Osteopathic Health Care and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a normal and natural condition. However rapid changes occur within the women’s body. The ligaments soften, the curvature of the spine changes, the weight of the baby moves the centre of gravity forward, the normal mechanics within the body are disrupted. Osteopathic care focuses on ensuring the body is mobile to adopt the changes necessary to cope with the demands placed on the body. Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy can help prevent problems form arising or alleviate problems already present.

Osteopaths treat pain or dysfunction in the context of the rest of the body. This means that your Osteopath will integrate your treatment and consider the effect of treatment on the musculo-skeletal, nervous and circulatory systems. Osteopaths employ a number of treatment modalities including soft tissue massage, muscle stretching, gentle joint manipulation, positional release techniques, cranial sacral therapy and exercise prescription. Your Osteopath tailor a selection of techniques specific to your individual case. Therefore Osteopathic treatment can be beneficial for a range of individuals from newborn infants to pregnant women to the elderly.

Conditions your Osteopath may be of assistance with:

  • Pubic Pain and Pelvic Floor problems
  • Indigestion and breathlessness in pregnancy
  • Low back, middle back and neck pain
  • Tingling in the hands and feet
  • Conception assistance in unexplained infertility
