Yeah for the end of Brace time for your DS Naomi. Its fantastic when they find their feet again, hehe, and also amazing the speed at which they catch up to where they should be again. There will be no stopping him now!
Hey has anyone noticed a link to walking on their tiptoes? Our DD walks and runs constantly on her toes.
Now that exams are all over and its holiday time i can come and chat more frequently, thank you all for your warm welcomes and support. Its great to hear such positive stories.
well we had our appointment with the orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday and after 2hours of tests and xrays it was what we expected - DD needs surgery to fix her hip. The dr thinks it will be an open hip reduction as well as cutting into her hip to lower the socket, but will make the decision after injecting dye into the area on the day of the operation.
She will be in hospital for 3 days and in a cast for 6 weeks. We find out the date of surgery within the next week and it should all happen within the next 3 months, as the dr prefers to do this kind of surgery in winter so they are not uncomfortable during the hotter months in a cast.
This doesn't seem real... my poor little girl!

Hope all goes well for you, Pink Fairy. We have a similar story a little further down the time line.
DD went in for her hip operation a week and a half ago. They did a Salter Oesteotomy, (cutting hip bone horozontally in half, rotating the socket section down and placing a piece of bone in the gap, all held together with pins.) Op went fine, or so we thought! She had an xray on day 4 and found the piece of bone had slipped out and hip had returned to its previous position. So day 5 the operation had to be redone, what an ordeal!! extra pins were put in and she is now in a spica, Phew!
We are now home, and she is doing really well! It is amazing how quickly they recover from such a big procedure (x2). She is back to her cheeky self, and taking everything in her stride (or Beanbag!).
What a little trooper!!!
Kids are so resilliant, and can certainly teach us a thing or two about coping with the things life throws at us.:D
Oh wow, Madcat! What an ordeal! Sounds like you're keeping really positive though, good on you and wishing your DD a speedy recovery.

It's been so long since I've visted you all and at a quick skim, I think I am across what stage most of you are at.
Madcat - you and your bub sound like absolute troopers!
Corelly - how fantastic the brace is gone, am jealous but happy for you!
Pink Fairy - I hope things are going OK with your little one, sounds like a lot going on with you guys!
Well, our little tots is now 13 months old and has had the brace on for 4 months now. At her 4 month check with the surgeon, he looked at the x-ray and there has been NO improvement at all so far. So the original 'minimum 6 months in brace' is out the window... looks like being more like a whole year. Arrgghh!
Still, I shouldn't complain as we certainly have not been through the wringer some of you with surgery etc. Our problem is that we are waiting for her hip socket to calcify into bone. The little procedure she had in theatre at the begining showed that cartilage is there and her femur sititng correctly in the hip socket, but it just hasn't formed into bone yet. Is this a similar situation with anyone else?
Anyway, she started walking on her own at 11 months old. We couldn't believe it! Not to be left behind by her big sister, she just took off! She looks so funny waddling around - everyone watches her in a bit of dis-belief. And now, 2 months down the track moves to fast and has started the 'climbing phase'. God help me! She even has her own pair of shoes now, of which is so proud. So much so, that I took them off before her nap the day she got them and she insisted on taking them to bed with her to cuddle. Strange girl!
Well, that's our update. I hope everyone is coping reasonably well and that we can all see some light at the end of the tunnel!

Smarti - What a little legend! Walking at 11 months in a brace! Now that's determination :) . Wish your doctor had some good news for you, but I hope that the time flies and you see some improvement soon.

Well we had our checkup last Thursday (DS has been out of his brace for a month), and the xrays showed a massive improvement (**breaths BIG sigh of relief**). We don't have to go back to the ortho surgeon for 12 months !!!!!! YAY ! Even the surgeon seemed suprised how quickly DS's acetabular angles have improved. We are stoked to say the least! I know this sounds really odd but I am finding myself a bit teary every time I think back to DS in his brace now, I have this sadness that wont budge that 6 of his first 12 months of life were spend in the brace, anyone else have feelings like that after its all over? I know we have been incredibly lucky as our treatment was short compared to some, but I guess I'll always feel a little 'robbed' of his babyhood IYKWIM?

