i was born at 5:17am on 1st april 1981. my mum got to the hospital only 15min before i was born.
i am the youngest of 3. my first sis mum was there 1hour before birth late at night
2nd sis only 1/2 hour before in the middle of the day.
we lived in the country and maybe mum thought she had more time to get to the hospital im not sure. no pain relief for any of us and all natural vag births.

My mum read some books about pregnancy and parenting - she still has them, very 70s - but didn't do any antenatal classes and didn't have any real idea about birth or breastfeeding.
All three of us were straightforward births - no drugs or other interventions. Not sure whether she had doctors there or not. We were all post-dates - 17, 7 & 12 days past the EDDs.
When my oldest sister was born in 197something mum got the full pain relief works and an enema. She hallucinated badly and hated every moment, so for 3 subsequent kids she refused any pain relief or an enema.
I was born in the royal hospital for women, paddington (now luxury townhouses) in January 1977, one of the hottest days on record, a true heat wave. After checking the chart following my birth, mum saw I was a "wrigley's removal". After investigating (and being told off for reading her own chart), mum learned I was posterior and removed via clamps. She hadn't known that, with no pain relief, so it obviously wasn't that bad.
I have a photo of myself 6 hours old, head full of hair. I looked exactly like my 2 babies at birth (but more hair).

I was born in January 1986 at Dubbo Base Hospital NSW (Dad was a miner and we lived in a mining town 3.5 hours west.) Born via Cesarean, no idea why and won't ever know.. That's as much as I know about my birth, don't know if I was breastfed, what my first words were, when I walked, nothing as my Dad died when I was 11, Mum died when I was 16 and as my Grandparents lived in Sydney and weren't too involved with my younger days, plus have shot memories, I have no one to ask these things.. Which really sucks now I've had my own baby and realise how much knowing all those things would mean to me!
My brother was born via c-sec too in September 88 but once again I don't remember why. I only know about the c-secs as I remember Mum always bashing on and blaming us for her scars lol!

