Did you always plan to shorten bubs name?

DD's name is Rachelle (pronounced Rachel though - blame my ex for the extra letters) which is routinely shortened to Rach or Rachie. Never ever ever to Chelle, Shell or Shelly. Not the sort of thing to go on a birth certificate though, plus I regularly use her full name including middle name and not just when she's in trouble as well.

This one, well his prospective first name is easily shortened and probably will be, but I like the shortened version. I have discarded other names because I dislike what it gets shortened to (Lachlann in particular springs to mind, love Lachlann, hate Lachie). Nicknames and shortened versions are something I think it's important to consider when naming a child, whether you can live with a particular shortening or not given the tendency of people to do so.

DD no, DS yes. We chose DS's nickname when he was born and announced that was it. DD we announced what she was NOT to be called and she gets everything else instead :D

We chose names with the twins that couldn't be shortened and this time our boys name can't be shortened either. DF wants it to be called Maddy if she's a girl, but if I do agree to Maddy, she will be Madeleine, just called Maddy. I too think Maddy is too informal for when she gets older.

we did the exact same thing as Olive. liked the shortened name, not the formal name so just ended up calling him the shortened version.
we've had mixed reactions to the name tbh, but it really does suit him.

We chose Annabelle because we liked how it sounded for now when she's a baby, and when she's older. We didn't consciously choose a nickname when we chose it, but we always call her Belley - seemed to fit when she was in my belly! I realise it's a name she might not like when she's older, and she can always ask to go by her full name, Anna or Belle.

This ^ We deliberately chose a name that couldnt be butchered, and yet still people are very determined it would seem, including their Godmother!! Drives me batty!

My son's name can't be shortened and he doesn't really have a nickname. I call my daughter a whole lot of names (stinky baby, poopy pants, Dinopig, missy moo, Lily the pink, Lillian pinkerton...), but I never shorten her name.

My kids both get there full names and not shortened!
DS2 both SIL shorten and it IRKS me no end as thats not there name!

I do have a friend who has shortened all 3 of her kids names and that is all they are known as.

I actually do wish I had thought more through the possible nicknames but when I chose my daughter's name (Imogen) it was because of the full name. She gets Immy from most people, I usually just call her Im if I don't call her Imogen these days; the nicknames have grown on me though.

I love the name Allegra for this baby but not really keen on Ally as a nickanme... maybe it will grow on me too!

With DD (Alyssa), I was very clear that it wasn't going to be shortened to Ally as I didn't like that name. So she is Lys, or Lyssa. DS (Bailey) has so far avoided a shortening, although I know my dad was joking about calling him BJ (middle name James) but I think he was trying to be funny because of the rude connatations (yes, he's still not grown up :rolleyes: )

We didn't choose either with shortening or not shortening in mind. My own first name is Samantha-Ann, and the -Ann was added as they didn't want it shortening to Sam, something to do with one of the Auntie's mentioning she used to have a dog called Sam. I was Sammy Jo until Uni, when I made the choice to be Sam.

mum never let my sisters or family ever shorten my name(elizabeth). it was only in school that i did.
in the last couple of years i now really only use my full name. i love my name and think it should be used. and it now sounds more "grown up" then liz lol

I can't remember conciously considering what names would be if they were shortened but as it happens the names we chose you don't really shorten.

DS1 is Aid@n and we often call him AA as this is how DS2 pronounces his name. It may or may not stick within the family but i imagine that'll be as far as it goes.
DS2 is Ch@arlie and on a few occasions i have been asked if it is short for Ch@rles, which it isn't for us.
DD is H@aper and i can't imagine shortening this in anyway but again she has a bit of a nick name (Barper) which is how DS2 pronounces her name.

So here at home we have 'other names' for the kids but not so much by other family or friends.

My DS's first and middle names were chosen so the initials could be used together as a nickname and that is what he's been called since birth except in formal circumstances.
So Cullen and Jett became CJ.
But when he's an adult Cullen will maybe suit better.

lol... I named my kids to be called their full name.... Joshua, I call Joshua (he hates that haha) and when he was little his aunty would always say Josh so I always when UA! haha... well actually we call him Smunchie rofl which he hates more... just a nickname which stuck from when he was like hmmmm really young, was munchkin... ummm then Oskar... he's pretty much just Oskar (or Ratbag) and then there's Nuggy.... yup ok... Elijah (do NOT call him Eli!! People take it on themselves to do that!! Some call him Lijy)... we call him Nugget/Nuggy/Nug lol.

So, anyway, nope I don't call them a name knowing that I'll call them by a nickname/shortened version etc.

We started with DD's nickname and worked backwards from there! :rofl: She is mainly known by her nickname except for in 'formal' situations, when we are introducing her to someone or if someone asks her name, then we use her 'proper' name.

We love nicknames so it's important to us when choosing a baby names that they can be easily shortened.

For DS1- I had loved the name Cameron since I was 13 years old for a few reasons with one being that i could nickname him Cam.

For DS2- I did have a list- though I think we were already set on his name but just wanted to have back ups just in case and they were ALL names that could be shortened. But of course we went with our initial favourite of Joshua will full intentions of calling him Josh [except when he is naughty of course :-) ].

I too still introduce my boys by their full name but don't mind if people shorten it (as long as Cameron doesn't get called Ronny....which a childcare carer does and I really hate it...grrr...she is not the regular carer though so its rare i hear it thank goodness).
