Reflux AND Colic *sob sob*

Poor little Elijah has reflux and colic. Things just went off the rails last night where he screamed and fussed like no tomorrow and I knew it was more than just reflux.

I am booking in to see a paed here in Melbourne who is apparently really good and specilises in reflux, colic and other sensitivities so looking forward to going, my little man is not at all happy. No wonder I felt so ill and run down yesterday!

I actually read a post Christy posted about her experience with reflux and in desperation did a one off feed last night of the new Karicare formula (HD-AH?) and when he finally took to it, he had a good drink and slept until I think 1am or 3am (it was all blurred!) so it was such a relief. Don't want to formula feed yet as I think the reflux and colic can be helped in other ways yet (or I can at least try!!!).

For those that have been through reflux and colic, what helped you? I have ordered some Brauer Colic Relief should be here tomorrow as I hear lots of good things about that too!

Oh Kelly, you poor chook. I hope that the specialist can help and that little Elijah is ok. Poor little blighter!

With Alana she has been bottle feed. But we bought Dr Brown bottles. It helps with reducing the air in the milk as she drank. It certainly made a difference, with the change of formula (NAN 1 HA). No more projectile vomits!

She still gets terrible wind every so often. It causes her so much pain. She will just cry and cry. I can generally tell when she will get really bad as she hasn't done a poo and she is farting non stop! I have been using gripe water, which kind of works, but unfortunately I usually just have to cuddle her through it. Luckly it never last to long.

I hope your little man gets better and the specialist can help.

I re-read my post and had to clarify something that sounded awful!!! The only reason I went for the formula was because I did something so silly! I was feeling really unwell all day, felt very similar to when I had mastitis with Ris, hot and cold sweats, aches and pains, drained and couldn't eat - so I thought having been so full of milk, I would express it and maybe it might stop me getting it. I expressed waaaaay too much and because I was too unwell to get up and sterilise the bottle, I had to throw away my 100ml of expressed milk! So I thought he was hungry and I didn't have enough milk for him.

I hope no-one rushes out and buys formula thinking it fixes reflux and colic because it doesn't - it should be seen to by a doctor if your little one appears to have either conditions! Sorry I didn't explain properly!

I just found out the paed I was referred to has just retired too! Bummer. I am on the lookout for another good specialist in the meantime Also going to try Chiro I think.

oh Kelly!! Big Hugs!! You are doing so well! Matilda's reflux only started settling once she was on meds, and if we miss them she will still scream for hours... I hope that the paed you finally get to will help!!

I found the brauer to be great, but the best thing for Matilda was the infants friend mix...it helped settle her!

I breastfed Matilda until she was 16 weeks with one formula feed a night so I could get more than 2 hours straight sleep, so it is possible with reflux to bf and I have no doubts about that, there is a thickener you can buy to add to expressed breast milk... its by karicare as well and its around $10 a can. I did that a few times as well.

Elijah has been getting worse So we took him back to the doctors today who is referring us to a specialist gastroenterologist, as Elijah is not happy at all. Hopefully we'll be able to get an appointment early next week. Also took him to the chiropractor today to see if that helps, he's going back Tuesday so hoping there will be improvement. I think he might have a sensitivity to something I am eating, as I was doing the colic diet thing and now I stopped, it's gotten worse. But who knows. The colic diet is so hard. ](*,) Has anyone else tried the diet for colic (e.g. no dairy, caffeine, citrus, fish etc?)

Anyways, I am going to get some sleep now, haven't had hardly any of that lately as Ris has gastro too but today she's stopped vomiting but still lots of runny poos the poor bubba. Both are now asleep so I am going to take advantage!

Oh Kelly, huge :hugs: to you...

Unfortunately I do not have any good advice to give... For Aidyns wind & tummy pains we used Infacol wind drops which worked ok when he was younger, but still didnt work all the time.

Best of luck seeing the specialist, I really, really hope he can give some good advice, and you can all get back on track feeling better, and finally getting some rest.

Please take care and try to take it as easy as you can (I know easier said than done...)

Oh Kelly I hope things get better!! I did try the colic diet with Matilda for a week while she was still bf...and truthfully I saw no difference at all!

I hope the chiropractor helps! And the specialist doesn't want to do anything too invasive! I had one Dr want to refer me but another GP took over Matilda's case & we haven't had to go...

How are things now with Elijah Kelly??

I noticed that you said something about sterilising a bottle for your EBM. You don't have to sterilise bottles if they have EBM....only if you use formula, so you'll save yourself some time and effort there matey!!

I hope Elijah's relux and colic has eased....poor little man.

I think my little girl millana may have bad wind too.I remember the nurses at the hospital saying i have a windy baby.Yesterday was nitemare city and she cried most of the day.She was farting and burping an hour or more after a feed. I formula feed as my milk never came through,i tried expressing and can only give small amount my breasts produce.I use s26 gold but am going to try the nans as its easier to digest apparently.I have gripe water(non alcohol) but she is only 3 weeks and you have to be a month old.Anyone given gripe water earlier.The health care nurse says its okay but i just dont know.She generally gets it in the afternoon.

I started Matilda on infants friend at 2 weeks... don't know about gripe water though... oh & I also tried Marena's mixture and both helped heaps with wind... and the nurse told me about giving around 10 mls of warm water & that helped heaps too! Goodluck!

Sorry I haven't replied to this post!!! We're still doing around two bottles a day and then breastfeeds otherwise (inc. overnight) but he still has reflux moreso with breastfeeds than anything - the more breastfeeds in a row the worse it gets, so I try and alternate. He also has wind pretty bad an hour or two after a feed (again moreso with breastmilk) - he doesn't cry just is very uncomfortable and kicks about lots. MCHN says it's just the lactose in breastmilk and it will pass soon. I haven't given him Zantac for a bit as he doesn't like it (hardly ever cries but when he has zantac he cries his heart out). He's also doing better coping with reflux - he isn't unsettled with it unless he's also eaten too much.

Brauer colic relief has been great with the wind as has been cooled boiled water (around 10ml like Christy). How's everyone else doing?

no more wind on this side of things... lol I hope not at 6 and a bit months! But reflux is still really bad... in fact heaps worse than it has been in the past.... ](*,) just when you find something that works, something else triggers more off....

i found nans has made a bit of a difference to millana,i find that she kicks and grizzles for about a couple of hours before she does a bowel action and does lots of farts.Sometimes when she passes wind she cries.her stolls are normal.Is this because she is frightened of her own farts(sound and sensations).Also is hiccupping normal at 6 weeks of age.Generally she gets the hiccups at least once or twice during the day as a result from a feed and then trying to burp.or is it something more sinister like rflux or colic?

hiccups are completely normal...Matilda still gets them, and I was told that if they had them in the womb they are more regular in the first year :-k not sure on that one, but she still gets them & they don't upset her... the reflux is where she regurgitates & most of the time now vomits & she starts screaming because the stomach acids burn her throat... and then the screaming triggers the reflux & it becomes a viscious cycle...so as long as Milliana isn't in pain its good.

im sure she must be okay as she is not screaming like she is in pain or anything.probably me over reacting!
