health and safety risk apparently. Noone in the shopping complex would!
I work in hospitality and I do understand to a certain extent the problems with heating bottles for people so maybe if I explain where I come from it may help make sense.
Although I do believe it is not too hard just use your noggin and help and I certainly would, sometimes it is a real problem. If the person you have asked to heat a bottle has never had a baby or looked after one (as was the case when I was younger) there can be disastrous consequences. It is just too easy to over heat a bottle. This can mean having to then wait for the bottle to cool with a screaming bub or worse, being unaware that the milk is over heated and scalding a babies mouth. This is the big concern with microwaves, they 'spot' heat and if the bottle is not shaken to mix, the sample you test could be cold with potential hot spots throughout the bottle. Secondly, yes, the microwave can ruin the goodies within the ebm. Other heating methods have problems also when in the hands of an inexperienced person.
So the logical thing is to supply some hot water and let mum/carer do the work. I understand if there are health and safety issues with supplying the hot liquid, perhaps in that shopping center there is a rule not allowing it. There may have been a circumstance where someone supplied a cup of hot water and it ended up burning someone. Although it is no different in some ways than supplying a cup of black tea... there may be a different way the law approaches this situation. Unfortunately it smacks of an overly litigious society :(.
As I said, I am not really agreeing with the policy, common sense should rule and I would certainly do my best to help out a mum/carer in that situation, but I do understand what may be going on there.
I would second the suggestion of taking some hot water in a thermos to warm up the precious EBM. OR what about simply warm water? Surely warm water could heat up a bottle sufficiently without heading into the *dangerous* territory.
I am sorry your poor Ashton suffered from missing out on his milk missymoo84, it is such a shame that something that should have been really simple, is such an issue and you and Ashton have to bear the consequences in such an unpleasant manner. (And now be even more super prepared in the future!!!)
It's all good Jackrose. I wasn't upset that the centre wouldn't give hot water, I understand that. There is a parents room there with a microwave which is why I didn't understand why mum didn't heat it, Yes it would loose some of its goodness but surely it's better than nothing!
It's ok cos she knows now :) I think I was annoyed too because I dropped him at the house thinking they were going to be staying there, and then I hear they went to the shopping mall for no reason really. I was hoping she would have kept him home, gave him his bottle and put him to bed like he usually has.
Oh well, next time she knows now.
Solids.... well Ashton didn't have any yesterday and he slept right through last night... weird!
the whole thing seems quite weird to me, as I've asked for, and received mugs of hot water without an issue... but so saying, i don't think I necessarily specified what it was for... just asked for the water and they handed it over. Mebbe they thought I was some kinda health nut drinking hot water har har! The biggest nuisance is that some places don't have mugs that are big enough to easily put my bottle in. The other thing I often do is heat the EBM before I go if I know he's going to have it soon - he doesn't mind it room temp if it's cooled a little.
Anyways, 'nuff said, but i couldn't resist joining in the convo!
I've had the same thing at a shopping centre before too. I asked for a cup of hot water and they wouldn't give it to me because it is a health and saftey issue and I was told to use a microwave in the parents room or the hot water tap in there.
I thought this was extremely odd since the place I was at could serve me with a hot cup of tea or coffee! I was tempted just to buy a cup of tea to put it in!!
And I know about the microwave not heating evenly and destroying the goodies in EBM. Not to mention the issues of the chemicals in the plastic!! But the 'hot' water tap in the parents room isn't actually hot. It is warm... again for the health and safety reasons. Certainly not hot enough to warm a bottle of EBM, let alone one that has only just defrosted.
So, damned if you do, damned if you don't. But really sorry to hear that poor Ashton had an overfull tum MissyMoo. Poor little guy!
has anyone started their bub on solids then stopped? Ash has gone 2 days without anything. Yesterday was because he was asleep most of the day cos he isn't well, and today he just wasn't interested! He slept right through last night too. He hasn't been feeding any more then usual...
I don't think he is hungry... would there be any negative things going on with not feeding him food in 2 days? It's just for fun isn't it... I suppose I think I just answered my question. lol
Mel, I have. DS isn't really fussed about solids- if we miss a day because of whatever is going on, it really seems to make very little difference to him, because he is still just playing. I know this will change in time!
DD was off her food recently when she was sick. I'm sure he'll be back into it when he's feeling better.
I have. There was one day where he was asleep whenever we were eating but he got straight back to it the next day. And exactly as you put it, it is just for fun, so long as they are getting their milk for now it shouldn't matter. He will return to it when he is feeling better.