My mum had 3 classical c/s's. We were all born in Auburn Hospital in Sydney. I'm not sure of all of the exact details though.
Brother #1 was born after 40wks I think. Mum had apparently been in labour for a few days, but was getting nowhere with birthing bro, so she ended up going in for a c/s on christmas night, after her OB had had his chrissy dinner! He was fairly big, about 9pounds or so. That was in 1969.
Brother #2 was born very early, at about 31/32 weeks. Mum went into preterm labour and the docs couldn't stop it. Brother was born via emergency c/s. Apparently he was tiny and very very sick. They didn't expect him to live. He was baptised that night with the expectation he would die. Obviously he didn't! That was in 1970.
I was born in 1978. About 6 or 7 weeks early. Again my mum had been in labour for a few days and the docs tried to stop it all, but couldn't. I was fairly big for my gestation, about 4-5pounds I think.
1987 - #1 (girl) Nambour General 41+3 3.5 hours 7lbs 6oz epi
1988 - #2 (girl, Me) Nambour General on EDD 2.5 hours 9lbs gas and air
1991 - #3 (girl) Nambour General 37 weeks 2 hours 6lbs 5oz gas and air
1992 - #4 (boy) Maleny Hospital 39 weeks ARM due to constant false labor 5.5 hours 8lbs 8oz gas and air
1994 - #5 (girl) Nambour General 38+2 induced using drip due to chicken pox 4 hours 25 minutes 7lbs 1oz gas and air
1996 - #6 (boy) Caboolture Hospital 38+1 his twin didn't make it due to TTTS so they made the decision early on to induce. Using drip 3hours 45 minutes 7lbs 9oz gas and air, pethidine.
2005 - #7 (girl) Caboolture Hospital 40+4 2 hours 9lbs 11oz gas and air
2007 - #8 (girl) Caboolture Hospital 38 weeks induced due to high blood pressure 6 hours 6lbs 12oz gas and air
2009 - #9 (boy) Caboolture Hospital 36 weeks "crash c-section" due to Placental abruption 6lbs 7oz
I was born in 1982 at South Eastern District private hospital, Noble Park.
I was born 2 days early, due on 15th, but came on 13th. I was also born BUM FIRST in breech position. Doctors tried to flip me, but I didn't want to budge! It was natural not ceasar, I don't think mum even had gas (not sure)
My brother was born 9 weeks premature in Dandenong hospital. He was sooo tiny! He was at the hospital for a little while before mum took him home, but theres nothing wrong with him now, he's huge!! But he does need glasses when he reads. But that't it, mum was pretty lucky. :)
I am number 4 out of 5 children. Elder of fraternal twins. My mum had VB for all of us.
My brother and were born a week past our EDD. I don't recall mum saying anything about pain relief. In fact I can recall mum saying she laughed with the nurses about popping us out like rabbits.
Mum didn't know she was expecting twins. I was born bum first and was then told that she had another one coming.
Pretty amazing hey how things were able to happen the natural way without US and intervention for twins back then. I also know a lady who had VB twins in the 80's that were unexpected.:
me 1974 rockhampton QLD mums waters broke at 4am, she went to hospital around 7am, she could feel contractions but no pain lasting a min every 5min, she was 2cm dilated at 3pm mum was still contraction every 5min for a min no further dilation so a caeser was performed, at 3pm saturday, mum saw me at 5am sunday morning her words she was a barren cow no milk no engorgment no collustrum so I was formula fed and brought down from nursery every 3-4 hrs, on the wed morning mum devoloped a severe infection which left he bed ridden for 14 days with visits from me where the nurses waved me to her from the doorway then took me on their rounds, (mum was nurse at the hospital) I spent a lot of time in a trolley being wheeled around the hospital
my sister (aussienic) 1976 townsville elective caeser at 36 weeks, mum had nic around 10am and had her with her by 12pm she spent the days sleeping beside mums bed but in nursery at night again no milk came thru they started mum on anti bi day 1 but she still devoloped a infection around day 4 nic was able to be with mum but also spent a lot of time in SC as she was failing to thrive and losing weight...mum was realeased on day 12 from hospital
Oh yeah, the length of hospital stay when I was born was 5-7 days for a VB nearly 2 weeks for a CS.
I was the first of three kids after 6 years of infertility.
I was born in July 1985 at the Mater Private Hospital in Brisbane. I was a 8 hour vaginal birth with no drugs. 5lb 4oz.
My sister was born in Seymour, Victoria (public hosp I think?) in Sept 1987. She was a 4hr vaginal birth no drugs. 6lb something.
My brother was born in Campbelltown Public in Jan 1993. He was a 90min induction no drugs. 6lb something.
OMG yes! My home town.. Dad was killed at CSA in a shaft collapse. Lived there for my first 12 years :):
My siblings and I were all born at Dubbo Base although we were not from Dubbo. My parents local hospital didn't do c/s so mum felt safer at a hospital that could manage with all types of emergencies (and another reason why my mother insisted I had to birth my 1st there also)
My brother was born on his due date. Mum had an episiotomy (it was routine back then in the 70's almost everyone had one) Mum went to hospital in labour and was 1cm when she arrived. 12hrs later she was very distressed and still 1cm so they started a synto drip and my brother arrived a little over 1hr later. I know mum had gas (not sure if peth also) and was wanting more "mice" (ice) Dad fainted when the placenta came out and mum was in stirups for the birth.
2yrs later my sister arrived at 37weeks. Apparently mum was 3cm when she arrived and shortly after insisted she wanted to push but her midwife told her she wasn't ready and left her. Mum started pushing anyway and got abused by the midwife as she wasn't ready to push and my sister was born onto the bed lol
2yrs after this I was born at 38weeks. Mum had an APH at 35weeks and was in hosital for 2weeks then went home for 1week before going into spontaneous labour. Mum had a graze with me but I dont know about pain relief. I was the biggest bub at 8lb5oz. Mum stayed 10days after I was born.
8yrs after me my youngest brother was born. Mum had an epidural as she felt to old to go through it again but it wasn't effective and the pain crippled half her body and the other half was numb. My brother was born shortly after midnight and although he could have been born the day before mum thought it would be nice to hold of for a few minutes so we could share a birthday (he was born on my 8th birthday) The hospital wanted to send her home that day and mum was very disappointed she couldnt stay for a few days to rest. She did not want to come home to the older 3 children.

