Default TTC #2 - how long did you wait?

I was just wondering how long you waited between #1 and TTC with IVF your #2. We'd quite like to have a smallish age gap between our children and our chances of falling pg naturally are very slim. So how soon could I start IVF again (we don't have any frosties left)? When do you choose to start and why?

Also, DS is only 2 months old, so we aren't thinking of starting in the immediate future!

HI Ruth08,

Firsty ahhhhh, I just spent ten minutes typing a reply & I lost it, so here goes again!!!

As we knew we wanted a close gap between children, I stopped breastfeeding when my daughter was 6.5 months (she is 14 months now) as I knew they wouldn't let you proceed whilst still feeding. We fall into 'unexplained' category so talked about trying naturally for ahile but then decided to go fertility treatment.

We had appt with our FS when she was 7 months & they done fresh blood tests, sperm tests etc. We still had 2 embys in the freezer so proceeded to a FET which resulted in a BFN. We then attempted another FET when our daughter Abbey was about 10 months but as the emby didn't thaw that cycle was cancelled. I then went to start a fresh IVF cycle last month but they discovered a hormone producing cyst on my ovary so it was cancelled before it even started! We are now hoping that we'll be good to go a fresh cycle in the next couple of weeks.

My thinking is that you just don't know how long it will be before you get a BFP so we thought let's start trying as soon as possible. So really it's already been 7 months since we decided to start & we have only managed one cycle. So, this is exactly why we decided to start things sooner rather than later!!

It's such a personal decision, isn't it? So many things to weigh up. I basically figured out what my minimum age gap was and went from there.

I wanted to breastfeed at least 12 months and didn't want babies closer than 2 years apart, and, probably most importantly, I really didn't want to go back to IVF within 12 months, so decided to wait till DS was one and see.
But then I didn't get af back till 16.5m and wanted to give natural a try before heading back to IVF - we plan to do that early next year. So DS will be nearly 2 by then.

I do worry that we've left it too late - what if it takes another 3 years after that? - but then I also worried about stopping bf early and still no baby....can't win hey?

Wish you two all the best with TTC No.2

wow, thinking of number two, so scary. my sis had 12 months between her first and second, both natural preg,. i would not reccommend this. about 2 years is good, but i suppose the scary thing is, you don't know how long it will take to get BFP. only you will know. good luck to you . xx oo

i also agree that you will not know how long it will take to fall with #2!

I am a perfect example. My DD was conceived 3 months after having lap surgery and endo removal in February 2004. She was born in Feb 2005 and is simply perfect. We waited until she was 18 months before starting to try for #2. That was June 2006. We are still trying now!

We had spent almost 2 years trying for DD and never ever thought we would be in this situation with #2. I have since had another lap surgery to remove a cyst in JUne 2007, 6 iui's, 12 months of ovulation induction, i round of IVF and 2 FET's. All of which have resulted in BFN.

So in February after my DD starts school i am off to have my 3rd laparoscopy!!!

Goodluck with your decision!

Hi there

Wow kitty Kat, you sure have tried a lot. Good on you.

We tried for 5yrs for #1 and he has just turned 1. We started trying about 4 or 5 months ago. Given how long we waited for #1 we didn't want to waste anytime. We are seeing a naturopath and I am just thinking today I might also give accupuncutre a go - when i can find one who deals with fertility.

I feel a bit down about going back on this roller coaster. I was 10days later this month and had convinced myself it had happended this month, but started bleeding yesterday. It is such a hard road but worth it in the long run.

Our question is going to be, how long do we wait before we go down the ivf roller coaster again (3 failed ivf's then conceived naturally).

Good luck everyone.