Remember he doesn't need it to be well nourished, just keep that milk flow up!!
Ahhh, I did misinterpret your post (the inevitable issues of the written word ;)) so thanks for understanding me and explaining.
I would certainly be as annoyed as you at the situation. It's a pity we can duplicate ourselves for looking after our young ones *sigh*. At least we know what we should/would do .
and in response to your recent question...
...all the time! When we first started it was stop and go for a month or two, with more stop than go. Then, all of a sudden it became much more go. I think you are spot on with the answer you gave yourself, the old 'food is for fun till they are one' is the mantra that was always there for us too.:
has anyone started their bub on solids then stopped?
And as the others have mentioned, being a little sick can have an effect also. Even at 15 months, DD went without much food for a few days last week when she was sick. (Which then led to me and DH off our food for a few days ). All back to normal now though!!
Just posting our latest food favourite... lasagne!!
He's had it a couple of times now and each time he keeps shovelling it down, long after he would have stopped with any other meals! He has to take mini breaks to rest in between feeding frenzies!!!
Oh and another thing he's loving doing atm too is sucking on ice. I put him in his high-chair and put a couple of cubes on his tray and he chases them all over the place trying to catch one. He usually does which is quite amazing and really does prove how good BLS is for manual dexterity and fine motor skills. I think he loves the challenge.
Jack had avocado the other night..picked it up squished it in his hand..then shoved whatever he had left in his hands straight into his mouth....he loved it!!!!
Ashton had corn yesterday :) I was so impressed that he could pick up the corn kernals!! I also tried him on a little pasta but he didn't like it and just ended up playing with it.
OMG Molly Jane LOVE LOVE LOVES corn on the cob... we cut it into wheels (good when they have teeth) and she attacks it, she eats it right down to the husk then puts her hand out for more!
He current fav is Tuna in white sauce, its easy peasy to make, i just make a white sauce, add a tin of Tuna in springwater(drained) add some pre cooked veggies and cook.
She has it with penne, bow or swirl pasta and she cant shovel it in fast enough!
For her fisrt bday dinner she has spaghetti on toast (the canned variety ) she really had fun with teh worms and sucked them in, it was so messy but she had a great time - we also enjoyed it for dinner - been a while since i had that!
i was eating a tuna wrap for lunch yesterday and grace was looking very keen to try a bit, i broke a bit off, with tuna, avo, lettuce and some of the wrap and she LOVED it!! ended up eating loads. she is also loving kiwi fruit. got salmon for dinner so see if she likes that. she loves peas but cant pick them up on her own yet...and gets so frustrated she just ends up pushing them all on the floor...she really tries!! so i have been helping her a little, i sqish one a pop in on the end of my finger, she either takes it off my finger or grabs my finger and shoves it in her mouth! she will eat so many if i help her!
she hasnt worked out how to get at the food in the palm of her hand yet, so she grabs the food up in her palm but has trouble getting the food out...the fist goes in the mouth...but unless there is any bits hanging out she doesnt get much in....is this normal for her age!? she is 7 months!!
Forgot to mention, at MJ's 12mth check up, MJ was playing with a little toy teapot. the cmhn said, oh wow, her dexterity is fantastic for her age, did you see how she picked up that teapot and took off the lid?
I didnt think that somethink like that was a big deal (admittedly the handle was small and it was a bit fiddley i guess).. anyway we continued talking and we were talking about soilds, then the penny dropped for her.
Oh she said 'your doing BLS arent you, well thats why she is so good and handling objects'
We also talked about a spoon, and she asked me if MJ is interested in the spoon, yep i said and she eats from it now too - she cant load it yet, but she feeds herself with the spoon if i load it and then hands it back for me to reload... she was amazed at this too... apparently spoon fed babies do not reach this milestone for a good many months more!!!
Obviously they (CMHN's) are noticing a huge difference between the babies that are self feeding to those that are being spoon feed -
Another fantastic reason for us to be continuing on the journery - well done to us all :cheer:
ETA - MJ still shovels things in with her fists at times, it takes a while for them to figure out how to release the food... its pretty normal at 7 months, and 8 and 9 and 10 for that matter!
Bec that sounds normal to me hun :) She will learn.
one thing for sure i have noticed....Jacks poo is more formed..if you get what i mean?? and he stinks!!!! sorry girls TMI i know..but hey we all have to deal with our bubbas right??
