Chlomid

The IVF specialist I went to see last week had a go at my gyno because she's had me on Chlomid for 10 months and hasnt prescribed metmorfin. This doc says that Chlomid is only effective in the first 6 months and after this time your body becomes immune. She explained it as working on a probability scale ie, your chances of conceiving gradually increase in first 3 months then begin to decrease in the second 3 months - so peak would be at 3 month mark.

She said taking Chlomid for more than 6 months apparently thickens the cervical mucus and can also prevent implantation therefore hindering conception instead of helping. She also said that long term use can increase chances of developing ovarian cancer.

Has anyone ever heard this before???

Hmm I was told something similar to that, but not that your body actually becomes immune to it. I was told that if clomid's going to work then it'll usually do so within 6 cycles, and that it can result in less fertile CM and can sometimes cause a thinner uterine lining. I did notice much less EWCM than usual when I was on clomid to TTC Kynan but my OBGYN measured my lining and it was 10.1mm on CD16 which was fantastic so I didn't have any probs there. HTH.

hi there yes, Im not sure who your specialist is I saw a specialist in the city Dr Mark Bowman, he would only allow me to be on the clomid for 4 cycles only due to increase in ovarian cancer, I m/c on Clomid and he prescribed Metformin in conjuction with clomid for me after a 2 month cycle break and I now have a successful pregnancy. Are you know taking Metformin?

Not on Metformin yet. Doing some tests first then she will decide whether Met is necessary to take while we're trying IUI.

Angel - she did mention thinning of the uterine lining too but I was never tested for it by my obgyn. I dont know why she didnt mention any of these issues - I suppose I should have done some more research but I just trusted all her decisions and suggestions.

Now my mind is full of what ifs - could I have already fallen pg if i'd been on Metformin from the beginning? I know I shouldn't dwell on it - I'll just have to move on to the next step with a positive attitude.

Bring on the IUI and hope with all my heart that it works!!

Tina, have you started IUI? reason I ask is that Metformin can help alone before doing IUI thats what we did.. Metformin takes a few cycles to work. Took us 4 months of taking Metformin to be successful in conjunction with Clomid without IUI. IUI was going to be our next step. Hope this helps I totally understand how frustrated you feel.

Hi Tina. Sorry to hear that you have had so much trouble with your previous gyno. You should google clomid and read up about it and other fertility treatments. It may help you understand and give you a few questions you might like to ask your current dr. Yes clomid can increase chances of cervical cancer, also the higher the dose of clomid you go on the thicker your mucus gets kind of working against itself of falling pregnant. That is why dr's start you at the lowest dose and move you up until they find a level at ahich you ovulate. Clomid worked for us on the third cycle. I wasnt trying metformin myself, but plan on going on it after this pregnancy.