Update on Lahni: She had her x-ray a month or so ago and her right hip is perfect still (yay) and her left hip still isn't 100%, apparently she has no cartledge in her left hip or something??
But the doctor didn't seem too stressed about it and said 30% of babies her age don't have it yet or something, we have another x-ray late July and see the doctor the following afternoon, so fingers crossed everything is ok.
I cant help but to get nervous... hahaha, at least I got another month to wait hahaha.

We are still yet to hear from the hospital about a date, but i guess thats the beauty of going through the public system. Fingers crossed its not too long.
Ive started talking to DD about it, we watched a video on the childrens hospital website (highly recommend it for anyone who needs to take kids to hospital in the future!) and she knows she is going for an operation, she thinks its for the sore on her knee lol ive taken her shopping and we got some nighties and leg warmers... so now its just a waiting game.
Madcat - Glad your DD is doing well, what a stressful time for all of you! How is she coping with her cast and not being able to walk yet?

Pink Fairy, i hope your operation date is soon.
Our DD is coping really well with being in a cast. She was in a full spica when she was one, and although she doesn't have a memory of this, i wonder whether she this has subconsciously helped?
We are only a week in and another six to go... The first day she spent most of the day screaming "GET THIS PLASTER OFF ME NOW!!!!" (Exorsist Style!) but since then she has not mentioned it, and has seemed content to be wheelchair or beanbag bound.
We have waited for our DD's op for about 10 months, and told her all about it from the outset. She was fully prepared and could have told the surgeons exactly what to do. It was only in the week leading up to the op we read we should have only told her about it a week before, oops. But she was SO brave and didnt hear a squeek of fear from her before hand. After the op, rest assured every day gets much easier, and once you all get used to it, the spica part is easy. Its all a small price to pay for their future freedom and comfort, and the kids adapt to their new situation quickly.
Reccommend: Lots of pillows, Chest freezer full of easy cook meals, Lots of walks, beanbags (if ok with surgeons advice), lots of games and easy reach play things, movies and thank god for ABC kids!!!

Naomi - Bailey is a true champion. He is just so determined and his brace days are behind him. I owe him a pair of cargo pants - so if you do end up in Melbourne, I see a shopping day!
Jesska - Waiting is the hardest thing isn't it? And I know what you mean about looking back at photos too. The other day we were going through photos of DD and a few with the plaster and braces came on and I was in tears. It still hurts every time I look at them. I can see her now, so free and it's easy to forget what it was like, but when you see it again, it hits hard. I can't wait for the day where we've been brace-free longer than in the brace, but we're a long way away from that. I'm sure Lahni will be fine :)
Pink Fairy - sounds like you're preparing for the hospital really well. I hope the time comes around soon for you.
Madcat - I wish I had your positivity when we were in our spica stage. You sound like you and DD are going along fantastically well. Good on you!

Haven't been in for a long time but just having a read through, Naomi - I know what you mean about feeling you have missed out on something, but having had both my DD treated for hip dysplasia I've just had to come to terms with this was meant to be my journey. We are not having any more children so I will never get to enjoy a baby brace free but that is just our journey. I joke to people I have breach, small babies that have dodgy hips (both girls were breach, therefore CS births and both were small 2.6kg and 2.4kg and both had HD). You can always hope any future children won't have the same issue but don't count on it otherwise you will be more disappointed.

I'm new to this! Just wanted to vent my sadness at the news I just received yesterday that my 7 week old DD needs to be put in a brace this week. I spent the day crying yesterday and of course my little girl was just smiling at me all day! It's only her left hip which they say is moderate at 38% and likely to hve the harness on for 3
months. I know it's not long in the scheme of things but
it's just upsetting because it's my first and I just thought
she was perfect! I know she still is but it just upsets me to
think she's going to be unable to kick her little legs. She's so active and has been rolling over from 1.5
weeks and I'm worried that it will delay her development. I know it's only for 3 months though and many of you have had it worse I'm just a little upset and it may take a bit to get my head around it. Thanks for listening!!
Oh KristenZ, my heart warms for you. My DD was also that little when her first brace went on and it was tough. But she was so resilient and once you're past the first couple of days, it does get easier. I had my down days as you've probably read, but DD adjusted and we did get through. There are lots of people here to support you. As far as delaying development goes, yes, it will for a minute, but it doesn't take them long to catch up. And my DD is showing that due to the time she spent restricted, her other developments have come flying forward - she talks like you wouldn't believe. She can count and knows many of the ABC and she's only 15 months old. So try not to worry too much, lots of good will come out of this too. Your DD is perfect, no matter what, brace or no brace. We made sure we smiled and laughed a lot with DD, tried to hide the tears from her, and she was a pretty happy baby throughout. Hope this helps, even a tiny bit. Make the most of all of your cuddle time for the week.