I was born Vaginally at 42 weeks in July 1984 at the original Townsville Mothers Hopsital. My Mum was induced for post-dates and blood pressure issues. I can't remember if she had pain relief or not. She was 16.
My Sister was born November, 1988. Another Vaginal birth. Again not sure what pain relief she had.
My Brother was born September, 1993. Another vaginal birth. No drugs. I was 9 and remember the night she went into labour. She asked if I wanted to come but I chickened out.
Bro and Sis were both born at Kirwan Womens Hospital in Townsville.
got preg at 17 on the pill (doc failed to mention ab's negate the pill) i was born 25th August 1987 at about 2pm or so my mum says lol by "elective" C/S ob told her i wouldnt fit :o i was breech and when they turned me manually i turned back (ouch sorry mum) so c/s at 38 weeks for her
my sister was born 24th May 1991 about 11 am by C/S her ob was pro vbac and thats wat she wanted went into prem labour then they discovered mum had a double uterus and cervix (docs still dont know how it was missed the first time around and amazed at the fact they managed to turn me) had c/s at 40 weeks after prem labour was stopped says she prefered staples (my sister) to stitches (me)
says that she only had 2 babies coz we were perfect (sorry again mum lol)
loved being there for both of my vb's told me she would be no help but she was awesome :) best mum ever xoxoxox
ETA: forgot to add i was born at Dandenong Hospital in VIC and my sister was born at the South East Private Hospital also in VIC said the food was much better at the PH lol she got to stay 10 days after with both of us

I have an older sister who was born 18 months later at the same hospital. Sadly she was stillborn.
I was born approx 18 months later (81) at Albury Base Hospital (the old one) via scheduled C-Sect at Mum's request.
6 years later my little sister was born was PANCH in Vic via scheduled C-Sect (well, it was classed as Emergency as baby wasn't happy to wait any longer!)
1978 Blacktown District Hospital (me) 36 weeks, emergency classical section (which is enormous in terms of scars) due to placental abruption. Mum was in ICU and didn't see me until day 3. She tried BF but didn't like it so stopped. I was 5ish pounds. Dad wouldn't hold me cos I was too little.
1979 same hossy (sis) elective section at 38 weeks due to previous delivery history. Lower segment.
1983 same hossy (bro) elective section at 38 weeks as above. Lower segment again.
All generals.
I was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted at the age of 6 months, so I have very little idea of how my birth was! =P
I was born April 84 canterbury hospital Sydney 12:20am normal drug free but long birth, I think mum said 24hrs. They kept saying she wasn't in labor but she was.
My brother was Feb 86 Newcastle marter don't know much but drug free and normal. She hemorrhaged after tho and my bro was in distress from swallowing too much meconium.
My sis was feb 88 and mum said it was her easiest birth.
I'm pretty sure we were all around about on time, think I was her overdue-est tho. Sad tht she was due the same wk as a friend went thru the whole preg together but her friend lost her bub at 11days overdue.

Older sister- born 82- induced, natural labour, dad used the gas.
Me- born 84- natural labour- born with the cord wrapped around my neck and blue.
Younger sister- born 86- dad was busy telling mum it was snowing outside. Induced, otherwise natural labour.
Youngest sister- born 88- resident very excited, first birth for him, went out to scrub up and sister was born into mum's arms- he missed the whole thing- dad was asleep. Natural labour.
All born in Melbourne.

