We don't use one either. I have considered starting with something like Inner Health but haven't actually done anything about it yet.

I had low Vit D when pregnant and was advised to give bub Pentavite for 12 months. She hates it! She just spits it out. So your little one might make the decision for you.
We've been doing BLS for a couple of weeks now and I am so totally surprised at how fast DD has gotten good at it. She picks everything up and gets it in her mouth, she just has the problem that when she sees another bit of food she immediately drops the thing she has in her hand/mouth and reaches for the new thing. Not much is getting eaten so far but enough to make her nappies scary to change! At the moment, we are still giving her foods on their own - bits of steak, spinach leaves, vegies on their own. Tonight DH and I had lasagne and I was wondering if it would have been okay to give her too? DH made it himself with no added salt etc. Is this fine to start or too early?
starangelk, I think it's fine if you feel comfortable with it - give it a go! Get a messy mat ready though :D
Thanks Swoop :) We already have a "drop mat" - luckily my Grandma provided some old fabric she had lying around and it saves our floor!!
Staranglk - I gave DD risotto the other day....made myself, which even had wine and cheese in it....she loved it! I though afterwards whether I should have given it to her, but then thought...hey...nothing happened (thank goodness) so I guess all's well. There's always going to be a first for everything I think.
Persephone - we don't use supplements here, our gp has always told us they will just fill their nappy with your money. Majority of supplements aren't absorbed and will just get flushed, unless there is a proven deficiency. Even with DD2 major eating problems, gp has never said to give supplements. Their bodies are super efficient at taking nutrients out of food, so even a limited small diet will help them grow. Its personal choice though, even if to just make you feel better.
Starengelk - let her go at whatever, as the theory is, if they can pick it up themselves and get it in their mouth, they can chew it. Lasagne is one of DD2 favourite dinners.
Last night she scoffed tuna bake, I couldn't believe how fast to little hands could shovel it in her mouth, she was finished the bowl in under 5 minutes, then played with the rest I gave her. Had to remove tuna bake from her hair and in her ear though, grosssss. Today she ate a ham, lettuce and cheese wrap for lunch and her very first cupcake (aunties will do things like that behind your back)
We had fingerpainting with vita-brits mixed with ebm last night. Then straight into the bath with Dad! Big mess but she had fun. My little one has been sick and was on antibiotics they we had to syringe into her mouth so she is kinda on strike with anything going into her mouth at the moment- except nipple. Also trying to get her to take ebm which has not been very successful so far.
Can I ask everyone about a change in poos? I think that this is the right place to ask - DD was a "once every 6 days" pooer and now she is pooing every single day. I wasn't all that sure she was getting much in the way of solids - but could she be getting more than I think she is due to the change in nappy?
She's also cut her 2 bottom teeth and I was reading that this can have an effect on their pooing habits.
I'm just wondering.
Anyway, today we have had a croissant for breakie, some soup and bread for lunch (chunky soup that she got her fingers right into) and we are having chicken salad wraps for dinner. YUM!
S xxx
Kate, we never did manage with the EBM here, although she'll happily drink cows milk from a sippy cup when I'm not there or we're out somewhere that I can't b/f her easily. I hope you have success, I know it's important for your day working.
Sue, for us it was more the consistency than the volume that changed with solids intake. I would suspect it could be linked to the teeth, teething has an effect on poos every time around here.
Mumma Sue - DD's poo's have increased in frequency here too! And they seem to have quadrupled in size also. I had to beg DH to change her the other night LOL
LOL, ok good to know! So it's probably a combination of the teething and the solids.
Seph, I don't give DD a supplement. Hadn't even occurred to me to do so - bad me!
DD still isn't all that fussed about food. I'm really starting to worry that she isn't getting enough. It's like when she bites things, it just comes back out again - kind of like she doesn't like having chunks of stuff in her mouth. We are offering her stuff all the time at the moment - meals and snacks, so she is getting plenty of practice.
AAHH, I'm sounding like a broken record. Sorry guys.
