Yeah we can't do dinner as DD is in bed before we cook dinner, plus we are on light n easy for dinners at the moment. I've just been giving her bits and pieces of whatever I have around, when I think of it so I've been a bit sloppy with it I confess.
Hi there everyone... I'm just joining this thread now cause DD is almost 6 months and we're going to start BLW then. I've just finished reading the BLW book by Gill Rapley and I'm excited to try it! I've just gone and bought a few smock bibs and a PVC tablecloth and floor protector. I've got a booster seat type high chair. Anything else I'm going to need before we start? What foods do you think I should do first?
ETA: She will be feeding on my lap for the first few weeks as she's still in a brace for hip dysplasia and hasn't learned to sit up yet as she's been unable to. But once that's started we can use the booster/high chair.

was just popping in to refresh my memory again. Feels like so long ago that I had one starting solids lol. Holly will be my third BLS kiddo. She seems to have taken to it with much gusto....or that should be gutso :D
LL I always do it after a feed - purely because they're generally cranky before and unlikely to sit in a chair, no scientific reason. But I have to say, haphazard has always worked for us. I was anal about starting at a particular meal with DD1. But TBH I don't think it really matters. What ever works for you and your bub. Some say earlier in the day is better in case they react with a yuck belly, but I have found that with the whole new food thing, most bubs get a little bit upset as their gut is adjusting.

We started last weekend (H is 6months tomorrow :0) with a bit of pear and was very 'meh', but she loved the broccoli we offered the next day. I actually got into trouble from DS, "Mum!! You're not allowed to give her food! She only has milk! Nothing else!"
I just offer what I have available that she can have a crack at.

There's no real 'rules' about what to start and when is there?
2.5 yr old DD also told us off when we started offering 6 m.o. DS food!
i got a pear and quartered it, and DS was quite a fan. I think he ate half of it, and DD got the other half.
zucchini and corn were favs too. roast pumpkin and cooked apple not so much.
DS is taking to food a lot quicker than DD did. i'm not sure about introducing foods that DD had reactions to. Do subsequent children have greater risk of reacting to same foods? the reactions were not life threatening, more rashes etc that over time she outgrew.

She has def preferred the savouries though. Cucumber is one she loves. She eats it right down to the skin.
Pasta was a hit, and she has learned that she can demolish a rusk.
Hmm not sure about the allergens. I have to say I'm a bit the same about DS's. i'm super paranoid about peanut butter. It's all my DS eats now but he couldn't have it until recently due to the rashing. Was going to hold off on strawberries too as DD1 rashed up with them, but she was being helpful the other day and shared lol. No rash though.

No honey until after 12 mths and whole nuts until 5. Other than that anything goes as far as I can remember. Although I delayed lettuce type stuff as it stuck to the roof of ds2's mouth when I tried it early.:

DD2 eats with me, except dinner. I don't really give her food too late as it was making it hard to settle her at night. She had a bellyache. :(
So I sit down with her for breakfast and lunch and I give her something at morning and afternoon tea or snacks, whenever I eat really. I save dinner leftovers and give that to her at lunch or after her nap.
She won't eat if she's hungry and wants a bf. She's starting to be able to tell me when she wants bbs. It takes her a while to study something before she tries it. She loves bread, strawberries and cucumber! She has tried everything I've had in the last few weeks pretty much and even eats spicy stuff.
My DD1 was eating whole nuts before 2 without issue. We love nuts here! Is it the choking thing?
Whole nuts can be a choking issue - we've done peanut butter and crushed nuts baked in stuff.
What about citrus fruits? I've heard a no-no?
Wel, DD2 loves mandarin so I don't see any reason why not here! DD1 used to like it as a baby too. She did gag on a long stringy bit once, but once she'd coughed that up she popped it all right back in her mouth.
It's more about them eating what we eat and then keeping an eye on them IMO than about excluding foods. If you have family history with allergies you might want to either hold off or be careful when you introduce likely culprits, but otherwise I wouldn't. FWIW both DP and I have intolerances but neither of our DDs seem to so far.
DD now thinks it is ok for DS to eat foods. She eats her toast and then gives him the crust! She knows the 'rules' of BLS though, she puts it on his tray for him to pick up himself. DS has had mandarin and enjoyed it. Both kids loved raw zucchini tonight! I only offered it while i was waiting for zucchini sticks to steam, DS preferred the raw to cooked tonight.
We keep an eye on acidic stuff but we don't exclude it :)
DS2 is six months old soon!! I wonder when he'll start showing an interest in food ... Or rolling or sitting for that matter :)
We don't give anything orange. But not because I know not to - it just makes me too sick. There is too much risk it will touch me in the prep or cleanup.
PN I have a non roller and a non sitter too.
It's so funny to go from 2 kids who took a while to get used to eating and food to go to one who looks like she was born to eat lol. She's been on solids for a week and a bit and she has it down pat. She cracked it today when the big kids got afternoon tea so we gave her a wholemeal apple pikelet - she wasn't giving it up for love nor money. Wasn't even much left to feed the chooks. Hummus was a hit too.
HotI DS has figured out she'll compost his crusts too lol.
We tried a strawberry today. But I have a confession to make- I'm really scared of BLS! Like super scared. She was so ferocious trying to chow it down I was worried she'd chomp it into big pieces and choke. So I helped her hold it. I think it gave her a bad tummy ache though as tonight she took ages to settle before her big sleep and started screaming just when I thought she had nodded off, then screamed on and off for half an hour. I blame the strawberry only because she's been eating porridge and avocado no worries and this was a new introduction.

