I dont understand how anyone can steal a name?
You dont own it, you choose it for your child.
Unless you are a wak-job, you choose it because of all the names you heard, that was the one you loved the most, the one you wanted to call your child for the rest of their life.
How can you begrudge someone else for wanting to do the same thing?
You cant help the name you love the most, it just happens.
There is no way I would give my child my second best name just out of fear aof what someone else thinks.
My child gets MY favorite name, and if that happens to be your favorite too, well then,
GOOD ON US :D

I might be a little annoyed, if like the OP said, I'd told someone the name, they said they didn't like it then used it anyway. But ultimately I don't believe anyone owns a name so therefore there's nothing to 'steal'. My family is also pretty close and I see a fair bit of some of my cousins, one of whom has a DS with a name I love and would not have hesitated in using if only DH had agreed. I have a number of friends with the same name as me (very popular in the '70's!) but I wouldnt not be friends with them because of that so I don't think even family connections should dictate your choice - if you like it then use it :)
