hi
I was lucky and DS doesn't have any cc on his head. he does have a little on his eyebrows though, and sorbolene works well.
I have been told that the skin has to actually come off for moisturisers to work on the scalp, and prevent it from returning. So I guess you need to find the product that is best compatible with your bub, that will soften the CC so it becomes loose and washes off in bath, then keep the new skin moisturised and dry too.
Sometimes babies get CC from too much moisture.
Rub almond oil into bubs scalp overnight. Pick off the scale in the morning and wash.
Stimulating the scalp also helps to rectify the problem. Increasing the blood flow by light brushing or massage is the best cure.
I wash Lachlans head with organic baby shampoo (BAIA) everyday and it seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping it away.
I just used warm water and then rubbed DS's head with a towel every night. It got rid of the worst of it - but then, he's a hairy beast of a boy and most of it was covered up.
The only reason I wanted rid of it was to stop the world and his wife telling me how to get rid of it! I was fine with it staying, DS was fine with it, why tell me how to get rid of it? Do I send psychic "tell me how to parent please!" signals?
we used olive oil, sorbolene and the Gaia bath oil on Jackson's cc and then read about Moogoo in another thread - ordered some straight away and within 2 days of applying it twice a day Jackson cc was gone - he has got a bit back on his eyebrows which has gone using the Moogoo as well - if anyone in Sydney wants some pm me you can share my jar because we have a heap of it left
its really nice as a hand cream as well

I was the same Ryn.
DS had a lot of cradle cap, his head resembled a cracked, dried up riverbed, but it didn't bother him, it wasn't itchy etc, so I left it alone. My mother was not amused, and started trying every remedy she could think of, without consulting me at all, to get rid of it.
We tried everything but it went on for months. then in the end when it finally went, it all happened within about 24 hours, for a full head of cradle cap to none.
Moving this to Baby & Toddler General Discussion.
Hello,
Try a little olive oil on the scalp and brush gently in circular motions with a soft baby brush - then wash hair as normal.
This always worked on my babies. Stay away from sorbolene though as it is derived from petrochemicals and I wouldn't put it anywhere on my baby.
Hope this helps!
Jules
anyone have any tips for dealing w cradle cap?DS has a full head of hair which seems to make it even more difficult - at the moment he has a little behind his ears and a fair biton his hairline.

Pregpan, Lindsay had a heap of hair too and it made it really hard to get to the cradle cap. Perseverance is the key to beating it. I used either baby oil or olive oil on him (whichever I had handy at the time) and would put in on his scalp about 1hr before his bath, then just before his bath, gently comb it off with a fine tooth comb. You can use sorbolene, bepanthen cream, or Tracey has suggested a paste made of bicarb soda and water, but I found that using sorbolene on Lindsay wasn't as effective as it just matted his hair and didn't quite get to the cradle cap properly.
Olive oil works well. But whatever you use it can take some time to get rid of it
Someone suggested MOO GOO INFANT SCALP CREAM to me when I was looking for something to clear up DS cradle cap. He has loads of hair too. This product is the BEST! It's all natural (no nasty chemicals) and made from milk. I used it twice and it's never come back. If you google Moo Goo, you'll find the site.
I got this from their website for you:
It cost me about $25 for a massive jar. It's well worth it.:
We have many parents who use Moogoo Udder Cream on their children's sensitive skin. However, we have not been able to suggest a product for infants that have scalp problems because many contain chemicals we would not use on a baby. The scalp needs a different formulation to the rest of the skin because of the build up of sebum associated with growing hair.
We formulated a gentle and natural version of our Udder Cream that contains Tea-Tree, Rosemary and Lavender Essential Oil and Piroctone Olamine. Something safe for a baby's scalp that works by controlling the micro-flora of the scalp that can cause scalp problems for babies. We suggest massaging the cream onto the scalp in the same way you would a moisturizer in the morning and evening.
The cream is also used by adults who have red, dry skin around the hairline, ears, eyebrows or along the side of the nose. Controlling the micro-flora of the skin in these areas can help brin gback the skin to its normal condition.
The scalp cream is a little more expensive than our other creams as the extra ingredients are very expensive ( the same price per gram as silver!) but we know most parents would rather pay a bit more for something safe, rather than the cheaper chemicals.

