The 365 Photo Challenge #5

Delph, I will come back a bit later but what sort of camera have you got? I can do it on my little Olympus point and shoot I'm sure. I'll have a play and see if I can figure it out for you?

I have photoshop, but I do use piknik when I'm A/too lazy to open and process properly in PS or B/ just want something a bit fun.
I feel the same though. I want to make them the best they can be, but I also want to get better at taking good photos too.

I also struggle with the wanting to have great photos, but remembering that this is about my life....which isn't all that exciting lol.

My current camera is a Pentax point & shoot, and that can't do apeture or anything either :( But one thing I have learnt is to use the super macro. I used that to get the pic of DDs toes poking out of her hammock, and the one of her sleeping in there with the focus on the butterfly on her sleeping bag.

My fave edits in Picnik are the simple ones really - just making it black & white or sepia, boost to brighten it up, vignette to add a fade-in border (good for getting rid of things on the edge of the pic), and the 'ish' ones - they do the fade-in border and change the photo, make it b&w or brighter or something. Also, with the colour ones, you can add the effect to only some parts of the photo. So for the one of DD napping with the butterfly, I made it black & white, then used the brush to remove the effect on the butterfly only. Had to zoom right in and it took a little while but I like it :)

I've done basically all of mine on the i-phone ... I'm concentrating more on just doing them, and keeping my eyes open for things that look different / unusual / interesting, or which make me think :)

Maybe another year I'll try to make them perdy ;)

My camera is a fujifilm s1600- nothing fancy by any means but it does have settings that allow the shutter speed and apeture to be adjusted. Unfortunatly the apeture setting onlt have 2 settings so I can achieve a blurring background with a close up portrait but I couldnt say focus on a tree in the distance and have the environment around it blurry IYGWIM.

I am not in any way knowledgeable in this area LOL. I have been reading up on stuff online.

Anyway- DH says if I stick to photography for a year or so I can invest in a wizz bang one. Thanks DH :rofl:

ETA- Kim...my life isn't that exciting either..LOL..I have tried to use this profect as an excuse to get out of the house ON MY OWN for atleast 1/2 hour so I can capture a pic. DH is supportive of it and we do try to fit it in- its uploading them that are the problem lol


Kaytee- do you pay for picnik or use it free? Im just trying to work out if its worth paying for :)

I just use the free version. I don't know either if it's worth paying for, I don't think I'd use the extras enough

I'm another who loves Picnik. My favourite effects are cross process, 1960's and vignette. I'm a tad obsessed! I have photoshop elements but am still learning how to use it, so often find it easier just to use Picnik.

Ah copy Delph....though I couldn't do that either without my big lens on.

I'm doing mine via iPhone 4 for the whole thing and using Instagram for modifications - I don't think it's cheating per say, just adding cool effects ;)

Hey girls.

Just wondering, for those Picnik whizz's out there, is there a way that you can remove something out of the back ground of a pic? I have an awesome pic but there is someone standing in the background...

Any ideas?

Hmm, no idea! It would be handy though. I just get rid of stuff by trying to put the focus where I want it. There's a series of focal effects - focal blur, soften, b&w etc. Maybe that would make it less noticeable? Or cropping and using vignette? May not work depending what you shot is of and where the person is I guess.

I had a thought this morning. My project is titled "Annabelle 2012" - it's basically a photo a day of my daughter. But I go back to work in March, how am I supppsed to take a good original photo of her when I'll be gone between 8 & 5:30? Sad face.

I just had a quick search and it looks like the only way to remove and object would be to use the cloning tool and that's only available with a premium membership. I could be wrong of course, but thats the only way I could find to do it. Using selective colouring can often help take the focus away from things/people in the background, if you like that effect?

Aww Kaytee, that will make it a bit harder but I'm sure you'll still manage to get great shots of your dd. You'll just have to make it your mission to get really good at low light photography for the Winter months :)

Uggh, you'll get to recognise the same few names that always start those kind of threads. They always say they're joking, but it makes the place seem so cliquey and uninviting. Don't let it make you sad, your photos are awesome :D

The great hate debate? Sounds wonderful! I haven't bothered with the forum or discussions, I'm really just there for myself - try and improve my own skills, and get ideas from all of your great piccies :) I haven't really looked at anyone's other than people I follow, so I'm really not fussed by what anyone else on there is saying. But the title of that thread has got me interested lol.

And Kim, I agree with munchkin mumma, your photos are great!!

Also MM, I forgot about winter getting dark so early. As if it's not bad enough that I have to leave DD at all, now I've gotta throw in this project. I'll probably spend the work day wondering what I can do for the day's photo lol.

ETA: Just saw the thread, what is up with them?? They're gonna hate all my photos I reckon, mwahahaa :)

MM yep I noticed the tongue in cheek and joking comments and the fact that they weren't bullying.....they were just plain nasty. I don't see anywhere in the rules that says everyone's photos need to suit their tastes and quality.

I don't bother reading their forums or discussions either. I am a couple days behind in photos at the moment. Not in the right head space.

:hug: Kim. You're not the only emotional one. I was driving into town to go shopping, and it's a bit of a drive so I was thinking about some of the comments on there. I've already had a cry this morning about a bad mummy moment, so it didn't take much for this to make me emotional! I was just thinking, who are they to say what makes a good photo? Does it matter if someone has cropped their image and added a frame? I suddenly hated the thought that some of these people might be looking at my shots and going "They're all baby shots, I hate that. This one's got a frame, really hate that. Oh look, this one's had the colour boosted in Picnik, hate that. This person obviously sucks!"

But then I thought stuff 'em. I'm not doing this for other pretentious snobs to get some kind of artsy fartsy fulfilment from. I'm doing it to document DD's first year, and this challenges me to think of different shots to take of her, rather than the same thing all the time. So I kind of realised, it doesn't matter what they think at all. I'm not trying to be an artist with this, and if I was I'd never please everyone anyway. As long as I'm enjoying what I'm doing, that's all that matter :)
