To those with boys

My DS 3 is obsessed by Dora at the moment.
He loves his toy kitchen and pretends to bake me cupcakes and makes me cups of tea.
Whenever we go to a friends house he will go straight for the doll pram, and push around all the cabbage patch kids, then put them to bed, he also loves zhuzhu pets, and putting together the race track (which is pink/purple/white)
DP was horrified when I suggested getting him his own doll and pusher, so I just gave him my old cabbage patch dolls to play with.
Oh he also loves playing wth my make up and perfume!

I have to wonder...how often is it the dads who are iffy about giving their son a doll? My DH I think couldn't care less and agrees that if DS wants one he can have one. But it seems there's a few out there who have a bit of a hang up about boys playing with "girly" toys

CK~ too true! I get so annoyed with DP's attitude towards that kind of thing.

lol, funny story...when I was little my parents had friends who the male of the couple was a very tough, butch, police officer. the couple had 2 boys..one a bit younger than me.
Whenever they would come over the one closest to my age would ransack my bedroom for my...barbies! he loved them! would sit there and prattle on, play pretend etc..all day! His father was disgusted :(
My parents always joked about buying him one for his birthday but the Father would have had a freak out! Mum started babysitting for them on a regular basis, she would always take a bag with barbies in it just for the boys to play with! (my babrbies were quite neglected by me, I wanted transformers!!)

I generally only know of men having an issue with this- is it an insecurity with their own sexuality or uncertainty about how to define their gender identity? The role of "men" seems to be shifting a lot in the past couple of generations and I guess this can make men unsure of themselves?

My H is very supportive of our boys playing with everything and wearing necklaces and whatever else but I have come across other father's who don't like boys playing "girls" things. At a preschool I worked at we had a boy who loved wearing fairy dresses, and he was obsessed with barbie and all things pink. One day another father made some snide comment in the little boy's earshot to try and humiliate him. It was awful and I was shocked a parent would do that to another child.

Ds plays with a pram and dolls, his favourite movie up until recently was Thumbelina and he loves to dance especially tap he copies his sisters. But he is obsessed with cars, and toys that he can move and take apart much more than the girls. They like make believe whereas he likes to make things go.

Yep! DS2 had dolls and pram teddys ect ect his dad hated it but hey at the time he wasnt even 5yrs old. I put it down to why not men have babies i was nurturing his nurturing side. He played with trucks ect too so whats the harm

My DS plays with dolls, but mostly by throwing them around, or hiding them from his sister.

There are no restrictions on what either of my children a girl and a boy play with. However, with out a doubt my DD plays with traditional girls toys and my DS plays with traditional boys toys. They do occasionally play with all toys, but not in the same way. Until I had one of each I thought that it was more cultural that there were boys and girls toys. After, I now realized that, my two at least, are just wired differently.