KirstenZ - DD was in her first brace for four weeks, but it wasn't working, so she went in for surgery, was in plaster for five weeks and then into her last brace for around six months. Soooo, it started in July last year and ended in February this year. Please don't be disheartened, DD's left hip was pretty much non-existent and her right was poor too. Her first brace was a Dennis Browne and her last one a Rhino Cruiser - I think Mummy Naomi's DS had the pavlik. We used socks with the toes cut off to put under the Dennis Browne - I think the braces are fairly similar. The socks served as a soft comfortable barrier between the brace and DD's legs and then her pants went over the top. We also used a bean bag for her to sit in and she was very comfortable sitting in that.

KristinZ - sorry to hear this is the start of the DDH journey for you, its very scary and emotional at first, but I promise it does get easier. Give your baby lots of hugs this weekend before the brace is fitted, as they are a little harder to snuggle in so close with the brace (not that it will stop you giving cuddles :) ). Chat to all of us here, we've all been through it and know EXACTLY how you are feeling right now. As our orthopedic surgeon told me at the beginning - Your baby is ALREADY perfect, we are just making him even more so :)
Good luck next week, these little babies deal with it all much easier that their emotional Mummy's do.

I'm getting confused Nay :P DD's didn't have the straps over the shoulders so I thought that's what the difference was. :doh: Love what your surgeon said to you though!

Corelly, I reckon they only add the straps to the Dennis Browne if the baby's are a bit older (Bailey was 7 months the day he was fitted), I think it's because if they are more mobile the brace bar can slip under the bum and out of position so the straps keep it in the right spot as they crawl around etc :):

Glad you found your way to the Forum. My DD went into a harness about the same time as yours for a period of three months. She is out of the harness now and it all looks pretty good.
I've posted before on some of the lessons we learned. But, in short, I found that we had to change from Huggies to Aldi nappies. The tabs on the Aldi nappies are much longer and softer which is helpful when they are in the brace. We got a bunch of men's hankerchiefs for bathtime. They get soft and you can wring out the excess water so you don't get the brace wet. DD also spent quite a bit of time in her vibrating rocker chair. It was quite comfortable for her. If the brace rubs on the skin you can ask the physio to put some gauze on the straps which will protect your DD's skin. When DD went up a brace size the physio offered us a second hand brace and we found this to be a good option. It looked yuck - but yours will too even if you work really hard to keep it clean - but it was much softer than a new brace on the skin.

Take heart, it is a definitely a shock, but we get better at dealing with it day by day. Hospitals are great places for showing us how lucky we are, even with our hip journeys.
You are so lucky it was all picked up quickly. They really do catch up at warp speed afterwards, and are well ahead in the ways they are unrestricted.
Take care of yourselves, do things that make you smile, and it is ok to cry!

Hi everyone, I hope it's okay if I join in? My 6 week old DD was fitted into her pavlik harness on Monday and we all seem to be adjusting okay. She's been feeding and sleeping well but has wanted a lot more chest cuddles and I don't blame her. I wonder whether she feels any crampiness or stiffness?
They noticed she had a clicky hip at birth and at her 6 week ultrasound it showed that although there was no dislocation and they could fan out both her legs, her hip sockets are both quite shallow. I think I spent the few days between the u/s and the fitting in constant tears, my poor DH really copped it at times! :redface:
Welcome Liddy, glad you dropped by, sorry to hear things have been tough, they are at the start, but I promise it does get easier, its such an emotional time when our perfect little babies have to go into harnesses and braces, but it sounds like you are doing wonderfully well under sucky circumstances, I'm sure your DH understands what you're going through, us Mums let it all out a lot more than the Dads do.
I'm certain your DD doesn't feel any crampiness or stiffness, our little ones are much more resilient than us, and at 6 weeks fortunately she is young enough that this big new world brings something new every day, even if it is a harness, but enjoy those precious chest cuddles (I miss those newborn snuggles, these days I only get them when DS is sleepy hehehehehe)

Thanks so much Naomi :) I think I spoke too soon, Olivia barely slept at all last night no matter how much she was cuddled or fed. I was so seriously sleep deprived that I told my DH that I was tempted to rip the harness off!
Hi just thought i would up date you all - we got a date for dd's surgery and its in September, 3 weeks after her 3rd birthday. Im trying to stay positive as I know its for the best, but I'm sure once it gets closer I'll be a nervous wreck!!! Its going to be mid semester at uni so I've been busy arranging my mum and dd's dad (we aren't together anymore) to have holidays around my timetable, lucky uni is only 2 mornings a week.
Madcat - Thanks for all the tips. Your dd would be close to getting her cast off? Hope all is going well and she has made a good recovery!

