We have slowed down a bit as DS had been sleeping less on solids. He will eat if we are eating but only because he screams otherwise... I often wonder if I hadn't offered him food how long it would have taken for him to show interest himself.
Bek - as SJ said, beware of the MESS! But it is so much fun, and it is so very clear that the bubs enjoy it.

DD has been on solids for a couple months now. She loves pretty much anything that comes her way. We do a mixture of BLS and puree stuff. Last night we have her an assortment of vegies and she loves to smear them on the tray.
I agree Ash, it is so much fun. Vegemite sandwiches are great too, DD gets them everywhere and does manage to swallow most of what I give her.
Thats basically what we do, kinda of depends what are eating.:
Realised yesterday he doesnt actually like avocado much on its own, but loves it on bread or toast.
I'm thinking of buying a lamb cutlet for him to munch on because ive seen pictures of QM's Punky and i think thats definitely the kind of thing alex would enjoy!
Ash - Yeah, she loved that cutlet... DP was eating them infront of her & she cracked it until he gave her one, I think it was the first real meat she's had, she chewed it with gusto for ages then started to bash her car with it lol, so Daddy took it off her (too eagerly if you ask me :lol:) & you should have seen her face when he bit the rest!! She couldn't believe he ate her lamb cutlet lol.

Yum, nutella, havent had that for years... although we have safeway select belgium chocolate spread that we used on on pancakes ages ago -.. hum might have to try that.

We gave DS a few tries of some foods on teh weekend. Just for a taste. He loves oranges! He also (accidentally I think) ate some banana. What I mean is he broke off a bit in his mouth, tried to spit it out but evidently swallowed some bits. I know cause.... I found them in his nappy this morning (i know, ewwwww, what am I doing going through his poos..?, but I don't see what else it could be.) Anyway, is that normal? or a sign that he's not ready yet, since it was (i guess) not digested? Or was that just cause he didn't chew...?
Anyway, he's very interested in trying things in his mouth, but after the weekend I'm not sure he's really ready to eat just yet, so will probably leave it for a couple more weeks and see.
Oh, and SJ I used your hommus recipe at a bbq on the weekend. it was a big hit - thanks!

it's been awhile & I have some news but no time for that, just wanted to answer Marcellus.
Banana was one of the first foods we gave DS & I found the same thing. When they get a 'chunk' in his mouth he wasn't used to the weight so would try to spit it out, most of it was spat out but I also found some in his poos. I also regularly give DS brocoli & zuchini & still find the brocoli bits & zuchini skin in his poos. The thing is they aren't getting a lot in & it more about them picking up the food, getting it into their mouths & guming it. For instance we might give DS 1/4 banana but never expect him to eat all of it or anything. When DS was your boys age I was only give himing something once a day but that would be bits of a few different things or just the one thing. If he didn't want it he wouldn't be eating it. JMO HTH
I agree with njd, if he didnt want it it would come out... MJ will spit out what ever she doesnt want and yeah most of it comes out in the poo's...
I dont think that its weird that your looking either, MJ is in cloth so i have to clean the poo of the nappies as soon as they come off, so i always am looking. Also im a nurse so these things matter to me :rolleyes: sad i know
Broccoli was my biggest clue that she was actually consuming, its hard to miss the green bits!
I dont think that its is that they are not ready to digest yet, its just new and an adaption for the body... not that i study my poo, but we dont break things down entirely either

Does everyone feed at the same time each day?
Sometimes if i am rushed, she misses a meal, she is not bothered by it, but i feel a it bad.... Maybe i should prepare in advance.
She doesnt eat dinner with us as she is usually in bed, but if we eat early she will sit up with us and be offered food again, i tend to give her dinner at 4.30ish.
AH, well that makes sense. I'm not sure that he really wanted to eat it - he had a really weird look on his face and tried to spit it out - but then again that's probably just cause he'd never had a lump like that in his mouth before.
In cloth here too, so that's my excuse for looking at his poos. ;)

hmmm reading all your posts about your babies gumming foods and spitting them out has me worried.. cause ds never spits anything out, even if he has too much in his mouth, he will just swallow it... when i first tried him on finger foods he was choking all the time, he is getting better at it now but i still have to keep the finger foods small (like sandwiches cut to the size of his fingers).. is this normal? he doesn't have any teeth yet either :(
I agree that babies cannot break down a lot of foods. I find carrot doesnt digest too greatly in DD's tummy. I am sure if they dont want it, they will spit it.
If time doesnt permit and Amber misses a meal it is no real issue here too. Like QM has said Food is fun until they are 1!

I'm new to this thread and a little clueless when it comes to solids! Ds is so interested in everything I eat,if I've got it, he wants it!
He will only feed himself solids but always cries when he drops it because it's too slippery.Things like Avocado and Banana just slide right out of his hands.
What would you suggest that I try that he can hold but is not too slippery?The only thing I can think of is bread but I don't want to be giving it to him all the time.

Hi all. I know a few of you, but hi to the rest too.
Thought I would join in as I started DS on BLS at just over 5 months.
We usually cut bread into quaters. One of his faves is Avocado on bread. He has peanut butter & vegemite as well. I actually put Sardines on his bread the other day & he didn't mind it!
He's also had prawns, banana, lasagne, pasta, & heaps of other things. Pretty much what ever I am having at the time.
I can't pick him up while I'm eating coz he will just grab a handful of my food & feed himself! If its a sandwich he'll just break a bit off! His hand-eyecoordination is amazing when it comes to food!
i have found that MJ prefers soy milk in her weetbix, i made some for DSS and gave her the left overs, she scoffed the lot... i think that it is more creamy than with water or cows milk...
she has been having pasta spirals lately - with nothing on them, and is quite enjoying that too.
Anyones bub tried raw onion??? my sister made some guacamole yesterday and mj had some and loved it, i realised that she was crunching something and it was the bit of onion, i fished some more out and she really liked it, i would have thought it was a taste that she wouldnt like as it seemed to be the one thing that she didnt like me having in the early days of bf and later stages of pg i hated it.
Skye, my sister told me that she read in the paper the other day that there has been a study that links early fish consumption with assisting ezcema symptoms... i will see if i can find a copy. DH LOVES sardines, i think the are gross, he has to eat them outside as i cant stand the smell... maybe he can feed them to MJ !
Raw onion......That's an interesting one, might give it a try!
