I had a couple of days of pre-labour erm... bowel cleansing shall we say? hehe.. in this time I lost my plug and after a while the stomach cramps became regular contractions. My waters broke at 8pm as I was sitting eating my dinner. I was squirming my way through an unusually uncomfortable contraction and decided I'd better run to the loo.. on the way up the stairs I felt some of the waters, and when I sat on the loo I swear the REST of it all came out in one big gush! Of course it wasn't the rest of it.. continued to leak until DS was born hehe.
As for how we felt about it.. I guess it made it very real that I was having this baby! No umming and arring about whether it was labour or not hehe.
But my waters breaking stalled everything. I was hooked up to the drip next morning and had a smooth labour from there.
Have since asked my OB why I was hooked up to the drip so soon.. and even he doesn't know! grrr. He said normally he goes by the next 8am + 24hrs. He looked in my file and couldn't find a reason why he would have done it the next day. At least I know this time what his 'usual' timeframe is if it happens again this time, and can argue my way from there. heh.

My waters broke at the stroke of 12 midnight on my DD edd!!!! I had been have irregular BH's for the previous 4 nights between 6pm and 10pm. On the night I went into labour I called the hospital to ask if I could come in for monitoring. They told me to stay at home until I started to have 3 good contractions in a 20min time slot. At this point this was not happening and the BH's had stopped. DH and I decided to finalise my hos bag and then go to bed. I literally laid my head down on the pillow and as the clock ticked over to midnight I heard a pop. I rushed to the loo and niagra falls happened. I could not leave the loo for a solid 10 mins due to the flow. I then called the hos and was told to go in.
Before I got to my front door (1 hour later) I had gone through 5 maternity pads and ended up going to hos with a towel in between my legs.
Got to hos and midwife wanted to check to see if my waters had "really" broken just in case I had imagined it all!!!!! Ok I am blonde and it was my first time in labour but I was pretty sure that my waters had broken.
It was established that my waters had broken, so much so that they could not see my cervix and could not tell how far I had dialated.
Was put in a room to wait and offered a panadol....which I declined.
By 4am my contractions were 3mins apart and getting ouchy
-
About two hours after regular contractions started i was on all fours on the hospital bed breathing through a contraction when i felt a big 'pop' sensation but didn't feel anything else, after the next contraction i climbed off the bed and my waters stared gushing out.
-
My waters broke at 8:28pm Monday night 2 weeks before my EDD.
Just as i got out of bed i felt this pop & then a gush of water.
My contractions started after my waters had broken they were 15 min's apart at first.
We called the hospital they told us to come in within the hour.
I had our little girl at 1:38pm the next day.
-
My waters broke in my first labour mid contraction during transition while sitting on the toilet. In my second labour it broke during a pushing contraction. The poor midwife was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It is funny people talking about a "pop" sensation, both times if felt more like a "burst" to me.

With Jack I had woken up at 5am for a drink and called mum because I had a bad backache, she gave me some panadol and told me to go back to sleep, which I did.
I slept until 8am, and that's when I started to have regular contractions every 20 mins. this continued all day til about 7pm when they started getting stronger. Mum was at work and Dad had stayed at home to keep an eye on me. Mum got home at 7.30pm and I told her that it was getting really bad, so we got in the car and we drove to corowa, I don't really think the midwife there believed me as she ran me a bath and said this will stop the pain. After 5 mins of continous contractions, she rang for the Doctor, but of course he was in Wodonga and said that he would be there as soon as he could.
10 minutes I was in full labour in the delivery room and all of a sudden 'pop' my waters broke all over the midwife and not long after that Jack was born.

jess, do you have 7 kids?

My waters broke at 11:30pm on the night before our due date. I had just gone to bed and was reading, when I felt a substantial trickle (not enough to wet the mattress!) I told DH, and he was pretty suprised : "really? are you sure?? OMG". I hadn't had any contractions, but lots of BH (but had had them for months already). I went to the shower and lots of waters gushed out. DH heard it from the hall and said he thought I had turned on the tap for a bath! I was shaking with shock and excitement I think.
We went in to hospital, and I soaked through several pads, and a towel. It just kept on coming and coming. I had to walk through to the birth suite area with my jumper around my waist as my trackies were soaked.
My contractions became painful about 5 hours later, and DD was born 10 hours after waters breaking - on her due date.

