.... i have been lovingly known to say to very few people that my DD looked like a *** funny humoured little man with a tupee on his head ***, lol
(to paint the picture, my DD had a full little face with dark beady eyes and very crinkly hands/fingers and a ton of dark hair)

We thought DD the loveliest little thing ever to be born of course and I proudly sent out thank you cards with a photo of her aged around 4 weeks. I thought it such a cute photo because she actually had a little smile.
BIL unkindly said "You could have chosen a better picture, surely you have one, she doesnt look all that nice in it" and I was shocked! I hadn't considered anyone could think her *unpretty*.
I look back now at that picture and think "Yep, not the best look ever." She was still a little cross-eyed and so scrawny, poor thing, plus a little pimply. I just never noticed it at the time. She also looked EXACTLY like DH who has a huge nose. (thankfully it has now changed to my nose and actually fits her face) She was never a fat baby, always thin so no cute rolls, and all her hair fell out plus she has kind of sticky-out ears too but we always thought her adorable and of course still do! Now she has beautiful clear blue eyes with the longest dark lashes ever, lovely skin and golden hair with the hint of a dimple in her cheek.

Hehe yep, DS was a really slow weight gainer so for about the first 3 months he was very skinny and wrinkly and looked like a little old man...then about 4 months he chubbed up and looked so cute! The difference was amazing. I look back on the photos and think wow he really was soooo skinny when at the time I knew he was tiny just not that tiny!

i was told most babies were born, with heads disproportionately bigger to their bodies, and that explained to me, why many tiny bubs remind me of very cute turtles. Turtles bobbing up and down, cos they haven't mastered neck control just yet.
bilby was a very odd looking bub for a LONG time due to very little hair mainly.
she looks pretty girly now (long fine hair that goes into long curls) but until the length happened, i got boy comments all the time. She had cradle cap for ages, so she's never grown a fringe and there are still disproportionately short bits of hair at the front of her scalp.
but my mummy googles were firmly on too, i had waited five years to meet her and i was so amazed she actually survived labour, i wasn't really fussed that much about her looks. She looks nothing like me, i think she's lovely, but then i would say that! i'm her mummy!
i remember feeling weird in hospital, because of the number of people that told me, with worried looks on their faces, "you've had a big baby". she arrived at 3.79kg. Since then, i've been told that big babies are 4.5kg and up. Probably what they really meant was "3.79kg is big considering you're only 5ft2" but at the time i felt like i was being scolded, or judged for having a big baby - when i didn't even know what constituted a big baby. and i kept thinking "what does it matter, she's alive, THAT"S what matters". So i went home thinking, she'll be straight into 00's and small nappies then. but no, she needed the 0000 and the nb sized nappies.
easy to confuse a first time mum i guess.
with a nb, i was so entranced by her facial expressions, the balinese dance way she used her fingers so expressively, the kicking of those gorgeous little toes, the rosebud lips, the shape her lips were after a breastfeed, the cute suckling noises, her sleeping noises - etc etc. i felt in love with all these individual things, was so in awe that she was here, alive, with me. Love hormones were there in spades.
Maybe other people see your child more objectively, they don't have the love hormones going on, they don't stare at every aspect of your baby for the amount of time that you do, as the mum.

DD was born at 31 wks - and had a real 'alien' appearance to her. There are pics I just couldn't bear anyone other than DH to see. By 6 wks she looked so small and cute she got nicknamed 'the pixie' ;).
DS was just darn cute from the get go though :D.

I am the same! I look at photos and think that DD1 looked like a little hairy monkey - at the time she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen
My mum had a photo of me at 5 months in a frame for years and it was the ugliest photo ever - I show people the photo now and they are in hysterics as I look like the charcter Andy from Little Britain! Anyway one day she looked at it and thought "what was I thinking? that is the ugliest photo ever" and took it down. For years she thought it was gorgeous and then one day the mummy goggles came off. So it does happen to a lot of people I think!

DH and I realised that we were very biased when DS was born - we thought he was beautiful but looking back on photos...
He wasn't ulgy, he was just an average newborn. Then he got a massive receding hairline. We had a pic of him with a huge smile that we thought was the best photo ever, but when I showed it to a friend she laughed and said he looked like a little old man - I was sooo offended. Now I see she was right lol.
DD wasn't the best looking newborn, she has massive puffy cheeks that took a couple of weeks to look normal. But of course I think they are both adorable now.

When V was handed to me I thought "Oh I have one of those babies ppl will say is cute but isnt" but now her head isnt so squished I think she is cute as...maybe mummy goggles hmmm.....

LOL, nattyfred, I was sooo besotted by my little man, but looking at his birth pictures, my goodness, looking back, he was soo squashed and bruised (I have pics on Facebook if anyone wasnts to see). Not pretty at all, then a week or so later he looked all nice and chubby newborn-ish, then a few weeks later he lost half his hair and looked like Fryer Tuck! It's so funny to see in hindsight!

I wont be able to comment about mine for another 7ish months. But the SIL i dont like had gorgeous babies, all hers were good looking bubs but they all looked identical and they still all are except for the last one he looks different and because iv only seen him once in person i didnt think he was good looking but shhh dont tell my SIL . My other SIL while her girls are gorgeous now they werent so much when they were born, this will sound so mean but her first looked like one of the gremlins but now she has the biggest blue eyes and she sure will be a heart breaker!!!