After 5 positive piddle sticks and i think she said, 2 blood tests (2 as she refused to belive any of the other tests) she finaly realized i was on the way!
Born '87 a few months after mums 18th at Maitland hospital NSW. Mum was in hospital waddling like a beeched whale up the halls for a week. She was admitted on my due date, i arrived a week over baked showing my lazy side :lol: apparently her main memory of the moment was this slimy thing touching her leg, it turned out to be my leg.
Less painful than my sister who arrived 11yrs and 11 days later head first at the john hunter hospital.
That my friends is my birth story as it has been passed on to me, and repeated many times!
Nither were breast fed, and no idea on pain meds.
Me - I was born in 1974 at Boothville Maternity Hospital in Brisbane. It was primarily a maternity hospital and hostel for 'unwed' mothers run by the Salvation Army and most mums had their babies adopted out, but I think in the 70s it started offering beds to patients like my mum and dad. It was pretty revolutionary at the time because dads were allowed at the births, so my dad saw me being born. I was delivered by forceps by an obstetrician who apparently had just come back from playing a rugby game for Queensland or Brisbane or something?? My mother told me the story many years ago before she died. Anyway all I know is she said the forceps were worse than the actual labour.
Now that I have had my own baby and have read more about natural birth, I also understand another story that she always used to tell. As was the practice in those days, I was kept in the nursery away from her room. Apparently she had a major panic attack because she walked past the nursery one time and noticed my plastic crib was raised and all the other babies' cribs were down so she was convinced there was something wrong with me and I was dying :( I think about that now and realise how important rooming in is and how her reaction was perfectly natural for a mum separated from her baby in those first few days especially after a traumatic birth. I don't think she had much sympathy though :(
My brother was born in the same hospital in 1976. He was breech, with the cord around his neck and blue. So another traumatic birth. She had the same problems with him in the nursery as well. She believed the nurses hated him because they dressed him in ugly clothes. These stories have always been a joke in our family but now I see the other side and that they were just my poor mum being forcibly detached from her tiny babies and falling apart :(
I actually did my highschool work experience in this hospital and they let me look through their old records and I found mine and my brother's. I was being fed vegemite in a bottle!!! My mum breastfed me for a few weeks but not my brother. I would love to talk to her about her experience but sadly she is no longer with us.
Just wanted to add as I think it is an amazing story, that my DH, who was born in 1972, was a fraternal twin and both he and his twin were breech! They were born vaginally and observed by about 20 student doctors! His poor mother!!
My Nan, who is 94 and had 2 children, told me in her day after a normal, uncomplicated birth, women stayed in bed in hospital for 2 weeks!
She also told me she didn't know her due dates exactly. Nobody bothered calculating it.

Kuraiza I am guessing that those two practices probably meant a whole lot less stress for the mums, although staying at home in bed for two weeks sounds better! Would help establish breastfeeding and eradicate all that stress that new mums have with everyone trying to have a piece of their baby!

Sister: Mid 70's, Royal Womens Brisbane, private Ob. Induced 2 weeks post dates due to pre-eclampsia, Mum got first contractions in the lift on the way down to maternity, but when she got down there they said Sister was in foetal distress so got whisked away for emergency c/s (GA and classical cut). Sister was 9 pound something. I found out yesterday that Mum didn't get to hold her for 2 days :( Mum really wanted to breastfeed but the midwives kept giving Sister bottles which Mum is still pretty angry about! She was also told that all subsequent babies had to be c/s, and she couldn't have more than 3. She was devastated because she always wanted 4.
Brother: Late 70's, Royal Womens Brisbane, same ob (Mum said in hindsight she has no idea why she went through this guy again, cos she didn't actually like him!) Epidural CS at 38 weeks, no complications. Brother was 8 pound something. She told all the midwives that she'd breastfed her first baby just fine and to leave her alone, Brother was breastfed til self weaning :)
Moi: Early 80's, Roma Hospital (teensy tiny town in outback QLD). C/S under GA (she didn't really trust the OB to do an epidural) at 36 weeks because OB had a holiday booked (!!!!). I was 5 pound something and had a raging case of jaundice, under lights for a while. I was roomed in (only baby to be roomed in) and breastfed til self weaning around 2. They also tied her tubes during the C/S which she was aware of, but not happy about. She says now she's ok with having 3 kids, but I suspect she still wishes she had 4!
But the best family Birth Story I've heard is my Great Grandma, who birthed breech twins in a tent during the goldrush :)

I Have 2 brothers to my stepmum aswell i can find details, i know my youngest brother was 8wks early, emergency c/s due to placenta previa and my stepmum was bleeding out :(

Me, 1977, private hospital in Melb, ob, long labour (24 hrs total), eventually an epi and forceps delivery. I think episiotomy as well. Bf until 15-16 mths. 6 lb 11 oz.
Sister, 1979, same hosp and ob, natural labour, about 6 hrs, no drugs or assistance. Bf until about 12 mths. 6 lb 10 oz.
Sister, 1981, Townsville, private hosp and GP to assist, natural labour, about 4 hrs, no drugs or assistance. Bf for 11 mths. 6 lb 12 oz.
She says we were all born around our due dates. Went into labour naturally each time.
Not that it matters...but with such a strong hertitage of birthing at home...Did you yourself chose this option?:

I'm really enjoying these posts. I'm saddened though, by how many of us have lost siblings to still birth or neonatal deaths. :cry: My mum had a loss at 18 weeks prior to my birth and another after me at 16 weeks. I often wonder what my brothers would be like.

