PS We hadn't intended on spaghetti as the first food, and he had trouble picking it up, but we'll start with finger foods over the next few weeks. Tonight was just a trial run.

I feel like a horrible mumma. Friday night we were at my mums as usual, we have dinner there every week, I gave DD2 the tuna bake that my mum made, without even thinking that she gets it out of the jar and doesn't make it from scratch with lactose free cream like we do. Then I couldn't understand why she had horrible runs that burnt her bum Saturday and gave her wind. I was thinking I had eaten to much dairy myself and passed to much onto her, until I was sitting there Tuesday and it clicked. She's better now but I feel stupid:doh: Looks like she is still lactose intolerant :cry:
I spent forever yesterday at the shops searching for sachets of lactose free formula, which are meant to exist but I can't find anywhere, I visited our baby nurse and she rescued me with a free pack. Luv her. I didn't want to buy a whole tin just to use maybe 4 bottle out of it before it goes off. I've since found the sachets online but it works out to $14 a packet, which is nasty. Off tomorrow to try to convince our local chemist to stock them.
DD is 1 in a couple of weeks and she still barely swallows much. Some days are great and she really seems hungry and eats a lot. Other days... she just takes a bite out of each thing.
We've only ever done BLS, which we started at about 7months.
We just offer what we eat, plus plenty of snacks during the day.
She's not fussy I don't think, justnot that hungry I guess?
Things are still the same for us..... although, I got all excited yesterday after we'd had morning tea of rockmelon and watermelon - it looked like she'd actually eaten it!! But upon further inspection, there was actually a stash of food down the front of her singlet :ROFL: Too cute!

Hi turtleshell :hello: babies are funny like that, but I guess they know whats best for themselves. Both mine the same, some days are hoovers, others a pickers. She obviously doesn't require it otherwise she would eat more of what you offer.
AFM I gave DD2 a whole nectarine today, it was hilarious watching her pulls faces every time she tried to bite the furry skin, before I knew it i was rescuing the seed because she had mushed it that much.
Hi guys, it's great to be able to share our BLS journeys. I have to admit, already I am worried about the "amount" of food DD is getting. I am reassuring myself with the food is fun until they're 1 thing and I have also seen improvements along the way but I guess I want to know for people who have been down the whole process of BLS and come out the other end - when did their kids start eating? Because at this very early stage, puree kids are eating sooo much more and putting on sooo much more weight as well. I know I sound a bit negative but I am seriously LOVING the whole BLS thing and so is DD. But has anyone found that their babies want to copy you exactly? DD is really interested in my fork so I picked up some food and showed it to her and she grabbed the fork and put it in her mouth!! So I think I need to get a baby fork for her to play with. She LOVES the spoon.

DD2 is 10 months and she pretty much just consumed a whole bowl (heinz unbelievable bowl) of spaghetti and meatballs. Today she has also eaten half a large banana, about half a bowl of porridge with apple puree, slice bread with tuna, lettuce and cucumber, although she picks out the lettuce and tosses it from the highchair, and a vegemite milk arrowroot. Its only been in the last few weeks that she has actually started eating all that is put in front of her and not just playing with it. She was born a big girl but her weight has dropped from 97th percentile to 50th, which I don't personally think has any thing to do with how much she eats or drinks (still a booby monster with min 6 feeds a day), she has just gotten more active and I don't think genetically was prone to be big forever.
DD was not done by BLS, by this age she consumed 2 extra large jars equivalent a day plus a couple of snacks and by 1 it was 3+ jars. She was only ever 50th percentile and still is. She at a huuuggee amount for her age, but it didn't effect her weight. I think they are all just different, and will eat different amounts and it doesn't necessarily mean their weight will be different either, otherwise DD2 would have been the size of a house, I think its just genetically how they will grow as long as they are happy with the amount they are consuming and not getting aggravated by not enough.
One time I got into a debate over the quantity DD2 was eating and to prove fact to my mother, got an old baby food jar and shoved the vegetables DD was going to have for dinner into it, it well and truly filled it and she pretty much ate the whole lot. Sometimes I think because non-jarred food is harder to quantify then it appears to be less.
And DD2 loves playing with spoons and forks, I just give her one at every meal and let her experiment with it, usually it just stabs at things and eventually gets thrown but already she gets the concept. DD1 was well to 18months before she mastered a spoon.
Studymum, you're a great person to have in this thread because you've seen and are seeing both sides of the way to introduce solids. You're such a reassurance for me.

I've noticed DD eats more when we are out of the house, perhaps because I am less inclined to wack the boob out so soon!
I tend to just give her one item at a time, wait till she's done with it before offering something else. It's easier for me coz less wastage if she isn't hungry.
Should I be serving it all up in front of her in one go?
Turtleshell, the books says to do it exactly the way you are. Give them little bits at a time as if you give them too much they are likely to lose interest pretty quickly and the whole lot gets launched! :):

Anyone given their bub a lemon to suck on? DD loves it! Though I've only done it once.. bit worried about the acidity affecting her new teeth!
I did this with DD as well and by the time she was one she was an expert with both a fork and spoon. I have it on video - her happily eating butter chicken and rice with a spoon with hardly any mess!:
Learning to use a knife has been a bit more challenging...

Can I ask when you first gave your little one egg? The BLW book says that hard scrambled egg is fine from 6 months but I'm just not sure.
And also, we gave DD a peanut butter sandwich the other day (well, DH did) and I was a bit freaked - again for the allergy thing. She didn't have a reaction though, and like DH LOVED the peanut butter sanger!
What are your thoughts?
