With my DS1 and DD I stayed the night with DH in the birthing suite and went home the next morning since after that I would've been moved to a shared room. With DS2 (2 weeks ago), I had to stay 6 nights because of him being prem and it was fantastic for my recovery. I didn't have to strain myself and got so much sleep. My bleeding was a lot less too, I think because I could take it easy. However, bubs was in the Special Care Nursery so it's not exactly the same as having to take care of the baby yourself but the other woman in my room had her baby with her and I was quite impressed by how well the midwives took care of her. They helped her a lot with breastfeeding so that she was ready to go before leaving and they were available to take care of bubs if the mum needed to sleep without worrying about the baby for a couple hours. So I've decided if I go for a 4th, I will definitely stay in the hospital 2-3 nights. The only negative was that DS1 and DD gave DH a hard time at home and I felt a bit guilty about putting them all through that.

i stayed for 2 nights (about 36 hours) after i had DS. i had 2 midwife visits at home & one from the mchn. i ended up with worse swelling of my feet/legs when i got home than i'd ever had during my PG & one of the m/w told me off for trying to do too much at home - i think i learnt my lesson & would take it easier if there is a next time. i found it hard to force myself to rest at home but i really hated being apart from my DP & missed my own bed/decent food etc.
