Dr Google seems to believe that egg yolk can be introduced between 7 - 9 months and if that's okay then egg white 10 - 12 months. There doesn't seem to be any other reason than potential allergic reactions which can range from skin irritations to full blown unable to breathe. Seems to me that this is the case with alot of foods and unfortunately it's a bit of trial and error. I just have to decide when I want to give it a go - will be sooner rather than later though as I am keen to start using eggs in cooking for her.
-
I know some people who have reactions to egg cooked by itself but are ok with it in cooking.
My MCHN suggested starting by dipping toast into the egg yolk. I don't like wet egg yolk though so there's not really anything to dip into.

Persephone I too thought holding off eggs was only if there were known allergies in the family, like most higher risk foods. I first gave DD a boiled egg a couple of months ago, plus she is offered either fried or scrambled every Sunday morning. Just today we both shared an egg sandwich for lunch. But with that said, the only known allergy in DH's family is shellfish so that's the only thing we've steered clear of.
-
Did you start off with the whole egg Human bean or just the yolk?
-
We did the whole egg fairly early on here - scrbled egg is my failsafe these days :)
-
Whole egg Shell, just boiled and sliced it up. Took her a few goes as it can be slippery to hold but she loves them now. She prefers scrambled to fried, and the other day I made french toast (our version is simply bread dipped in egg and milk then fried) and she devoured it!

I'm with Swoop and egg....scrambled went down a treat so killed two egg birds with one stone :)

Hi All, I've been a bit MIA, some idiot thought it was a good idea to do 2 uni courses through summer semester, oh yeah that idiot would be me :wall: I hope everyone had a lovely christmas and welcomed in the new year.
Persephone, I had to giggle at the chilli thing, it reminded me the night we gave DD2 curried sausages, she started off chowing it down, then half way through stopped and grabbed her water bottle lightning fast, had a huge drink and straight back into it, except she kept stopping to vigorously rub her mouth and face, while still attempting to shovel more in :D. DD1 used to love sweet chilly philli too.
Kate, bf bubs wil find it very hard to get truly constipated, bm is a natural laxative. Its not uncommon for them to go up to 10 days, although this lack of frequency should reduce as they get older and solids becomes the main source of diet. I'd say she is adjusting to the new sensation, they are quite used to very soft mushy stools and I found with both mine they weren't too fond of it when it got harder, they would get a little irritable and grunt and stop to do them. To begin with though I found DD2 couldn't have banana everyday as it upset her, she can now though.
Tal, in fact rice cereal causes problems for a lot of babies, too much iron in it and upset tummies. We gave anything to begin with except high allergy foods, like egg, nuts, strawberry, seafood. But why 9 months we have introduced all these except nuts (although I know she has stolen some of her sisters penut butter sandwich). We just took steamed vege when we went out to begin with. Now its anything, sandwiches, fruit, cheese anything I can quickly shove in the bag.
Humanbean, we don't peel, mainly because I want her to learn without having to do it. I just start her off a bit so she can get her teeth into it. She does great now, eats apple skin and all, nectarines, peaches etc she will squish away at until she gets past the skin.
Starangelk, tuna, salmon and egg are fav's here. I have to cook the scrambled egg when she isnt looking cause if she knows its coming she throws a fit until she gets it, which takes forever to cool down. :D
AFM, things are going great here. Her straw bottle is a fav, she loves crawling around with the straw and bottle hanging out of her mouth. DF gave her a tupperware sippy cup the other day, which went really well drinking wise, until she realised when you turn it upside down water spills out on the floor  Her favourite atm is rice, anything rice related is demolished.
Seen as everyone was discussing what they give their LO's, this is what we normally have. I don't worry atm about separating breakfast lunch and dinner, she tends to have whatever whenever. She usually haves porridge with cut up fruit, yoghurt with muesli mixed in, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, avocado or vegemite toast, any fruit we have on offer, any vege or salad too, salmon, tuna, spag bog, sausage, coucous, risotto, rice crackers, mini salad wraps. Sometimes she is way hungry before 5 and before I have dinner ready, so I just chuck fresh salad stuff like corn, peas, tomato, grated cheese, mushroom, grated carrot on her highchair and she eats away while I cook dinner. She also loves sultanas, doesn't really eat them properly cause they come out the other end looking like grapes :p

Sounds like everyone has had a lovely Christmas!
We had a bit of a setback over the festive period as DD got a really bad cold in her chest, so food wasn't really on her agenda. I was a bit worried about my BM supply so one day I wrote down every time she had a b/f - and she had 17 feeds one day :o Every time we sat down to a meal, she'd spew something back up in a ball of phlegm. We're only just getting back into it again now. :( I feel like every time we get somewhere, something sets us back. The same thing happened when we were in the UK in October.
Anyway, am hoping that she'll show more of an interest again now.
As for the egg thing, we've been having it since around 7 months, she loves to have scrambled egg and the other day DH dipped a toast soldier into his yolk and she LOVED that. Had egg yolk all over her face.