I use to use it with dry hair but I use natural products instead of commercialised ones that you dont know what chemicals are in them. So with natural products you can use them on dry hair as it sticks and blends much easier than on wet hair.
I just rub bicarb on his scalp while I'm in the shower with him, then follow up with moisturising baby wash.
thanks for the tips... i did the olive oil last night and it seemed to get rid of lots of it, though it is still flaking off now!!
i will keep at that for this week and then if no luck i will order some of the moo goo which sounds lovely (though like other creams i am not sure how i will get to his scalp through his hair). he seemed to love the head massage/rubbing w the olive oil anyway LOL!
i have also used the jurlique baby soothing cream behind his ears and there is now NOTHING there so that seems a good solution for any non hairy bubs or cc on face/ears
Just to add - make sure you use heaps of olive oil- baby will look like a greaseball, but it works better that way. I put it on before bed and had another sheet tucked in under DD's head, so the oil didn't wreck her good sheets. Then in the morning comb all the flaky bits out- I used a fine tooth comb and brushed against the direction of the hair.
oh that's interesting - i have just been giving him a good rub withthe olive oil about an hour before his shower - then combing out and then washing in shower... it seems to be working but not completely getting it all out at once (ie making progress slowly) but should i be leaving it in for a lot longer???
also how long does cradle cap usually last? he is 10 weeks now... and it just started this week...
I second the Moo Goo cream - and their soap is lovely for kids too.
Only thing that got rid of it was the moo goo and DH carefully picking it off once moist....
is it neccessary to remove the craddle cap?? reason i ask is that sophie still has it and i ve never bothered to pick it off!! she has hair that covers it so i dont notice it
AJP I don't think you need to remove it - DH just wanted to and I thought it looked nicer (DS was bald for quite some time LOL!!)
Hi Pregpan,
I put baby oil on Olivias head and use to do it with the boys.
YES I did see the post thanks Caro but I decided to go with the olive oil for now... for a few reasons.. mainly bc DS has sooooo much hair that i think a cream would be tricky and also i would prefer to use all natural on his skin if I can get away with it...
It seems to be clearing up quite nicely but if it doesnt to the bepanthem i will go...
My poor lil possum Jasmine has bad cradle cap.She also unfortunately got daddies bad skin too.
She looks spotty all the time...MCHN today said she probably has very sensitve skin too. But the cradle cap is bad..
What did you find helped?? Or what can i do to make it better.
Nurse said to use QV wash and then put olive oil thru her hair and lightly brush it with a soft brush
I think there are some threads around on cradle cap but we just used olive oil before a bath and washed it out then gave a comb. It looks bad but isn't really a problem to worry about as such. Once the hair grows you wont be able to see it. A large percentage of bubs get cradle cap.
Also bubs can get spots for heaps of reasons eg baby acne or just where there sweat glands are developing. Our DS had ezcema and we had to bath only every second day in water only (no wash).

kim sophie has always had craddle cap but because she has long hair we dont notice it and hence done nothing about it!! but.... we recently stopped using the johnsons shampoo and it has dramatically decreased!!! id only wash her water too, moogoo scalp cream is meant to be good too
i used olive oil for DD and i stopped washing her hair so often and it worked well!!
if i wash her hair every day or second day it was so bad then changed to once a week and its been great, no cradle cap for months!!
DS's face was covered in milk pimples (I mean covered..I counted up to 100 one day and then stopped counting) it probably peaked at about 8-9 weeks of age. His skin is fine. He does get occasional, mild eczema but at this stage they're suggesting he will grow out of it.
SO while Jasmine may have sensitive skin, the spots are really quite normal for her age, and are probably peaking at about now.
I agree with the spots, or milia as they are called. They should start to improve now, but as for the rest of her skin try some Alpha Keri in her bath. Alister has ezcema all over his body and I use that in his bath, but he only gets bathed every 2nd day. It leaves his skin feeling so lovely. I also use a cortisone cream on it too. With the cradle cap, you can use baby/olive/vegetable oil, or bepanthen/sorbolene/lucas papaw cream. The key is to persevere with it every day until it is gone, it's the only way you will get rid of it. In Alisters case though I used some of his cortisone cream because it just kept coming back and it hasn't been back since.
