Default Reflux coming back after months

Hi Everyone,

My wee man is just nearly 18 months. He had silent reflux from an early age and was put onto Losec. He is still on Losec used to be on 20mg now on 10mg.We tried weaning him down to 5 mg a few months ago but we noticed a few reflux symptoms return so will try again in another month or so.He was the worst sleeper ever awake at least 5 to 7 times a night and impossible to settle. It was a nightmare.A few months ago he started to slowly sleep better and better until now he pretty much sleeps through the night which is a miracle. The things I think did it was stopping breastfeeding ( he had weaned himself anyway) learning to fall asleep on his own and growing out of reflux.

However just in the past few weeks the odd night he is waking very suddenly crying and screaming.I thought it might be night terrors but now I am not so sure.Last night was the worst in months. He woke at 12.30 and never really resettled all night.Seemed very uncomfortable and restless.I think as well hes a wee bit more cranky during the day.I am terrified the reflux is coming back.He eats pretty much everything now eggs, fish, wheat and has done for ages.He has a wee bit of dairy on his spread and has never caused problems. Our doctor told us he can't eat dairy while taking Losec has anyone else heard this.Does anyone else have experience of reflux returning after such a long time.I also wondered if maybe hes been on Losec too long and thats causing stomach problems.

Thanks so much
Hilary

Hey Hilary,

I was just reading some past posts and wondered how you were getting on. I stumbled across this post of yours.
My little one is 17 months and I find when I cut his losec down he starts waking. He is usually ok for the first week, which I gather is the losec coming out of his system. Then he becomes cranky and start waking. When I up his dose he is ok again. I have never had reflux however my mum has and said it is really painful. So my experience as a mum, not as a medical professional, is to keep them on it if they are suffering. I hate the thought of him being on it for ever, but its better than them suffering I guess.
My health care nurse did say to me sever cases of silent reflux can take till they are about 3 years old to grow out of it. Fingers crossed.

I hear your frustration.
Hope all is ok with your husband too.

xx
