Yep, I hated the nickname Jim for my DS1. Skip forward a few years and I began calling him Jim. Now he's older he only gets called by his full name and tells people he prefers that.

I did. My DD is Josie but I hate the name Joe/Jo for a girl. No one calls her Jo thank God although funny enough she gets Josephine a lot although that's the long version which I didn't name her anyway.
Depends on the name. But I did. We don't like Emmi. We quite often have to correct people when they call DD that.
There were a couple of names I liked for DD2 that I didn't even consider as I hate their shortened versions.
I would still use it. I don't like Ellie, as an example...
My younger son has the shortened name of a lengthened name (family name) that I would never normally call a child. His first name is E.dward. He doesn't answer to it. In fact, until he was about six, he didn't know it was his name! He gets called N.eD.
DS is Wi!!iam and I absolutely hate Billy & Willy wtih a passion. So if anyone calls him either of those names I politely ask them not to and say we call him Wi!!iam or Will.
I'm like liviam. I always use full name, prefer it, but don't mind will or Liam. But hate other ones like willy or bill, eurgh.
No. I didn't use a name for DS2 because I didn't want/like it shortened. It was used as his middle name instead.
Good luck with names.
xx
I would use the full name if I liked it & just tell people that the name is NOT the shortened name. For years I hated people calling me Fi. To me it sounded like a poodle name "FiFi". But I can't escape it & have given up telling people not to call me that. Its weird, as a kid not many people did it but as an adult every other person (especially online) calls me Fi. I much prefer Efjay or FJ (which started here as my username use to be FionaJill) But yeah, I've accepted that Fi isn't all bad & just go with it now.
Awesome thanks guys! I think we have a name in that case!
DS2 name is shorterned by both my SIL's, I do not like it being shortened as that is not his name and probably because 1 has annoyed me a lot!!! LOL
No, I wouldn't name my child a name I didn't like the shortened version of, even if I loved the name.
We chose names that really can't be shortened. I'm considering a name that's usually the shortened form of a family name if this one is another DD, so there'd be no shortening of that either.
But then, I'm kinda out of ideas this time for a girl!
People shorten DD to the first two letters of her name. I correct them once. Never had them do it a second time. She now corrects them by saying "no, my name is ..." And gives all four names!
I hate the shortened version of her name, but love her name so used it :)
No I wouldn't. I think it would be setting yourself up for failure.
Just my opinion.
Particularly as the child might decide (in rebellion, or in all honesty) that they really like that nickname.
I am the opposite I like Tilly hate Matilda
But can't name bub Tilly as it won't go with surname.
My eldest J emima
Gets Jem and Mima (from littler people)
We called her Jem from birth too like our precious Jem (gem)
I can not stand it if people call her Jemma as that is a totally different name and I purposely did not name her that!!
My youngest has a hyphenated name and her daddy and sister call her the first name and I call her the second name and we sometimes call her the full name.
If other people shorten it to just the first name I correct for a while so they don't think that's her name.
