I weighed P at my parents yesterday as they have digital scales and I could get a good reading. 5.2kg fully clothed and BBH, so about 5kg bare weigh...
I was really hoping he had put on some weight because yet again the in-laws are saying we need to feed him more, that he isn't putting on enough weight, hands in mouth means he needs food blah blah blah. Poor DH had to defend our choices on solids and explain that he is feeding every 2hours, having both sides and sleeping and developing as he should
No doubt if he was chubby and weighing in more then we would be over-feeding him
This is really starting to pull me down, even though I know we are doing everything right!

You don't have to defend your choices - he's your baby and it's your decision.
-
cant say it better than marcellus just did hun.
if hes not a chubby bub then hes not a chubby bub.
-
Nice name change Clare :)
Yeah I know he is just a skinny bub, just can't help but wonder... it means he has put on just under 2kgs from birth
Okay, so I checked the WHO growth charts, and he is WAY below the bottom curve for weight, and just below for height. Should I get him checked over by a GP and maybe get a referral to a pediatrician? He dropped to the bottom curve just after birth but had stayed on it

Just sending you some  as have been there and know how awful and stressful it can be. Though I know its not easy try not to listen to them from everything you've said your baby is fine just a slight lean build.
My little man is the same he is almost 14 months old now and probably only weighs just over 9kg. Little stick insect :D. I would still prefer him to be heavier (little bit of fat for if he gets sick and loses some weight) but he isn't and I have just to learn to live with it - though its still not easy!
I started a slow weaning process at about 9 months (when he become absolutly impossible to BF when out) and his weight gain didn't change when he moved to formula nor when he started solids. He has stayed consistently on his line and that is where I guess he will always be. I went through hell when he was a baby and only doing small weight gains thinking I wasn't doing the right thing by him by breast feeding and that it would all be better if I moved him to formula way earlier. I am SO glad now that I didn't as he would have still only put on the same amount of weight but I would haven't had the joy of breast feeding for all those months.
I remember also being told at one of the weigh ins I did that you've also go to look at other growth so say if he's grown longer in a month then he mightn't have put on any weight. The good MCNs will look at the health of the baby and not be concerned with nnumbers on their own. Have you a good supportive GP or MCN in your area that you can go to? Maybe ask the question here if any of the girls know one. I would recommend mine but am in Northern Beaches so don't know if that is any use to you.

If you're worrying then by all means go see a doctor. There's a lot more to a baby's well being than weight - you have to look at the whole picture, but you're his mum and know him best.

First of all, if he wasnt getting what he needed he would be having more. IL's sometimes need to butt out.
My eldest son was born @ 37 weeks 1 day in 06, so he was early but he took after his father and 30mins after he was born was having a bottle, Where as my youngest who was may of 09 was born 40 weeks 4 days and is not as heavy or physically as big as my eldest as he takes after me.
I think you have no reason to worry he sounds like he is doing awesome, every child is different some eat like a horse and gain no weight

How did it go with the MCHN today UA?
-
and the result is - 5.5kg!! 500g in 5days just to make sure it was a good weigh in cheeky monkey
Still just under the curve, but the CHN wasn't concerned by his weight really because he is still growing to his own curve, and it is still on the up. His head circumference and height are still on track as well so no disproportion. She was also really impressed with his development, his interaction and abilities.
She has said we can get a referral to a pediatrician if we want, but she doesn't feel there is any need for it. She has suggested that we slowly start to introduce solids and we will see how he goes from there. I know that it isn't a guarantee for him to start putting on weight, but it will be fun :) We will also be going with BLS which she was happy to support and give information on.
As all you lovely ladies have said, he is a happy little boy and has a mum who has his best interest at heart. Her 'assessment' of him has been an additional pat on the back for me and boost in my confidence as a mother, when the IL's are constantly planting a seed of doubt. As she told me today, 50years ago P's build would have been the 'normal'.

Yay!
Good stuff mum
-
Just caught up on all of this! It sounds like you are both doing awesomely!!
-
Thanks! It really has been a confidence booster that I have needed :)
He was also quite happy to sit there and 'talk' to her as she was talking about food, nodding and agreeing with her

Yahoo!! WTG P!!!
Oh Belle that's just fantastic babe. I'm so pleased for you.
-
Thanks Kim!! Thank you for your support the other night too
He does look good though, nothing to be worried about really...
-
phew i finally made it back onto bb! belle that is FANTASTIC news hun , tell the ILs to butt out, the health care proffesionals say he is fine!!
oh and my MIL (midwife) said a lot of the charts for "normal" growth are based on FF babies anyway and mostly its different for BF bubs.
-
You're welcome hun.
Angelpants is right too. When I had Darcy she was low on the charts, but they were the same charts health professionals had used when I was a baby. By the time I had Nate, even though he was pretty much weight for weight the same as Darcy he was off the bottom of the charts....turns out they've adapted them for all the FF bubs who were off the chart at the other end :wall:

I just found this thread now and glad to read your later posts UntoldAngel where you are feeling better about things.
I just wanted to say I very much understand your worry about lack of weight gains. I was so stressed out about my DD for such a long time. She was born at 40 weeks weighing 4kgs, but from there just didn't put on weight. I watched her go from chubby to skinny. She went from the top of the chart for weight to below the 3rd percentile. I stressed about my BM and whether I had enough of a supply. I was lucky to have a supportive MCHN who looked at the whole picture. But eventually the worry was too much and I saw a paediatrician who tried to convince me to give up BF at five months. I didn't give up BF but did add a formula top up, which made no difference. When my DD was about 11 months I saw a second paediatrician who was so much better. He ran heaps of tests on her and they came back showing she was/is a perfectly healthy girl. It really relieved my worry. I did end up weaning around 11 months though, due to the fact that I needed to start some medication. And I gave her formula for a month. It made no difference. Solids have made no difference. In fact she eats so much food that people comment on how much she eats! After the second paediatrician visit I finally accepted that she is a very happy, healthy girl who is just meant to be skinny. Sounds like your DS is doing really well.

i had the op****et problem with my first son....He was born @ 37weeks and weight 7lbs 14 and has always been a big boy and eats like its going outta fashion, i was always told to cut down his feeds and not to give him alot of this and that and at his 3 and half yr old up they said i should keep an eye on his weight and they are looking for signs of him becoming obse....he is not even 4.....ive just learnt that he is a strong boy who is gentle cuddly and sweet.
