what are you told about bathing your baby?

I didnt bath our ds for the first week of his life lol it was too hard while he was hooked up to tubes and machines. When we did we just used water, after a few bath e started to add a moo goo wash

Interestingly at my SJOG antenatal class they had the bounty bags there to one side (which had no J&J branding or products whatsoever incidentally) but they had another type of 'bounty' bag which they put on our seats with all the official paraphernalia - a BAO bag which was full of natural and alternative samples and pamphlets- rose hip oil, ecostore laundry wash, ads for cushi tushi, etc.

The hospital or widwives didn't mention anything about bathing products. I had all my three kids at Frances Perry. They had free samples to use from Gai for use if you chose, they didbn't mention if you should or shouldn't use them. They really left it up to the parent.

RBWH just had warm water, and that's what was recommended to us for the first little while (and it made sense to me).

I think he was about 4 weeks old when I started to use QV and Mustela products.

As for me - I use natural soaps as much as I can; but I took advice from my ABA group in the leadup to having him, so avoided using soap/perfumes around my chest area for the first little while so he could learn my smell and that it was a safe place for him... :)

I remember taking DD for a bath and there was a variety of products there. I had never bathed a baby before so asked what to do. I remember asking something about bubble bath:redface: We were basically told we could use whatever we wanted. I think we were recommended sorbolene cream. When we got home we used J&J :redface:as that is what we had and I thought it was good for babies:redface: I soon realised that it was doing DD's skin no favours and we now use a natural product. I know that I'll be going natural from the start next time.

When we were shown how to bath DD, the midwife basically said to just use water. However another midwife gave me some j&j samples (out of kindness) & I didn't have the heart to tell her I don't want it.

Thanks for all the input into this thread. I have approached the head of midwifery at my uni regarding what we have been taught so far for infant care (which was only one short class, I'm sure there's more to come) and she is keen to discuss the topic tomorrow at our tutorial. The information you have given me as a snapshot poll will be very helpful for this discussion, so thank you :)