Pink_fairy - I was a rollercoaster of emotions leading up to DD's surgery, know what you're going through. I got up to the night before and totally cracked, it was awful. Keep coming in and chatting to us, it helped get me through.
It has been one year since DD's surgery. I've been thinking about it a bit this week, remembering what it was like then and looking at where she is now. Time really does fly. I also remember being as sick as a dog when she had her surgery....and whaddya know, I'm sick again now too!!!

Well I gave DD's day care the dates of her surgery and weeks she will be having off - definitely is starting to feel 'real' now! They said they are quiet happy to have her in a cast but I said she will be home for at least the first 2 weeks then we will see what happens. Im not to keen on the idea but it may be good for her, to keep in routine.
Thanks Pink_Fairy. It does feel like a big achievement :) It's good that your day care has said that DD can go even in the cast. I can understand why you aren't keen on the idea, I'd be the same. But at the same time it may be a very welcome distraction for her too, especially if she is used to going. I don't know, maybe there is someone here who has been in the exact situation that will post and let you know how their LO got on. Good luck!

I feel like a bad Mum because although I've been checking DD's legfolds I noticed that she has developed a red, raw area under one of her knees from the edge of the leg part :( I had some soft micropolar fleece material that I've cut into strips and placed underneath. I hope that's an okay thing to do..

My 6 month old daughter Emma is having an open reduction on the 28th July, I am a little nervous about the op and the 6-12 weeks in a spica cast following it.
I have had a few tears tonight just thinking about the op on Wednesday and I'm sure there will be more to come! It is reassuring to hear that I'm not alone and that many children have had this procedure and are now walking/running normally.
Any suggestions on what I should get up to whilst she is having her hour and a half long operation?! I think I will be a mess, I feel for my hubby already!
For those who are going through the same thing, I hope we'll get through this together. For those who have made it out the other side, I hope you can answer our many questions!!
Furgurnie - welcome to the group. For what to do while Emma is in surgery - are you still breastfeeding? I spent a lot of the time expressing milk because the surgeon told me that it would be easier to give her a bottle afterwards if the spica was still a bit wet. So I did that and that seemed to calm me a little, gave me a different focus for a little while. DH got busy getting new bottles of water and snacks from the hospital cafe. The remainder of the time was spent leaping out of our skin each time the doors to theatre opened. The anethesist was first to come out, and he was smiling, the greatest gift he could've given us at that point. If you aren't b/f, find a focus. Go to the chemist in the hospital and stock up on long stemmed cotton buds and the tape they use to seal the edges of the spica. Finding things that will help care for Emma immediate will make you feel like you are helping even at that moment. Feeling for you hon.
Liddy - You poor thing. It's a horrible time and no matter what you do its hard. I'm sure the micropolar fleece will be nice and soft for your DD. We used adult socks with the toes cut off and folded them over. Be kind to yourself. :hug:

Furgurnie, while in surgurgy I went for straight for a coffee! Its always a 'nervious wreck' time, do something for yourself, then you have more to give back when they get out. Take care, breath deep!
Pink Fairy - DD has get less than two weeks left for her cast to come off, SOOO excited! She has done really well putting up with the whole ordeal. She has gone back to kinda, the first week she wouldn't let me leave, the second week the teachers were happy to give it all a go on their own, and she was fine. Its great for them to get their self esteem back among their peers, and feel a bit independent again! Not to mention great excuse to leave the house for a change, cabin fever be gone!
Good luck, keep busy til the op date, then hopefully it will just sneak up on you, the waiting is the worst bit!
PS - DD is pretty worried they will chop her legs off accidently when they remove the cast. She says she is going to ask to be asleep for this. Haha

Corelly, how is your little girl now? Are her hips "normal" and not requiring further treatment? After the spica cast what brace did she go into? How was the state of her legs once out of the cast?
Madcat, how long after your daughter's first op did you find out that she needed another? Was she in a lot of pain post op? How long did she stay in hospital for?
PinkFairy, I feel for you, the waiting is terrible but time really flys and before you know it September will be here. I had to wait nearly 6 weeks from the time we had our appt with pediatric ortho surgeon til date of op (this wednesday), so know what you are going though. I will let you know how we go.