My mum birthed two children, however she lost her first baby at around 25wks due to German Measles.
1984 - My Mum was 20. I was born 6weeks early. Mum had two major haemorrhages while carrying me, second haemorrhage was at 34weeks and was subsequently rushed to hospital. When she got there she had to use the toilet to do what she was thought was number 2’s, however she had passed the placenta. That is about all she remembers. She ended up having an emergency caesarean, blood transfusions and had to be resuscitated while on the table. She didn’t see me until I was three days old, when we were both well enough. Both lucky to be alive.
1989 – My brother was born VBAC just with Gas I think. Mum should of had a caesarean. They had to use forcipes to get him out & he was born with a cone shaped head. Mum suffered a fourth degree tear into her bowel. Unfortunately the tear causes her problems till this very day.
Surprisingly Mum still wanted to have more children but my Dad would not let her as he was afraid he would lose her. She is a trooper and my legend xoxo!

Me, I was born in 1986, at Brisbane. I was 3 weeks late, mum had gone to see her OB and they said they would induce her the next day. as soon as she got out of the hosp she started getting pains, but just dealt with them, Dad took her up to the hosp the next day for her inducement, and she told them they better check first, she was already 8cm dilated. they broke her waters and the pain was horrendous so they gave mum some pethadine which just stopped everything for 20 mins, even the contractions! so the nurses decided nothing is happening they are going out for dinner, 5 mins later mum was screaming at dad to get the back because she as pushing and I popped out soon after. it only took like to hours mum said from the time she went in to hosp until I as born...
the twins in 1994 - Induced in Hosp. Mum's liver started to fail (Apparently this is a pregnancy thing)
brother in 1997 - induced in hosp, mum was over due and the liver thingy started up again. Haemorrhaged afterwards had to go in for surgery. Yes to drugs
Sister in 2003 - induced in hosp, because of brother's traumatic birth. Yes to drugs.
It is sad, my mum also suffered a mc after my brother who passed and another b/w her DS3 & DS4.:
I don't know hos she ever continued after loosing M but all i can say is she is (like most of the wonderful BB mummies) a very strong woman :grouphug:
My older sister was born in July 81 at Royal Women's in Sydney, via emergency c/s due to failure to progress. When she was born they found that she had Spina Bifida and sadly, she died at 7 and a half weeks old.
I was born in September 82, at Royal Women's in Sydney. Forceps and 'minor' pain relief... not sure what minor consists of, Mum has never said what she had.
My brother was born in May 85, at Armidale hospital. No pain relief, complately natural birth.
I was born at 37 weeks, VB, no idea about pain relief.
Had to have three blood transfusions, touch and go apparently but "she's a little fighter" according to the nurses. Came out blue and was in a humidicrib and "your dad wasn't allowed to see you for two weeks." Mum is prone to exaggeration :)
No idea about BFing early on but know I was FF quite early.
Didn't like sleeping and apparently mum would take me to bed with her at midnight and I'd finally sleep then.
i was born in 84 on my due date after threatened labour at 26weeks....
natural birth but im not sure wheather drugs were involved, mum had to have a blood transfusion
my brother was born in 1994 1 day over his "EDD", induced due to high BP, mum had a epidural
my second brother was born in 1997 3 weeks early, a CS due to high BP
My sister (29 November 75) was breech, and well and truly overdue. Mum was actually in hospital for the the Whitlam dismissal, so she was in for ages. I think she was very puffy so they were watching her for toxaemia and pre-eclampsia. The threat of a c-section scared my sister out (apparently they wouldn't induce a breech baby). Mum had pethidine but had a vaginal birth after about an 8 hour labour. Bega District Hospy. She had an oversupply of milk and my sister was a slow feeder so it was an unhappy, short bf journey.
I was way late, due around 20 April 78. Mum was hospitalised again (Mater Hospy in Forbes) beforehand. I was induced on 2 May. Pethidine again, about a 7 hour labour. I was all flaky, shriveled and yuck :) I was an eager feeder but Mum's milk never came in.
Mum's 2 late births and my sister's overstayers made me think I'd go late term with my bub too. Hahahahaha :) Love to break the mould!
No probs :-) no I went with the hospital where my MIL works. I will be trying to do a home birth next one, if it's less of a trouble maker than cman.:
It's amazing no one really tells you how common infant or foetal loss is before you give birth.