We've been going 2 days now and all we've managed is for DD to pick up a stick of softened apple and a stick of toast (separate occasions) and wave them around and bash them on the table, lol. Even that took a good 10 mins each time. I'll keep persisting though cause even though she's not eating them, at least she is playing with them and getting pick up and hold practice :)
It takes them a while to start eating sometimes. DS ate from 6 months. DD... was 7.5 months before she stopped gagging and vomiting everything that made it into her mouth. No eating really till over 8 months.
After two days DD was very similar, she preferred to just play and anything that made it to her mouth didn't really get swallowed anyway. It was easily two months before she was properly eating and even now some days she just doesn't care for food preferring to breastfeed more.
DD has days (like today) where she is so eager to eat her little hands practically shake in anticipation as she reaches for food. Other days she's very 'meh'. She doesn't really muck around though even if she's not eating much as her nappies are most definitely foodie nappies now lol. She loves porridge with apple, in fact anything with apple. Not so keen on pumpkin, loves avocado, a bit blah with carrots.
I totally agree with the PPs. My older two kids took quite a bit of time to actually eat.
DD2 however, side swiped her brothers spoon right out of his hand this morning at breakfast! lol she was so pleased with herself....DS was not so.
Okay we're getting better each day, but DD gets frustrated very quickly. I can tell she just wants to eat it but hasn't got the skills yet. Do I persist when she starts whinging or have a break?
I tend to persist a bit by putting food back within her reach a few times. She does make it known with no uncertainty when she's had enough. However, I know it's against the 'rules' but if something is really slimy (like melon) I do hold it for her. She loves it and goes crazy sucking it. I just hold my hand still and let her do her thing.
keep offering, but don't let yourself be phased by whether or not she eats :)
She has upped her night time booby feeds!! Aargh! I have tried to hold her off but she won't have a bar of it and practically strangles my nipples. I really want to continue with BLW but I'm getting no sleep!
Phebee :hug: do you think there is a link between bls and her waking?
FWIW Miss H has upped hers and her sleep has gone to poo too (they are only days apart aren't they?). I'm pretty sure it's a developmental thing at this age. My other two did the same.
Yeah I'm getting a lot of purée-fed parents saying the same, so I'm guessing it's developmental. Sigh.
Last night was DD2's worst night ever so maybe it's the phase of the moon! :rolleyes:
BLS still going well here, she's now ignoring the bowl in favour of the food (tidier!). Favourite of the moment is strawberries.
DD is getting frustrated all the time cause a lot of foods are too slippery or difficult to get in her mouth :(
How is everyone doing apple?
Apple we cut up quite thinly, sometimes peeled as it is easier for Buster to hold it with the peel on. He manages it very well, sometimes I grate it instead.
Just raw? When you say thinly do you mean in typical apple wedge slices but very thin ones or in very thin chip-type sticks?
For DS, who is 8 months, i cut it into slices and then steam it in the microwave.:
He has also had dried nashy apples slices.
For DD, we also gave her a whole apple with some skin removed. She just kinda grated bits off with her teeth. Haven't tried it yet with DS.
Yeah I just give it to him raw, that's how he has always had it. Just trying to think how I cut it up...I guess I cut it into normal wedges then cut them up into 3 or 4 slices. Hard to explain!
I like the idea of giving a whole apple though, hadn't thought of that.
Just cut into quarters, skin on here for apple. DD1 had it that way and still loves it, DD2 will gum for ages (still no teeth here).
Same as Jen. Bigger bits, skin on.
DD2 has been swiping my half eaten apple the last couple of days as well - no cutting required! Lol
I tried quarters, she found it really difficult to pick up, so I cut them into eighths. Slightly better but still very cumbersome. She managed to gnaw some edges a little so they weren't perfectly straight. Huge success OTOH later in the day with a milk arrowroot and with broccoli florets :)
