Exclamation Metformin Help!

Hi I have just been diagnosed as having PCOS and my doctor wants to put me on metformin. Apparently it will help me dramatically loose weight as well as treat my insulin levels.
Has this helped anyone conceive in the past and so I can get an idea, how much weight (if any) did you loose by going on metformin.
And how long did it take for you to lose weight?
thanks for the input in advance.

TBH - and I know you're probably not gonna wanna hear this! - I was on Metformin for 12 months, and not only did I not lose any weight, I was sick for the whole time. Some people don't respond to Metformin, you can try the slow release which might be gentler if you have a problem, but I know a fair few women who just can't take it.

Sorry

I'm a metformin success story

I wasn't overweight, but was diagnosed with PCOS. Specialist reckoned I'd reached a weight which triggered the imbalance of hormones & insulin resistance. Didn't have to be overweight for it apparently! My cycle went from very irregular to completely disappearing for about 10 months. Started on metformin, had my first bleed after 6 weeks, and fell pregnant on the 2nd cycle.

The plan was to start on metformin and then go onto clomid, but since metformin re-established my cycle, we just went with that for TTC.

Hope you have some success with it. I can't quite remember, but I didn't have many side effects from it I don't think, my dr started me on a low dose for 2 weeks and then upped it. Apparently helps if you ease into your dosage, reduces the side effects.

I conceived after taking metformin for a couple of months. I also lost some weight while I was on it.

I don't really know how much the metformin helped, because I pretty much concieved as soon as we started trying (lucky!), and I was losing weight already in the earlier part of that year.

Didn't give me any side effects at all, that I remember.

Hi Gizzmo,

I've been on Metformin for several years for PCOS. I also didn't have any side-affects at all. My doc also started me on a low dose and I built up over a few weeks.

Unfortunately it didn't help me lose weight, I have done that myself recently with damn hard work!!! Sadly, I haven't gotten PG either.

I guess the best piece of advice I could give you is ... don't wait for a miracle. Work hard on losing some weight as this will make your chances of getting PG and staying PG a lot higher.

Goodluck with it and hope you have no problems..

I am a Metformin success... I was diagnosed with PCOS a month after having an Implanon removed (2 bars used over 6 years) I was started on Metformin on the 5/10/08 and AF arrived on the 14/10/08. My first cycle was annovulatory and 35 days long, my second cycle was ovulatory and also the cycle when I fell pg (we are due in September 2009).

I did lose a little bit of weight whilst on Metformin but it is hard to say whether it was the Metformin or the hard work I was putting in at the gym.

All the best for your TTC journey.

Thanks MsPink and Tk.
I am getting alot of mixed success's with metformin. Hopefully I am like you TK and get a success.
I am definatly trying to lose weight without metformin and in the last 7 weeks have lost just over 10 kilo's which I am extreamly happy with. I would still like to lose anoth 20 though and have given myself until May to acheive this as this is when we are going to start again with IUI.
A big congratulation TK on you pg as I know last time I was on we did the 2ww
together.
I have just got home from the dr and he thought it was a great idea for me to start metformin. I actually got a bit of a shock when he weighed me cause I have lost another 2.2 kilos in the last 2 weeks. so go me!!!!
I will let you all know how I'm going on the metformin but for those that did lose weight how much did you lose????
Also I might change my ticker to the weightloss one

xx

Gizzmo - I thought it was you from the TTC 1-6months thread but I am so bad with names that I didn't want to make a fool of myself!

Congrats on the weightloss - that is an awesome achievement! Definitely go you!

hi I was diagnosed with PCOS with all the symptoms without the cysts and also insulin resistance was very bad. I weighed 100kgs when we conceived.

I saw a dietician and ate a low GI diet lost 8-10kgs over about 3 months I think I went onto clomid from my FS and concieved however miscarried, he said it was due to my lack of progesterone he said metformin would help carry a long term sucessful pregnancy for me. So went on Metformin for 6 months lost another 10kgs and Clomid for the last 4 months and conceived Julia. The sucess worked for me my OB thought as I ate a very good low GI diet while taking Metformin and gave up caffine. I also ate Low GI through the pregnancy and weighed 110kgs the day of Julia's birth. I week after birth I lost 13kgs and 4 weeks after that lost 10kgs. long winded but being on Metformin and eating low gi I lost 23kgs all up. I must go back on it again!

Goodluck with your journey.