My DD had really inflamed cradle cap, so I got her some cortisone cream and it cleared up over a day! After that if it ever came back I put olive oil on it every night for 3 nights without washing it, then washed it on the 4th day and it was fine. I wouldn't recommend using baby oil as its full of nasty chemicals that will make it worse. There are some great natural baby products on the market that are tons better than J&J or even QV etc.
Hope it gets better soon
The spots arent milk spots.....the spots are all over her body, in joins etc. Is def eczema....DH had it bad as well as a bub.
Ill try a few of you great suggestions..ta!
I now use Body Shop shea cleanser on Pip, that's doing wonders for him - the cradle cap I used the walnut body scrub (exfoliating) which is basically ground walnut shells in the shea butter.
Prior to that, the only thing that really worked on his cradle cap was marinating him in olive oil for about a half hour before his bath, or rubbing bicarb into his hair during his bath.
We haven't had CC since I moved to the shea butter cleanser.
Isabelle has eczema and had cradle cap early on. I used Moo Goo Infant scalp care on her cradle cap and it cleared it up completely after 2 applications and now after literally spending hundreds of dollars of products like Gaia, Avado, Emu Oil, Avocado Oil etc I now use good ol baby sorbelene or the Keri moisturiser on her eczema. We use cortisone that has been prescribed if it flares up and use it just for a day and then back to the creams. The key with eczema is to keep the skin moisturised all the time, and sorbelene with glycerine helps do that.
She had the little spots too for a few weeks early on that passed but the eczema stayed.
Good luck hun.
Hi Kim! Joel had bad cradle cap when he was a bub and I tried heaps of things, but I found the thing that cleared it up was sorbelene. I'm going to try it on Kieran soon because he has it too. Hope you find something that works!
aw sorry Kim I guess I assumed thats what they were. DS gets mild eczema, which I ended up resorting to elocon to treat after everything else failed. However I wuoldn't be advising a steroid as a first option, there may be somthing a lot more gentle that can help. My GF's little girl gets it quite severly at all her joints etc, and a couple of the main things they find helps are to not bath her every day (unless she's dirty obviously) its more like every 3-4 days, and to dress her is 100% cotton everything so that its not overly aggrevated.
Re the cradle cap, DS' was very severe - his head looked like a dired out riverbed. I was told to leave it alone and it would get better, but it didn't so I went the olive oil route and it took a few goes but when it cleared up it was gone for good. Be prepared to leave it on overnight and get some messy sheets though.
Hey Kim,
I use Dermeze on Liam's eczema most days, and I also used it on his cradle cap, which wasn't bad compared to some poor kids, but still stubborn for a while. For us, I found that the Dermeze worked better than the olive oil, but he did look like a greasy little monkey with it all over his head. When his eczema looks like it's flaring (a lot these days, with the hot weather), I also put on dermaid (1% soft lotion) twice a day, and am extra generous with the Dermeze. It's not curing him as such, but it does seem to have toned things down considerably, and he doesn't scratch himself which is good.
I know no one has posted for a while but.............I found this link on my search of Google for treatments of cc and eczema. Someone ages ago, way back on page one or two mentioned MooGoo which I had heard of but not thought about investigating further.
so.....just ordered my youngest some creams from MooGoo and reading the testimonials on their www, it looks like its a winner already.
NJ has pretty bad cc - olive oil kinda worked, cortizone (sp) cream kinda worked, sorbelene hardly worked and now he just has cc with a big old red head! :( I noticed in the last fortnight he is developing eczema on the thighs, back of knees, one underarm and belly and back!:doh::(
I will let you know how he goes girls.
I also have itchy, red flaky skin on my cheeks and sometimes on my nose - real attractive. Have used cortizone ointment but it only comes back after not using it for a few days or when I use face wash.:wall: I plan on using MooGoo Full Cream on my face so I will also let you know how that ones goes for anyones future reference!
My eldest Bailey has a dry scalp, thankfully hidden by hair. I am thinking of buying their shampoo and conditioner to help him with that and DP might be interested as he gets heaps of dandruff.
xxxx
ive also heard great things about their scalp cream, the other stuff is great!!
i found that johnson and johnson shampoo was what gave DD cradle cap, that went straight into the bin!!
lol......I have a shelf load of lotions and potions that might be finding a new home in the bin! MooGoo had info on their www too about mineral oil and after watching TodayTonight last night and what Mineral Oil can do to babies, my J&J Baby Oil went in the bin! Sad though because I LOVED the smell!
