At what age did you "let" your baby sleep on their tummy?

Now that my DD is mobile I let her sleep however she chooses. If she falls asleep on her tummy I leave her there. If she falls asleep and I put her to bed I always put her on her back but when I put her to bed awake she will often move around in bed and fall asleep on her tummy. If they can hold their heads up on their own then I think the risk of suffocating is decreased. Once they're rolling, crawling etc they will sleep how they choose. I've never thought to move her once she's put herself to sleep a certain way.

Four months. He refused to sleep any other way one night and that was that. He was able to roll both ways and held his head up well so I tried not to worry too much... First few nights were a bit nerve wracking tho, I felt like I was doing something illegal putting him on his belly.

8 months ds started rolling onto his tummy but with his bum up in the air not flat and he head is turned to one side so I wasn't worried. But he rarely sleeps on his back, he has been on his side since birth as we never wrapped him.

Thanks for your replies everyone, and for the link JustMe. I showed it to DH and so I think he wll let DS sleep in his chosen position in peace now lol.

Once a child can roll from front to back and back to front, then it is really quite pointless (imho) rolling them back. I believe, the major concerns with SIDS and tummy sleeping is baby not having the strength to turn their head.
Can I ask, how does you DH maintain the back sleeping during the night? Surely bub must roll over lots during the night.

5 months. She only does it for day sleeps. At night she sleeps on her back and does not move (her arms flail a bit, but she doesn't roll)

Exactly what my DS did too. He loves sleeping on his belly now, just like his mama :)

DD1 slept on her tummy from birth. That is just how she slept best, for longest.

DD2 slept on her tummy for a week, from 4days old, then decided she didn't really like it slept on her back again. She nows rolls in the cot and it will wake her up.


There is absolutely no reason why at that age bubs cannot stay on his tummy, he rolled himself there, can control his head, etc. Let him be.

my baby son has been sleeping on his tummy since he was born. He is 3 months now and he will only sleep on his back in his reclining chair. My doctor advised me to let him sleep the way he liked

About 4 months. DD started rolling over by then, so we put her in a sleeping bag and she'd automatically rollover and go to sleep. I used to roll her back on her back, but she'd wake, so I left her to sleep how she could in the end.
