Haha! Hilarious!
What foods in particular?!
I'll often just tell DS1 that it's yummy food and to try it. At the end of the meal I'll ask him if he likes it and tell him what it is then. I do the same with DH. I wanted to try kanga bangers but DH wouldn't entertain the thought, so I just cooked sausages and at the end he asked what kind of meat it was so I told him.
I will say "it's a steak" or "a fillet" or "stir fry" or "pasta sauce" so I'm not lying to him. (them)
DS went thorugh a stage that everything was "chicken"... and it didnt matter how many times we tol dhim it was steak or whatever he would be adament it was chicken and he would get quite upset if we called it anythign else!! So it was all chicken!!!! Now he is getting a bit more open minded and will accept that there are different things out there besides chicken!!
We have a huge problem with vegies, I have tried the "they will make you big and strong!!!" "they are really yummy" and I have sadly resorted to "If you dont eat your vegies you will get sick and you may be dead" This got him to eat them once, but it didnt work again after that :(
I don't think we've ever had to do that with DD - she'll give everything a go - and if she doesn't like something, i assume she REALLY doesn't like it - she's just not a fussy kid!
my bro's kids have had to be told "creative" versions of the truth. one refused to try something because it had "orange potato" in it. she'd eaten it at least 10 times before, and LOVED it - but she seen me peeling sweet potato, and decided it would be yuk and refused. so the next time we had it, i told her it was all carrot - and she loved it again!
my bro's son was a shocker for eating anything that wasn't the most basic of basic vegies - spud, carrot, peas, corn. when i make spag, i put a whole lot more veg in than that - during winter, i add swede, turnip, parsnip etc - so when he was watching me cook (he didn't see me peeling stuff) i told him it had lots of little bits of spud - and he scoffed it. when he seen me peeling turnip and swede to make a soup later the same day, he said it was yuk and wouldn't eat it EVER.
sometimes you need to disguise the truth or embellish a little just to get kids to eat. i wouldn't outright lie and say beef was chicken - there is no point IMO, but i think sometimes it helps to get extra food into fussier kids
Yep I do it. Tis that or DD would eat nothing!
I just tell her it is pasta sauce, without going into detail of what is in it.
Or o ad veggies to baked beans, and as she doesn't question it, I don't tell her.
i don't do it - but i'm not sure whether DS is still a bit young for that tactic. at the moment, i pretty much just give him whatever we're having & if he doesn't eat it, he doesn't eat it. there are lots of foods that i didn't like till i was older & i don't want to force the issue. that said, he is only 26 months so no idea if that's a bit young? :dunno:
my mum only lied to me once - tried to tell me that rabbit was 'underground chicken'. i didn't believe her. mum also had a friend who told her son that liver was fillet steak. that was when he was still about 11. boy was that kid in for a surprise!!
I don't, but I sometimes will say 'it's like chicken', or, 'it tastes like sausage' which can be stretching the truth a bit at times.
I guess I do this, in a way.
DS is not fussy, but is with veg. So I generally disguise and hide them.
If he asks what's in his dinner, I'll say, 'just chicken, and rice and curry sauce' for instance, but I don't tell him I peeled and grated a zucchini into it that he just can't see, or he just wouldn't eat it, for the sheer fact it contains a vegetable.
I hide stuff and dont volunteer the info.
If I grate 10 veges into some mince and add some tomato paste, it is spaghetti.
Its a need to know kind of thing ;)
We do especially with DD2, she is a shocking eater, even with lying its hard to get her to eat.
DD1 we tell little fibs, like if there is tomato it has to be the small ones or mushrooms have to be the magic fairy small ones.
In our house we have eaten sea chicken, wooly chicken and grazing chicken.
We've also eaten cabbages grown by fairies.
most of the time i just say its yummy eat it lol but he wouldnt eat custard today
