Default First ingestion of solids caused pain and wind - WDID?

DD is almost 6 months, 2 weeks. We started BLS last week and she's tried carrot, sweet potato and broccoli. Until yesterday she's just sucked on foods and then pushed them out of her mouth. She wasn't too impressed with the taste of the carrot or sweet potato but seemed very keen on the broccoli florets. Yesterday I think she swallowed some broccoli - if she did, it was only about a level teaspoon worth. She also had a tiny bit of water from a sippy cup.

Last night she screamed and writhed for hours and was awake most of the night. She seemed to be trying to expel wind and i could hear her tummy gurgling heaps. Poor little mite was so distressed and needless to say, so was I.

Do you think that this indicates an intolerance to broccoli - ie. should i avoid that and persist with BLS?

Or is it that her digestive system may not be ready for solids altogether and I should hold off for a few more weeks before trying again?

Or... is it possible it was the water - either the flouride etc., a bug or taking in air when she gulped it?? (She was burped lots afterwards so I think all the wind came up, but I'd seriously racking my brain here!!).

What do you think? I'd appreciate any advice or experiences.

Kat, that must have been very distressing for you both.

It could have been any of those things you mentioned - it is so hard to know. Had the water been boiled?

Does she seem to be enjoying playing with the food? If so, perhpas continue with the BLS while avoiding broccoli and see what happens. If she is uncomfortable again then it would probably be best to hold off for a few weeks and then try again.

Hopefully this is just a once-off.
