That's pretty funny: tryndeigh. :lol: Also agree with running the risk of becoming dated. Sometimes it works to be characteristic of a particular generation... I love lots of names from my grandmother's generation... but sometimes it doesn't. My poor DH really dislikes his name... it's definitely a product of the 60's.... but maybe for him it's worse because it rhymes with his sister... I struggle with that a bit.
Depending on the name, extra letters are the original spelling, maybe not the traditional spelling, but original nonetheless. For example, my two... Alexzander was the original medieval spelling of the name & from my research Alexander the great was likely to have the z in his name but over the years it was dropped. Juliette is the same, traditionally it was spelt like that but the spelling tended to change to Juliet over the years.
Random changes for no reason bother me though. Unusual names & regional spellings if they are for a reason are fine also IMO.
Maybe just a gentle reminder to be cautious of using specific names when citing examples of names you don't like or think are spelt in a silly way? ;) You never know who might have that name.

That is something we have deliberately avoided... we had a name we were considering for this baby until DD pointed out it rhymed perfectly with DS2. Promptly scrapped :D
I love different spellings, but the name still has to be simple iykwim.
I didn't change Bri's coz it looked right how it is. Bri/Bre - I liked Bri better, & anything else woulda been too long (Breeanna/Breannah atc)
Jesse I left as Jesse coz anything else woulda made it too girly. People think he's a girls when I say his name anyways.
I wanted Jaz to have her own name. Thats why I changed hers. Jazmyne instead of Jasmine. I wanted it to be unique for her, but not too uncommon iykwim.
I made this mistake with DD - thankfully it's just her middle name and it never comes up. The reason I did it is because we knew a little girl with the same name but reversed (ie DDs first name is her middle name and vice versa) so I didn't want them to think we'd copied their exact name! So silly now because we never see them but like I said, thankfully it's just her middle name so it's not an issue.
The boys name we have chosen this time has an alternative spelling and I am tempted to use it but don't want to regret it down the track so am sticking with the 'boring' spelling.
Maz: I really like Germanic names. My name is Austrian but Anglicised by my parents to make it easier to spell :( Waste of time... I always have to spell it anyhow. I wish they had kept to the traditional spelling.
I hope you weren't referring to me there, my comment was merely that the names had changed over the years and what is now the traditional spelling isn't necessarily the original spelling.:
No Sarah :) .. I just noticed that there were a couple earlier in the thread... someone said they didn't like names like Jane mucked around with and I couldn't help notice a member has a DD with the name Jane but a different spelling in their signature... and Mayson. Not that these examples were that bad... I just don't want it to escalate IYKWIM. I got into trouble for saying in a thread that I didn't like a name a few weeks ago and regret it because it hurt another members feelings... that's all. Personally it wouldn't bother me much to see mine or my children's names used as examples of bad names or spellings but it might bother others i guess.... ETA: I don't want to play Mod though LOL you can over-rule my suggestion!!! hehe
Sarah, Alexander the Great probably spelt his name like this Ἀλέξανδρος (sowwy- couldn't resist being a smart-arse :p )
Maz, I'm cool with non-Anglicanised spelling and traditional names from other cultures (obviously, my boys names aren't exactly traditional English handles) it's the making up a whole new spelling that bugs me. If you had decided to use William not Wilhelm and spelt it Whylyahm then my eyebrow might have popped.

I kinda sit on the fence with unusual spelling. I sometimes prefer the unusual speeling and often prefer the traditional. I think it becomes interesting though when the traditional spelling of something is suddenly unusual because the new way of spelling it has become so common. Like Michaela (traditional) and Mikayla (modern) - which incidently happen to be the girls name we are considering, we are undecided as to which spelling we prefer.
Ummmmm I too dont think I should comment here seeing the names I have given the winkies ;)... But hey we decided to given them theses names as we have such a commen last name...
No one can ever spell my name or that of my sisters :rolleyes: but once again as we had a very commen last name my Dad told mum that no DD of his is going to have a plain name...
I like different names even if I cant spell them or even know how to pronouce them...
But adding a load of letter to a " normal " name seems a little silly if you want your child to have a different name then give them one, dont have a " normal" name with a load of letters ... Like the great Kath and kim with little Ebbannniiiieee Raaaaiiiiyyyy :lol:
I think its sad when poor kids are lumped with name that are after famous people, in my sisters daycare centre there is a Hanna Montana.... she will never live that one down..

I also think its the reason we ALL have to spell out names no matter how traditional they are. So many names have been messed with you never know how its supposed to be spelt!
I have chosen four very "ordinary" names for my kids, LOL, no for any particular reason, that's just how it turned out, LOL. We have Ashleigh Megan, Sarah Jean, Mitchell John and Jack David. I suppose the only different spelling one is my DD Ashleigh instead of Ashley, at the time there was a lot of Ashley's around...but it was more common for boys..so I girled it up a bit with the "eigh".
I think my name is pretty easy to spell, but you'd be amazed how many variations I get :rolleyes: And also my name was traditionally supposed to be pronounced "Mar-Lay-Na" (the proper German pronunciation) but I think over the years my parents got sick of correcting everyone and I ended up just plain old "Mar-Leen". LOL.
Oh, and my middle name is Dorette. :rofl:
I adore unusual names, but also don;t really like it when people drastically change the spelling of a plain name just to make it unusual (to where it is barely recognisable):rolleyes:...might as well pick a unique name in the first place.