Mummasue- I can sympathise with the worry about whether they are eating enough. All the problems we have had with DD1 and her diet, I found it a bit hard with DD2 and the BLS to keep myself thinking she is eating enough and are we doing the right thing. She's almost 10 months and I've never seen a child eat with the abilities that she does. It took till about 9 months till she was really consuming a decent amount of food, before that she mainly played and experimented with it. Now I can see the time line forming that they say a baby should develop at, 6-9 month food is for experimenting and no nutrition required from it, 9-12 months transition starts from experimenting to actually requiring the nutrition and dropping milk as the main source. She has started to eat much more, I go to clean up sometimes and was used to picking it up off the floor and scrapping it off the inside of the highchair and now I get shocked cause I don't find scraps which means she has eaten the entire lot. Her coordination and motor skills are amazing, she uses her tiny little fingers with agile speed, picking out tiny bits of food to play with and eat. She's only 7 months, plenty of time to get there.
Thanks Studymum, it's good to have the support here. I know what you mean about her coordination though - she's amazing already. It's just actually consuming the food that she needs to get the hang of!!
Thanks hun xxx
DH and I can't stop laughing. This is our son's first attempt at feeding himself: (hope the link works) Facebook
PS We hadn't intended on spaghetti as the first food, and he had trouble picking it up, but we'll start with finger foods over the next few weeks. Tonight was just a trial run.
Gorgeous pic! Great effort little one!
Ah, looks like he was enjoying himself... good lad! Enjoy the next few weeks :)
Hehehe, Seph that is priceless.
That is so adorable Seph!!
I feel like a horrible mumma. Friday night we were at my mums as usual, we have dinner there every week, I gave DD2 the tuna bake that my mum made, without even thinking that she gets it out of the jar and doesn't make it from scratch with lactose free cream like we do. Then I couldn't understand why she had horrible runs that burnt her bum Saturday and gave her wind. I was thinking I had eaten to much dairy myself and passed to much onto her, until I was sitting there Tuesday and it clicked. She's better now but I feel stupid:doh: Looks like she is still lactose intolerant
I spent forever yesterday at the shops searching for sachets of lactose free formula, which are meant to exist but I can't find anywhere, I visited our baby nurse and she rescued me with a free pack. Luv her. I didn't want to buy a whole tin just to use maybe 4 bottle out of it before it goes off. I've since found the sachets online but it works out to $14 a packet, which is nasty. Off tomorrow to try to convince our local chemist to stock them.
DD is 1 in a couple of weeks and she still barely swallows much. Some days are great and she really seems hungry and eats a lot. Other days... she just takes a bite out of each thing.
We've only ever done BLS, which we started at about 7months.
We just offer what we eat, plus plenty of snacks during the day.
She's not fussy I don't think, justnot that hungry I guess?
Things are still the same for us..... although, I got all excited yesterday after we'd had morning tea of rockmelon and watermelon - it looked like she'd actually eaten it!! But upon further inspection, there was actually a stash of food down the front of her singlet  Too cute!
*sigh*
Thats cheeky mummasue, the old stash-a-roo :hide: wait till you start finding it metres from the highchair or on the wall behind them
Hi turtleshell :hello: babies are funny like that, but I guess they know whats best for themselves. Both mine the same, some days are hoovers, others a pickers. She obviously doesn't require it otherwise she would eat more of what you offer.
AFM I gave DD2 a whole nectarine today, it was hilarious watching her pulls faces every time she tried to bite the furry skin, before I knew it i was rescuing the seed because she had mushed it that much.
Hi guys, it's great to be able to share our BLS journeys. I have to admit, already I am worried about the "amount" of food DD is getting. I am reassuring myself with the food is fun until they're 1 thing and I have also seen improvements along the way but I guess I want to know for people who have been down the whole process of BLS and come out the other end - when did their kids start eating? Because at this very early stage, puree kids are eating sooo much more and putting on sooo much more weight as well. I know I sound a bit negative but I am seriously LOVING the whole BLS thing and so is DD. But has anyone found that their babies want to copy you exactly? DD is really interested in my fork so I picked up some food and showed it to her and she grabbed the fork and put it in her mouth!! So I think I need to get a baby fork for her to play with. She LOVES the spoon.
