    Undercharged for electricity?

I changed electricity and gas companies last year, as our electricity bill was ridiculous.
New gas bills came, no drama.
It took a while for the first electricity bill -6months- and when it came it was a LOT cheaper than we used to get, about a quarter of our old price ( and this was during a house Reno when we had workmen using power tools all day). The next bill was similar.
Obviously we are being undercharged, there can't be anything wrong with our smart meter as this didn't happen with the last company. On the bill it is saying we use as much electricity as a one person house -we definately don't!!!

Has this happened to anyone? Am I going to get a bill with all the catch up costs on it? Or can't they do anything once I have paid?

They can backcharge. Insist on a meter reading right now to avoid a really big bill in a few months.

They usually can only go back 12 months.

Does the reading on the bill match your meter reading? It should also say if it was an actual reading or not.

It says actual reading on the bill but I haven't looked at the meter, I am sort of living in denial to be honest, cos the bills are so cheap.
They even sent an amended bill and gave me $16 credit for the last bill cos they said they made a mistake and charged me wrong. Not the most organised company I have ever dealt with.

It depends on what state. Some states have a three year time period. Most are 12 months though.

Maybe your old company overcharged you. If the rates on the bill match the rates they say they charge on their website, it was an actual read, and the meter readings match, then I think you can relax.

If you have a smart meter it takes reads in 30-60 minute intervals. The retailer has acceas to all the data. Depending on the state/suburb they 'should' be all accurate. You usually find that its more of a billing issue. Call them & ask for an explanation.
