Definitely not bad peanutter.
Not a bad mother at all! I think we all have times where we just don't fancy whatevers on the menu! At least he ate something :)
Not bad at all Peanutter - I often give up and resort to yoghurt at dinner times!
today he wasn't eating much for dinner, but would eat noodles and bamboo shoots and carrots off my fingers ... *sigh* ... but at least he was eating them!
today he's enjoying racehorses for tea :) nice batter mix with leftover roast beef, carrot, potato and some shallots.
racehorses?
I know not the beast
fritters from description?
Peanutter, don't worry if he doesn't want to eat. They won't starve themselves and I've alsways found (especially when younger) they ahve 'eating days' and non-eating days and it all evens out in the end.
Nutter - I have realised that dinner is DD's absolute worst meal of the day. It's generally even worse when she has a daycare day as she eats so much more at daycare..... I still can't figure that out but putting it down to seeing the other kids eat and doing what they do (in a massive adult serving sized way.) I think because that's her tired time, she often just eats 1 or 2 things to please us and then starts pulling off her bib and climbing out of her high chair. We've had to put a harness on her IKEA high chair to stop it from being dangerous so that stopped the climbing out thankfully but she makes it very clear when she's done and that's that. I just have to trust she knows what she is doing but her being on the low side of weight (10th percentile) does not help me. I actually thought she was 25th percentile but after consulting the red book - I was wrong.
Starangelk, how did you attach your harness? we have the same high chair, and the strap does nothing. DD just stands up and dances in the chair when she has had enough. Thought about drilling a couple holes at the top for shoulder straps- do you have an easier way?
My DD struggles at night to eat if she is tired. Recently, she has been ok but a few weeks back dinner was a few bites if that. I would offer more during the day, (always hoping that a full tummy would lead to good sleep). I have also given her cereal for dinner, when she has grabbed the box out of the cupboard, cos i know sometimes i feel like strange meals and maybe that's hers.
Hoti - I am so proud of my harnessing efforts :) We had this harness that we got in a target bounty bag for free, it was one of those walking ones and it was in the cupboard unused. I just took off the lead part and was left with the bit that goes around their shoulders and clips up at the back. I also had these other 2 bits coming from that on either side of her back which I looped through the slats in the bottom of the high chair and did them up. The shoulder part actually detaches totally from the 2 lead parts. So I just put her in the shoulder part, then put her in the high chair and click one side of the shoulder part into the lead part that goes through the slats. She's too big to click the other side because the straps aren't long enough but it seems to keep her contained. I am looking for a 5 point harness that I will be able to wrangle somehow. What I found is that it's not that she needs to be secured against the backrest and I'd prefer her to be able to reach for her food/water anyway, it's just that she needs that downward pressure on her shoulders to remind her to sit when she tries to stand.
We had dinner at 4pm for a long time as DS was just too tired to eat any later.
Hi ladies,
My DD is one of those "fussy" ones - at almost ten months old, I thought she would be eating WAY more than she is. I have a couple of friends with bubs of similar ages, and my DD eats the least - and of course I am the one doing BLS so no "show off" factor here at all! In fact, quite the opposite. I wonder if I am BF her too much?
Anyway, it seems that DD just likes to eat porridge, bread, crackers/biscuits, and mashed potato/pumkin, with the odd cheese stick thrown in, ven caseroles or pasta dishes, she just picks the potato or the pasta and throws the rest, And I don't mean a delicate drop over the edge either, but a huge sweeping windscreen wiper arm that sends the food flying about 2 metres, no splatter mat is big enough. It's like she doesn't like food. Even at Day Care she hardley eats. But she is not underweight, so is obviouly getting enough from me, I just really thought that she would enjoy food more than she is. She would eat the equivalent of abot a teaspoon full at any meal, but generally only twice per day. Any suggestions?
Hi Milly5 - at 10 months she's still learning about what she likes and doesn't like and how to pick up and hold things even. Have you heard the saying "Food is fun until they're 1?" I love that saying and it is so true, these first 6 months of BLS are really just a learning thing. I know you have been but keep persisting with foods she doesn't like and you may find she comes around. Also be sure to offer her lots of new foods for variety. I found that making vegie muffins was a great way to get DD to try other types of vegies and we'd also bake them, fry them, steam them etc etc. She'll eat stir fried cauliflour but not steamed..........go figure. With the BFing thing, that is bubs most important nurtitional value at her age so I wouldn't be worried you are doing it too much. To try and encourage her to eat more, just consider when you are BFing her. Are you offering food first? If you are BFing first or in the couple of hours before - she might just not be hungry? Don't be too concerned and I def don't recommend spoon feeding her, that will just confuse her imo. Just keep doing what you are doing - you are doing a great job!
My LO took awhile to get the hang of eating, and she is still not a huge eater, but she is willing to try most things. ALthough, the last couple of days she has had big bowls (for her) of pasta that she really enjoyed.
If your little one is throwing heaps of food, reduce the amount you are offering. There might be too much on her plate so she can't decide what to go for. Try one food at a time, or 2 or 3 different things but not heaps of each. if she shows interest in one food then you can always give her more.
milly - keep offering as much boob as she'll take - it's still the absolute best food she can have for the time being :)
and as for foods, I second the points made by starangelk and hoti.
DS also took a while to "get it" and transition from food being a really cool, mooshable, spreadable, shove-up-the-nose-able toy, to realising it filled up his little belly and is awesome!
And now he litterally eats more than me some meals ... I swear there is a tardis or a porthole of something in his oesophagas sometimes ...
But just keep checking the number of wet and dirty nappies, how well is she playing and sleeping, and let your gut (excuse the pun) guide you
Hey hey, how's everyone doing?? I am still <3ing the BLS concept, even more so in the last few days. DD has been referred to a pead for her low body weight and I have gone on the defensive because I know she eats really well. So....I've been keeping a food diary for her. It's actually quite fun and I am so so so amazed at the amount of food she is able to get down in a day. I am also really a bit proud of the variety that she is getting. However, I have noticed that I am probably not feeding her enough meat. We aren't vegetarians but we don't eat alot of red meat at our place. Most of her red meat would be in the form of sausages or mince through bolognese. I'm trying to think of some other ideas to get some red meat into her but so far have only come up with home made sausage rolls which is still just mince and I'd probably chuck in a heap of vegies. Any ideas?
I've also been trying to make a conscious effort to give her some more higher fat foods. She already ate quite a bit of dairy and all full fat foods but once again DH and I tend to eat fairly healthily and don't cook with oils or butter etc. Anyway, cheese is one of my very few vices and I had some left over camembert from home made pizzas the other night. I've tried to give this to her before and she wasn't fussed but today I cut it into cubes and she wolfed down about 1/5th of the round! So that was her extra fat serve for the day - LOL.
I've got some vegie bake in the oven at the moment with some cream, cheese, ricotta and extra milk powder mixed in......hopefully it works out and tastes delicious for her. But there I go again with the non meat foods!
Hope everyone else is going great.
DS gets a fair bit of meat, from roasts to pan friend steak or grilled chops, curries, stirfries, pasta or pastabakes with meat, lasagnae (a fave!) and mexican.
HTH
Curries or casseroles where the meat gets very tender are good for the littlies. Also rissoles. Chille con carne is also a hit here