Ah guys i need to post here more! Find the time
DD2 is 10 months and she pretty much just consumed a whole bowl (heinz unbelievable bowl) of spaghetti and meatballs. Today she has also eaten half a large banana, about half a bowl of porridge with apple puree, slice bread with tuna, lettuce and cucumber, although she picks out the lettuce and tosses it from the highchair, and a vegemite milk arrowroot. Its only been in the last few weeks that she has actually started eating all that is put in front of her and not just playing with it. She was born a big girl but her weight has dropped from 97th percentile to 50th, which I don't personally think has any thing to do with how much she eats or drinks (still a booby monster with min 6 feeds a day), she has just gotten more active and I don't think genetically was prone to be big forever.
DD was not done by BLS, by this age she consumed 2 extra large jars equivalent a day plus a couple of snacks and by 1 it was 3+ jars. She was only ever 50th percentile and still is. She at a huuuggee amount for her age, but it didn't effect her weight. I think they are all just different, and will eat different amounts and it doesn't necessarily mean their weight will be different either, otherwise DD2 would have been the size of a house, I think its just genetically how they will grow as long as they are happy with the amount they are consuming and not getting aggravated by not enough.
One time I got into a debate over the quantity DD2 was eating and to prove fact to my mother, got an old baby food jar and shoved the vegetables DD was going to have for dinner into it, it well and truly filled it and she pretty much ate the whole lot. Sometimes I think because non-jarred food is harder to quantify then it appears to be less.
And DD2 loves playing with spoons and forks, I just give her one at every meal and let her experiment with it, usually it just stabs at things and eventually gets thrown but already she gets the concept. DD1 was well to 18months before she mastered a spoon.
Studymum, you're a great person to have in this thread because you've seen and are seeing both sides of the way to introduce solids. You're such a reassurance for me.
So, thank you xxxxx
mm studymum you definitely are beneficial to all of us in here I think!!
I've noticed DD eats more when we are out of the house, perhaps because I am less inclined to wack the boob out so soon!
I tend to just give her one item at a time, wait till she's done with it before offering something else. It's easier for me coz less wastage if she isn't hungry.
Should I be serving it all up in front of her in one go?
studymum - thank you so much for sharing. That is great feedback!
thanks MummaSue!
Anyone given their bub a lemon to suck on? DD loves it! Though I've only done it once.. bit worried about the acidity affecting her new teeth!
Hey guys,
Can I ask when you first gave your little one egg? The BLW book says that hard scrambled egg is fine from 6 months but I'm just not sure.
And also, we gave DD a peanut butter sandwich the other day (well, DH did) and I was a bit freaked - again for the allergy thing. She didn't have a reaction though, and like DH LOVED the peanut butter sanger!
What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Sue x
I think it's only an issue if you know of a family history with allergies to those particular things. No allergies in our family to egg and nuts and DD had no reactions, but I'm allergic/intolerant of plenty of topical things, so I took it slowly on a lot of introduced foods. Don't know why I bothered though, I ate peanut butter sandwiches to the exclusion of just about everything else during my pg and a bit afterwards and if she'd have been allergic we'd have noticed much earlier while she was being bf.
Next time I'll watch when I introduce, but I won't withhold anything except honey.
Thanks Jennifer!! xxxx
Oh thanks everyone, its good that our journey both times is helping, you know what they say, you learn from your mistakes :D
We do pretty much the same with allergy prone foods, just introduce them a bit later and keep an eye on them to notice any changes. Its usually associated with family history but there can be some randoms like my cousins son, who is allergic to egg and they don't know anyone in the family that is, poor buggers face swells up.
