid next year. I'm another hopeful to get in, although I'm sure the competition is going to be tough!

I got accepted into BMid at ACU last year but turned down my spot because realistically it was going to be too hard going from GC to Bne 4 days a week. I'm 31 and got in based on my grades from High School. My TER is 80 and although I did biology in grade 12 I did not do it in all of grade 11 as I swapped from secretarial studies if my memory serves me correctly. I wonder if that would hinder my chances of getting into Griffith? Like 21andTTC#1 said I'm sure the competition will be tough. I remember the first year UQ offered BMid you had to have a TER of 92 or better and now I think it's down to about an 86 or better. ACU on the other hand, I think the cut off was 76 or 77?

I have spoken to Jenny Gamble on a few occasions previously and she said she was going to offer BMid part-time also, but I notice on the GU website it says full-time only. can someone please let me know if they happen to find out whether part-time will be possible?

21andTTC#1 are you starting your MMid this year? Out of interests sake how many follow-throughs do you need for MMid? I was a follow through for a MMid student back in 07 when I had bub at PIndara but I never did get to ask her how many of us she needed in total. When I have another bub I'd like to be a follow-through again. It's a great experience.

PS: I'm currently doing a doula course as well. Through Optimum birth. And it looks like I 'll be a student to my first lovely couple in May. I'm so excited!

Spice - did u find ACU easy to get into? do u know what the timetable was like?

Hi hj

ACU is the easier one to get into. You need only english as a pre requisite and the TER/OP cut off is 76/12.

It is only a small uni so not much flexability as far as the timetable goes. When I got mine it required me to go to Uni 4 days a week and the Friday was just for a 45 minute lecture at 3.45 in the arvo. Initially when I called the Uni to ask if I could just get a copy of the lecture notes, they told me no, I had to go to the lectures but I have since found out that yes you can get the lecture notes
Also I have spoken to someone who is currently doing BMid at ACU and she managed to streamline the timetable a little better by doing some of the nursing subjects with the nursing students instead of with the BMid students.
If you go to ACU you can also do your prac at John Flynn, which is great for us Gold Coasters.

I wish BMid was easy to get into.........

I know i need to do some studies of some sort but im really lost at what to do - sounds bad i know but i dont want to spend my time studying something if its not going to help me get in!
BMid is what i really want to do and i know it not just a passing phase, but its just getting up the courage to take that jump and start working towards it that im finding hard! Im not good at going out of my comfort zone if you know what i mean!

Hi hj, perhaps you could do some nursing subjects through tafe to increase you're ranking? Or sit the STAT test like mumasurpha suggested?

HJ - I was exactly the same , found it so overwhelming to know what was the best option for me and wasn't sure how it would help me. I'd recommend that whatever you do you start asap, just so that you can do it well and have completed whatever you choose to do (if it be study) before you apply for 2010 so that they can have your marks to support your application. Depending on what my marks are for my science and computing units I may sit the STAT test again. THe good thing is that it doesn't matter how many stat tests you do ( 2per year is all they offer though) they will always take your highest score. I can then use my stat test score to combine with the grades I get for my adult tertiary prep course to get my entrance score for the course.

I think the hardest thing is not knowing what kind of cutoff they will have at Griffith with it being a new course! Ahhh the joys! Good luck , looking forward to hearing what you decide. Please feel free to ask any q's! (not that I necessarily know what i'm talking about! )