I have been following your stories since our daughter was diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia and a fully dislocated right hip about two weeks ago at 11 months. We had our orthopedic surgeon appointment this morning and it wasn't great news unfortunately. She is being scheduled for an open reduction and possibly an osteotomy if the surgeon thinks it is required on the day. We are looking at 12 weeks casting after that which I know is pretty standard and I would guess a brace after that, although I forgot to ask about that.
I had expected at least a closed reduction but the treatment is certainly more aggressive than I was expecting. No matter how prepared you think you are, it still comes as a shock to know for sure that your precious little one will be scheduled for surgery.
I am amazed by the courage and positivity of the wonderful parents in this forum. I can only hope that I am able to handle this difficult time as well as you all have.:pray:
Hi Karma1410, sorry to hear your news, it certainly does come as a shock. You have come to the right place though! I only joined this forum the other day and already I feel a little better knowing that there is support right here.
Your story sounds similar to ours. We knew our daughter had “abnormal” hips and may need a brace, but when we went to orthopaedic surgeon we found out that her right hip was actually dislocated and required surgery. The surgeon plans to try a closed reduction but it’s more likely an open reduction that is needed. :cry:

Madcat: your DD sounds like such a brave and positive little girl: I'm sure you are so proud of her! Good to hear she is back at school, I'm hoping DD will be back at day care around week 3/4 after the op.
furgurnie: all the best for Wednesday, I will be thinking of you and your DD. anyway i better stop talking now...
Furgurnie - DD is almost 16 months now and she has recovered really really well. She hasn't taken her first independent steps yet, but is walking around hanging onto us and furniture, and its now just a build up of confidence. She learned to crawl "properly" once out of the brace, but could commando crawl in it and she also learned to roll over while in the brace. She will require visits to our surgeon until she is 14, the first one being in May next year, and then every couple of years until 14, provided no problems arise. After the spica, she went into a Rhino Cruiser, which is plastic and foam. It's a little bit flexible, and kids who can walk before going into one, can usually walk while in it. It goes over the clothes too, which makes life a lot easier. Her legs were okay after the cast was removed, we managed to avoid bed sores! Her skin was very dry, but only needed a couple of days of moisturising before they were soft and chubby again. At our surgeon's visit, where he told us that the brace could come off (so many tears on that day!), he also told us that DD was in the worst 10% of cases, which is why her treatment went on for so long. I hope all of this helps, keep firing questions at us.:

I also wanted to say to anyone starting on this journey - trust your surgeon. If you like him/her, of course. My MCHN told me that if DD wasn't walking by 15 months, it was an issue and she needed to know about it. She completely ignored the fact that from 7 weeks to 11 months, DD's legs were restricted. I spoke to our surgeon about it and he said that there are some kids who, even with normally developing hips and bones, don't walk until they're 22 odd months and not to worry about it. So I'm taking his advice and I thought that MCHN was a little unfair to put the worry there considering the circumstances. You will get loads of advice from different medical professionals, learn who you can trust and the others, well, just smile!
And a question from me too............to the parents who have had a child with hip dysplasia, have you had another baby? Did it also happen to the next bubba? If anyone is reading this and has a story, please share. TIA.

My brief story is, I am a mummy to 2 girls. My first born is turning 4 and is totally fine, my second born has just turned 1. Our journey began in January this year when I noticed that my then 6 month old had one leg longer than the other. I took her straight up to our GP who agreed it wasn't right and organised an ultrasound. We saw our Paed Ortho and he booked her in for surgery the next day. Mind you, our Dr is very conservative. We had a closed reduction and an adductor tenotomy. We were very lucky to be in the Spica for only 6.5 weeks. We have been in the brace 23 hours a day since coming out of the Spica mid March. At our last appoint in May, her hip was stable which was great news, but there wasn't enough growth, so have remained in the brace 23 hours a day still. Our next appoint is 17th August which I am already so nervous about.