Thanks everyone :) I was going to wait until 6months, but everyone else seems to be starting solids early so I wasn't sure what the latest thing was. I did a bit more reading and we are still going to wait. I think he is just so curious about what the stuff is that we are putting into our mouths but then he wants EVERYTHING atm!!
Will keep popping in from time to time until we are ready :)

Just wondering how everyone is going with milk feeds now that solids have been started? DD seems to have dropped her mid morning feed which I find a bit strange because she doesn't have a big feed when she gets up in the morning. So now we are having a BF when she wakes, then breakfast straight away and then back to bed after 1 - 2 hours. Then traditionally she would wake up and be due for her next BF but she doesn't seem to want it anymore. So we've been giving her some morning tea, but mostly in the form of hard rice biscuits, which are sort of like those teething rusks you buy.
Sorry it's a bit off topic but I think this means she is actually eating more? I find it really hard to tell.
-
starangelk, i too find it hard to tell.
When we are out and about, DD goes ages without BF; if we are out all day she only BF 4 times (and then some overnight ones which are her habit) but if I stay at home, she always wants to BF.
I don't know, so confusing!
-
DD always wants to be attached to my boob! hehe :) Still feeding pretty regular here but it can vary, i just go with it , it all hurts my head to much :)
We also love rice here and along with noodles ,and iv never seen someone eat so many cherry tomatos before :)
It was pretty funny actually, we were with some family of DF and they were being funny about BLS and brought her a jar of baby food, some mush chicken risotto, . Put it on DD's high chair she played with it and wouldn't eat it, tried it but then went nup, so we gave her some of our food, which was salad ,with wild mushroom risotto, she ate it all, and left the jar mush whoch she ended up pushing off onto the floor lol..Go DD :)

Haha shel!
I didn't know strawberries were a high allergy food!? Dd haas eaten heaps of them, in fact it is one food I know that actually goes down her throat and she will eat half of it at a time!
We are trying to do more veges, but being summer and having so many fruits available, its just so easy to give her fruit. She dos love her cucumber and tomato atm. Tomato she sucks the insides out of, and that includes the flesh now. She still has no teeth yet to help her though.

Starangelk, to begin with it made no difference to DD2's bf's, and she was actually consuming a fair bit. I don't think it does much even now, it changes for us daily pretty much. Some days her first morning feed is between 5 and 6, and she will go back to sleep till 7/8 then wake up and have breakfast, other times like today she had a feed at 5 and another when she woke up at 8, then breakfast half an hour later. Then a nap and a bf when she wake, then lunch, then another bf before her arvo nap, then wakes, has a snack and dinner about 6, then a bf before bed and a midnight bf. I am guessing she is having her 1 year growth spurt week though as she has increased feeds from 5 a day to about 8 or 9, and is waking for an extra one at night. I tend to gauge how much goes in by how much comes out and how many times a day. I know when she has been a little piggy it can be a couple of times a day.
Turtleshell, DD2 does the same thing, if we are out and about I don't even bother trying anymore, and if I am not with her at all she just waits till I get back. Now if we have to go to parties at night or something and she is to busy partying I just give her a bottle, otherwise I will pay for it during the night when she decides she has to make up for partying to hard and skipping meals.:D
Shell, that is a classic. The only thing out of a jar we give is gel, she loves it when its chilled on a really hot day, probably quite refreshing, DD1 much loved cold gel too.
Tali, yes its quite common for young bubs to get skin reactions, and digestion/stool reactions from strawberry, most grow out of it luckily. Its rare for it to be life threatening though. My pour niece would come out with a inflamed nasty rash around her mouth, now she is fine and loves them. We chill leftover steamed veg and she loves eating them for snacks. Its good to try to get stronger or bitter flavoured foods such as veges in their diet otherwise the dear little sweet tooths can get a preference for more sweetish foods. And its amazing what they can accomplish eating without any chompers.:)
I was just wondering what kind of spreads everyone is using. We mainly just use vegemite, and occasionally cheese spread, I don't want to start jams. I try to get her to like hommus but she think it makes grand finger painting patterns on her highchair best, although she has been eating it a little better. Or I've been making up a tuna spread and she loves that. I am just getting bored with the variety, I doubt she is though.
-
Hi Studymum. We are using vegemite (or mightymite which is the same) and hommus as spreads. I am also using cottage cheese and avocado for toast/rice crackers. How are you making the tuna spread? It sounds great. Thanks for the tip re stronger flavours - I might try some curried sausages later in the week.
Dinner tonight for the little miss is left over pork roast, roast potato and peas. Then maybe some yoghurt or rice flakes with sultanas.
-
Oh I'd forgotten about cottage cheese, although I am still having to slowly introduce dairy products with her previous problems. We've managed a bottle of lactose free milk okay, so a few days later I gave her normal yogurt to, it seems to have given her very loose stool but not diarrhea, so I might wait another few days before trying again. Unfortunately its slow and steady with recovery from dairy/lactose intolerance, been all the way through it with DD1 before.
I use a homemade mayo (I guess regular would work to) and just flake the tuna as much as possible, and add different things like mustard, sun-dried tomato paste or pestos to it. I have only been making small batches out of a small tin of tuna and it lasts about 2 meals for her on either bread or cruskits.
