I really like it! And it has personal meaning for you. Go for it, I say.
I said yes, as both.
I do like the name, I wouldn't personally use it, but it's not for me ;) It's for you and only you can decide if you want to use it and where.
It did make me think of Lionel Richie, but I like him too... lol
I personally do not like it but if you do thats all that matters x x
I voted no, it's not a name that strikes me. However, a few of my friends have called their kids names I'm not fond of (ie. Marshall) but they very quickly grow on you and now I couldn't imagine them being called anything else.
The name has such a beautiful meaning for you so if you want to use that name then please use it. Don't let anyone else sway you otherwise xo
Not for me but probably because I went to school with a Lionel and he was a snotty nosed (literally!) horror of a child. Poor reason but it's always been so off-putting for me
I voted that I didn't like it - but I don't like Graeme either, and it's DS's middle name (it's my FIL's name). When names have a family or personal meaning, whether you like it or not sort of becomes irrelevant. I can't imagine DS without Graeme! I still probably wouldn't use it as a first name, but certainly a very meaningful middle name. Had I known the meaning of the name, I would have voted for it as a middle name :)
I was horrified when my friend was trying to talk her DH out of using Lindsey (his middle name and his Dad's name) as a middle name if they had a boy! I thought "what does it matter if you don't like it - it's really important to him!" They had a girl :)
i would use it as a middle name for sure since the name means alot but i dont like it at all for a 1st name, just reminds me of a very old person lol i cant imagine a energic 2 yr old being called lionel, n he would prob get li/lye for short which i dont like either :p
i say yes cause there a beautiful meaning behind it i have used my pops name as my DS2 middle name edward not alot of people liked it when i did a poll and asked but i used it anyway cause it had a meaning to me and thats all that matters and to be honest i am so glad i did go with my orginal idea because i couldnt imagine calling him anything else. i also plan on using my grandmothers names if i have a girl one day, i say go for it.
Thanks heaps everyone :) Will definitely use it as a middle name (if this bubby's even a boy lol) it would be nice cos Grandad still has good days at the moment where he is here IYKWIM and he'd know i have named bubby after him. Thanks again for your honesty. And to all those that mentioned Lionel Ritchie, that's ok i think he's pretty cool ;)
Ok i didn't want to start a new thread and take up space but was wondering if anyone had suggestions for first names to go with Lionel. Finding boys names really hard
_______ Lionel McM_____
DD's names are Lyla and Shay
Honestly I don't particularly like the name Lionel. But my son's middle name is Allan after his great grandfather which I'm sure isn't to everyone's taste :D so I think it's a fitting choice.
I'd probably go with something traditional as a first name to go with it such as Peter
I like:
Oscar Lionel McM
Edward Lionel McM
Xavier Lionel McM
Otis Lionel McM
I would say something that doesn't end in L. With a McM surname, you could go traditionally Scottish like Hamish (I had a friend at school whose little brother was Hamish McMillan - he was Geordy)
Hamish Lionel McM
Thomas Lionel McM
Brendan Lionel McM
Nicholas Lionel McM
I agree with something fairly traditional though :) Good luck!
WannabeMum - Wow of all the McM names you picked DP's haha that's quite a coincidence! Completely spun me out
Thanks ladies now to get DP to play the name game, he is quite angry cos the name he has wanted for a boy since DD1 was used by my sister  lol. So he's refusing to pick other names
i voted for no - but in saying that - if its a family name and you want to use it because its significant to you, i say use it!
the name we have picked for our daughter - alot of people are not fond of - but nuts to them!!
Jessey - you've got plenty of time, let him think about it. Oh, but my cousin was born about a month before my brother, and they have the same name - had the same surname at birth too! Never affected either of them - there are worse things than having the same name :) Good to know I'm psychic too :) Hamish and Geordy were both really nice guys (in primary school anyway - who knows what happens to us as we grow up!)
Ok so DP has 2 new names he likes, we like our kids names to be unable to be shortened so he has on his list Caleb and Owen but he likes Owen best. What do you ladies think? Will it be odd if we used Owen? That would mean all 3 of our kids would have 4 letter names(Lyla, Shay and Owen if this bub is a boy that is), is that weird?
Owen Lionel M c M i l l a n