With egg its the same as when you are pregnant, you just need to make sure it is cooked all the way through. Scrambled egg is one of DD2's favourites now and I even managed a break through with DD1 the other night, she shared in some of my lunch and didn't even care that there was ham and chives in it, scoffed the lot  DD2 has had small amount of penut butter, just on the crust of my toast and no reaction, but she won't eat it properly, seems to prefer vegemite. I do make sure I remove large pieces of nuts from things, like out of the curried sausages last night, this is because they can't chew them properly and it can be a chocking hazard. Honey I definitely wont give till after 1.
Turtle - we used to do that with DD1 just for amusement, she would pull funky faces but go back for more. I think as long as its not a regular thing it should be okay. Good for learning sour tastes too.
I was a little bit cautious of giving DD2 our dinner last night as it was curried sausages and vegies, as the sauce was a little bit spicy. So what I did was only coat the sausage and vegies in a teeny amount of sauce. She absolutely hoovered it, I think it did get a bit spicy at one stage cause she kept rubbing her face, but the whole time attempting to pick up more and shovel it. She kept going for her water bottle to. Today there was no change in her stool or behaviour so I am guessing the spicy food didn't harm her.
When we were introducing foods where there's a higher risk of allergy (egg, peanuts etc) I just made sure that i didn't offer any other new foods around that time so that I could see if there was a reaction.
Everything allergy-wise was fine until recently, when DD had satay which would have been her 4 or 5th time having peanuts - she had what I'm assuming is a reaction to the peanuts. We're having her tested to make sure, but not until February. Thought I'd just mention it because I wasn't aware that there could be no reaction the first few times and then a reaction - luckily a few of the girls on BB put me straight! I've since found out that DH's cousin's son has a peanut allergy, so maybe I should've been more cautious, but I didn't know that at the time (and even if i did I think I likely would've assumed it was indirect enough to give it a go anyway).
Scrambled egg is an absolute favourite in our house too so I'm glad that seems to be ok.
I'm going to make her some scrambled egg for breakie tomorrow then.
We're still not interested in food that much. This morning I made her a banana sandwich and it got squished up and thrown over the high chair. It seems to be more of a game at the moment. Although, she vacuums up sticks of cucumber and yells at me when I'm chopping it up! So funny!
There I go again, broken record. :(
We find DD not too fussed on scrambled or fried egg, she'll try it, but doesn't eat too much of it. Give her a sliced up boiled egg and she loves it. The only time I can be guarenteed she'll eat all a sandwich or piece of toast is if it has peanut butter on it, probably because she was so used to it in utero! We also find she loves any meat out of the slow cooker, especially chicken. I think it's easy for her to chew up, and she sits there going 'Mmmm Mmmm Mmmmm' as she eats it all.
MummaSue we can go a week with just playing with her food, and then she'll devour everything in sight for 2 days straight. I find it hard to relax about it too. Lately it's more fun to watch it fall as she lets it go over the side, or to splat it flat (we say she loves to kill all her food) with her hand over and over again on the high chair tray.
Today in a cafe, an elderly woman came up and demanded to know how old DD was. I said 8 months, and she told me she was far too young to be eating a biscuit (milk arrowroot) and she would choke and die. She almost went to take the biscuit off her when I rather sternly said 'she is fine, you sit back and watch her eat it'. Thankfully DD didn't gag while she finished it, and she apologised but still mumbled that she was too young. It was quite heated for a minute there!
Goodness HB, why do people feel the need to interfere????? AARRGGHH! Good on you for telling her off! x
I'm struggling abit at the moment. with food in general (and sleep but that's another story), it's not specifically a BLS thing. Bub gags on most things and gets very very little of anything in. I also thought she was drinking water from a cup but have noticed that she doesn't actually drink much mostly it just dribbles out again. She does't like gagging and after this has happened she won't try anymore food, even favs.
i thought by 8 months she would be getting some food in.
she is abit of a lightweight, still gaining weight but i don't want this to slow too much. She also breastfeeds alot over night- is she hungry or is it for comfort? why doesn't (can't) she sleep through? she still BFs as often as a newborn
