Finally!!! It has been the longest journey ever!
We have had non-stop drama's the last few weeks but we made it.
Because of the dramas I missed O week so am going in blind tomorrow!
I cant believe I start tomorrow!!! I am pretty excited but also scared that I missed out of crucial info at O week. If anyone in the course can give me a heads up it would be really appreciated.
I am worried that I need a nursing uniform to do the Nursing pracs this week. Anyone????
Harmony - Hey hun! Yeh I am going ok. Crook from all the stress of moving but I am here now so things can only get better. We will have to try and catch up now....
sconeamission - in regards to the TAFE course (ATP) the advantage of doing this is that is prepares you for study, but you can also use your marks to combine with a stat test result so that it gives you a higher score to get into Uni. YOu don't have to do the whole Cert IV of the Adult Tertiary Prep , you have to do the language and learning unit and then can choose as many units as you like after that. I am doing computing and biology. Then at least I know I will satisfy the pre-reqs for the B of Mid for next year.
Good luck with it all, it seems so daunting just trying to figure out how to get INTO uni, let alone what it's like when you're there!!!!!!
sconeamission: I am doing a Tertiary preparation course though USQ. It is a fee free placing so it's all free, and also external. They have a specific stream for those who want to do nursing (you basically have three subjects, study to succeed which is two units, Maths prep A and General Science) I know that UCQ also has a similar program called STEPS which is also fee free.
I am wanting to get into the B/Nursing at ACU Brisbane next year :crossfingers:
Sara: How are you going? Just curious if you needed anything other than text books/uniforms ect to start the course? (Just my sister did nursing over 14 years ago and she had to have things like stethoscope and nursing scissors ect). Also just curious as to what the ACU nursing uniform is too? *LOL* Sorry about all the Q's:redface:
I have had a look at all the nursing courses around me and even though ACU is the furthest away (I am in Durack near Forest Lake) I think it is the best program for me(learning wise).

Well I thought I would come and post about my first week of Bachelor of Midwifery!
The week in total was quite good actually. There were a few timetable issues but apparently that is all resolved now. There are a couple of classes I am not enrolled in because of the timetable issues but I am just going to rock up to the ones that suit me the best.
I was a bit disappointed to find out that Prac's don't start until next semester in September. But I guess that gives me plenty of time to organise vaccinations, blue cards, uniforms etc.
In the nursing subject this week we learnt about hand washing. It was very interesting. You would be suprised at how much "cr@p" you have on your hands. We washed our hands as well as we thought we could then the teacher gave us this white stuff to rub all over our hand. We then had to re-wash our hands, again as best as we could. He then took us into a room where we put our hands under a black light. OMG!!! Mine weren't too bad however around the sides of my nails and up around my wrists where rements on the white stuff we'd rubbed on our hand. Some peoples were shocking!!! But the point of the task was "no matter how clean you think you've washed you hands, wash them even more!!!". Very interesting!
I have made some friends (Hi Kahlea!) and feel very comfortable on campus. The campus is quite small (compared to JCU in Townsville) which I think makes a huge difference. The teaching staff all seem to be pretty cruisy and laid back (minus a couple ;)).
The assesment side of things is quite different though. In the science subject we have to do Concept Maps, which I personally have never done. They seem pretty easy to look at but I think for someone who hasn't done them before they might be a bit daunting. As I expected, their are already assignment which are due in April. Being the start of the semester, I am trying to keep on top of things and have already made a start on one of the assignments.
MO4 - Hi there! Glad you found us! Good on you for deciding to do Nursing!
As I mentioned above, Yeh I am doing pretty good. At the moment I don't think I need all the practical stuff. I guess I'll probably start buying things towards the end of this semester. Thanks for asking though hun.
As for the uniforms, I have no idea!! I haven't see them. I did see one lady on campus yesterday in uniform but I am not sure if it was her work uniform or the prac uniform. Either way, it was quite nice. Plain white blouse with emblem on left hand side with black (maybe dark navy) skirt. I will let you know for sure when I know for sure! :D
This week I started to "advertise" my Doula services in the Brisbane area and was very suprised that I already have had 4 women contact me!! One woman wanted me to be her Midwife! I was only going to take on 2 women here and there but if I can I will try and take on 1-2 a month. I just have to remember not to get in to far over my head.
I will try and update each week or whenever I can. Hopefully my posts will be able to prepare those of you intending on starting next year!

Sara - im so glad u made it safetly - hearing u talk about ur first week gets me so excited and nervous - whats ur first assignment on?
who did u do ur Doula study thru again? how are u advertising urself? i start my Doula study once we are done moving!!! that is awesome u have so many replys already! good work! Are u able to email me a copy of your time table just so i can see what maybe im in for and to start thinking about when i will need care for Bianca?
mamasupha - okay let me get this 100% straight caus i think im going to need to do it :D - the ATP course is done thru tafe and its done externally and u dont have to do all subjects is that correct? so if i do the language and learning and biology that should help me get into uni? i was told i would need to do a science! and how much does it cost to do and how long should that take to do?
MO4 - guess what? im moving to forest lake next mth - sooooooo if we bth get into ACU next year doing the same thing..... maybe we could car pool?
Hello Mrs T, i am patiently waiting the arrival of my WIST program. I saw you post some while ago and was wondering how you are finding it. I am a 'non school leaver' hoping to get into the 2010 Bach of Midwif intake at ACU!!!! Got along way to go, PCA and a STAT and have chosen to do the WIST to soften the grey matter if nothing else. I have been waiting now for over 2 weeks to receive all my study 'stuff' but I'm egging to crack on... I look forward to hearing you opinion on it all....
Hi everyone. I have just applied with QTAC to do B Mid at ACU next year! I am feeling excited about it, even though I have a looong wait to find out if I got in or not. I have already done 6 subjects in a Bachelor of Nursing at another uni, so I am hoping I can get credit for some of them. The thought of doing midwifery next year is exciting, even though I have enjoyed nursing, midwifery was always what I wanted to do. Plus being an on-campus student will be good - I was studying externally, and it was good being able to do it all at home - not having to worry about child care and everything - but I like the thought of having face to face contact with the teachers and other students.
Those who are at ACU - how is it going?
