Inspiring Mama Normalises Breastfeeding By Pumping During A Half Marathon

Motherhood makes you superhuman, that’s (almost) a fact.

Within weeks of beginning a mama for the very first time, you’ll be able to do absolutely everything with just one hand.

You’ll survive days without caffeine because you won’t have time to drink hot drinks, and triple the size of your bladder (who knew you could not pee for an entire day?!).

Becoming a mama is a life-changing thing, but that doesn’t mean it has to stop you doing the things you enjoyed pre-motherhood.

Well, apart from drinking hot drinks, going to the toilet alone and having a strictly nipple-free relationship with your postman.

One inspiring mama from Utah has taken multi-tasking to the next level and single-handedly proved that it’s possible for women to keep up their hobbies once they become mamas.

Anna Young became famous recently after a photo of her expressing milk whilst running a half marathon went viral. Yes, you read that right. Using a breast pump whilst running a half marathon. Why? Because Young believes in caring for both her baby daughter and herself at the same time.

Young had always timed her training runs so they didn’t clash with her five month old daughter’s feeds, but she knew she might not have the same control over timings on the day of the half marathon in Salt Lake City. She decided to try out pumping while running just to check it was possible and it’s a good thing she did, because Young needed to express during the half marathon.

Young joined in with the #normalizebreastfeeding hashtag by sharing the following message with an online support group:

“Yesterday I ran a half marathon at five months postpartum. I had to leave at 4:30am and the race started at 6:45am. I nursed my daughter before I left my house, pumped after running the first 8 miles and nursed her after I made it past the finish line. This group and La Leche League motivated me to find a way to run my race and take care of my daughter.”

Most mamas probably aren’t thinking about running half marathons when they have young babies at home, never mind pumping breastmilk whilst running one! Young is an impressive woman, that’s for sure.

Now let’s just hope not many dads see this story because mine is under the belief that breastfeeding can only be performed whilst watching Netflix and I would hate for him to find out I could actually be running marathons if I wanted to. Once I made a cup of tea whilst breastfeeding and thought that was pretty impressive.

What’s the most impressive thing you’ve done whilst breastfeeding or pumping milk?
