In this instance I don't see any difference between judging someone and stating your opinion. If you state your opinion that a name someone has chosen for their children is ridiculous you are judging them.

I think we are saying poor kid, not judging the child - but that if you have a strange name, you will just struggle with that - spelling it, explaining to people, etc. I think little dynamite will have many years of questioning and explaining ahead of him and 'poor kid' doesn't really sum up how painful it might just be for him.
I had a strange name for about 15 years before it suddenly caught on and became insanely popular.
I had no problems with having a 'strange' name, no problems with learning to spell it or spelling it for people, no problems with explaining it and not one of my peers thought it strange because they were children and just accepted it - same as I accepted the names that I have in my adulthood come to realise are very uncommon.
Not only did I not struggle with my name I was quite fond of it.
One person's strange name is another person's ordinary name. The most popular name in the world is Muhamed (and its variations) yet only one member of this forum that I know of has a Muhamed.
My name is strange, common in my language spoken at home but strange to everyone else.
When people first meet me they always ask how to pronounce it and oh no one could pronounce my last name.
Growing up I was always teased as it rhymes with like about 1000 words in english and i always wanted to change my name to something more common.
Luckily I didn't because all grown up now, I like having a "unique" (rather than strange) name.
i would rather my children be the only one in their class/school/state/country then one of 5 in the class 50 in the school 2000+....
you may think my childrens names are parculiar but i hope they never come across you that would say oh poor you your parents are mean.... i will teach my children that their names are important and beautiful and no other persons opinion matter because it is as individual as they are!
you dont have to live with those "weird" names.. so you should not need to comment
i love un usual names! :)
i have a little boy Oscar who is 1week old tomorrow and i have had mixed opinions about his name i cant possibly count the amount of times people have reminded me about Oscar the grouch i feel like saying HELLO were in 2009 here!
my brothers name is Storm, i think it suits him his 19 and never been bashed up or bullied.
one of my girlfriends sisters has 2 little boys called Jedski and Lockley.
i think everyone fits and makes there name special.
:)
I think Oscar is a really nice name, and how rude calling him Oscar the grouch!
See i think Storm is nice, and your girlfriends sisters kids names are yes different but i like them :)
Its names like Sparrow James Midnight, if it was just Sparrow James then i wouldnt have said anything but Midnight is silly.
And as for West- Dynamite that is just plain silly. If it was West and a some what common name then it wouldnt be silly.
But hey thats MY opinion.
well you see funnily enough i do also like the name sparrow james.
i think it would of been alot cuter on a girl, but as you said thats MY opinion.
i guess when you have the money and lifestyle those children are going to have i guess it doesnt really matter what your name is!
i also think Ashlee Simpsons son Bronx is super cute. not to fussed on the middle name but love Bronx.
a family member of my DPs just had a little girl and named her Ellazay.
so i think "un usual" are going to start popping up all over the joint!
I like Bronx. I want to call my son Ayrton Stephen. I had my DP's cousins wife say it was unusual...
if i have another baby - way way in the future haha
i want to name him Cruz, not because victoria beckham did or bec hewitt
i just think it cute:)
Haha. Yeah Cruz is cute :)
I have to be careful in selecting kids names as i have the last name 'Babb' to work with....
I want to call my girl Lily Grace or Summer Naomi.
i Loveee summer :)
for girls i have Indigo Paige or Ayah Christabel
They are gorgeous names! Especially Indigo Paige :)
As soon as you get into names of course people will judge as we all have a preference. Some people are traditional some not, some people like exotic others not. If we are so worried about judgment lets just shut this thread down now because as soon as some says 'I don't like...' it's a judgment. And to put it out there as a teacher I have seen some strange names and yes I do think 'Poor kid' I say this as truth because I have seen kids struggle to get people to spell their names correctly time and time again and I regularly see kids teased over 'unconventional' names and I see them cry and lie about their names to hide it too. Just because we like does not mean we should use it because at the end of the day we are not the individual who has to live with it.
And if you don't like my judgment I have no problem with that because your allowed to have your opinion too and I support you right to it :D.
the folks that lived next door to us here had a boy named Style, I thought it was a bit weird but it actually ended up growing on me.
I guess I shouldn't have started this thread -as I was being judgemental...... does expressing an opinion on something always have to be deemed as judgemental?
I think it depends on the language you use. Most words in English have fairly specific connotations. Unique and unusual have differant connotations than wierd or strange. Saying you pity someone for their name implies that you think there is something wrong with it.
How would you feel if you came onto BB and found someone saying that you felt sorry for children named XYZ and you had named your child XYZ?
I don't think that using some tact should be a big ask.