With Kat I was induced with Gels. Two lots by 9pm. After the second lot of gels I was having prostin pains bad enough I could not settle even after two sleeping tablets and two panadine forte. I spent the night pacing the halls and laying on my bed trying to rest, not being able to so getting back up and pacing again. At 4:30am, I was lying in bed, and tossing and turning as I could not for the life of me get comfy and the pains were like very bad period pains and when I turned over I felt a "pop". A definite pop. I lay still for a bit thinking I had imagined it. Then decided I should check so waddled to loo. Yep, was very wet and musty and sweet smelling so I waddled up to sisters station to inform them (had already been in 5 days and knew the night shift nurses didn't answer buzzers for almost an hr and they were always sitting talking at the desk). They told me to go back to bed and buzz them WTF?? Anyway, almost made it back to bed and decided I wasn't going to be able to stop the flow anymore so changed direction towards the loo, took two steps and flooded the floor of my shared room. All I kept saying was "Oh my god this feels GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!" and they helped me into shower. I had towels and pads and more towels between my legs and the waters just kept running out and flooding everything. I'd soak a towel and pad within a few mins and they'd have to change it all again cause the bed was getting wet. I also saw very clearly they show. A big chunk of thick whitish red mucous. Not clear, rather opaque and solid. I'd been losing it for a week or so, but it was interesting to see the whole thing in one lump so to speak (nurse in me coming out there!). Dh was rung and arrived 20mins later and soon after I was taken to labour ward. I was sooooo excited as I knew I'd be meeting my bubs that very day and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Untill the synto drip was turned up to full flow and everything is a haze of pain from then on! Yowch! She was posterior too which was not good, but the nurses made me lie on my back the whole time. Anyway, enough of that. The waters breaking was gross but exciting! Can't wait for it to happen again! hehehe

My waters broke late labour, just before pushing started for 1st baby. It's funny because thats what I was waiting for to tell me I was in labour, but it ended up being one of the last things to happen in the labour process.

With Chloe I had been in labour for three days (Contractions no more than 10 mins apart.) and then at 11:30PM My waters broke,.. Slow leak. She was born about 12 hours later.
With Luke they broke them when i was stuck at 7 CM's

My water breaking was the first sign of labour. No show, no contractions.
I had been on one of my usual middle of the night toilet trips at about 1 or 2am. I woke again at 3am, feeling a little trickle. I got up and trickled all the way to the toilet, where I gushed. I rang the hospital, who told me to have a shower, and take my time to make my way in. We reached the hospital at 4am. I only had weak and very irregular contractions after my water broke. At about 8.30am, my OB came in and gave me the option to either wait 24hrs to see what happens, or to be induced. I chose to be induced and to get it over with. Drip went in at about 10.30-11am Charlotte was born at 3.55pm, posterior with the help of vacuum extraction as she was in disress.
Positive birth experience though.
Will definately do it again!!!!

In my first pregnancy my membranes ruptured (with a big gush) at 35 weeks (I had a previous bleed at 33 weeks but did not seem to be related). I went into the hospital and was seen by an OB and it was agreed that I would go home and wait to see if labour started spontaneously and see my regular OB (who was on holidays) in 48 hours. I went in to see my OB after 48 hours, I had no signs of labour, my cervix was unripe and certainly was not dialating but I did have some further bleeding and my baby's head was sitting very low. We decided to wait as I was only 35 weeks and agreed that the risks of prematurity outweighed the risks of infection and took a course of antibiodics. Fluid continued to leak in gushs but I had an ultrasound and monitoring and my baby was happy so we waited... On the 11 day I decided to have an induction as there was still no signs of labour and I was now just on 37 weeks. I had a healthy baby on the 12th day after my membranes ruptured, vaginally with no other interventions.
In my second pregnancy my membranes ruptured naturally a few minutes before my baby was born. I had a posterior labour (planned home waterbirth) and my baby turned naturally being born in an anterior position. Very different experience.

My first bub I was 11 days over and my waters broke as my DD was being born. It splashed all over DH's shoes because I was standing and he had his hands under along with the midwife to catch her. DD then proceeded to do her first poo all over me and the midwife so very messy.
Second bub 5 days over and ARM to establish labour, he was born 3 hours later. Third bub 7 days over, water birth and DS was born with the sac still around him.
-
1st Bub water broke whilst i was laying in bed at 9pm, felt a pop and ran to the toilet.. contractions didnt start for about an hour.. got to 3-4cm dilated and labour stopped. was then put on drip and deliverd 15 hrs after water breaking.
2nd bub same thing again waters broke whilst in bed at 1am this time... no contractions for at least an hour.. only got to 3-4cm again then put on drip..delivered 8 hrs after waters breaking.
both times felt very excited that our time had come to meet our little bump.. enjoyed the experience of my waters breaking.. wonder what will happen this time...
-
I got a pop feeling too, and a continuous trickle rather than a gush. Labour hadn't started 6 hours later so i was induced,

I went into hosp at 7pm to be induced, I had the gel at approx 8pm.......the doctor left saying he would see me in the morning around 9am & will break my waters then if needed. I was in a small country hosp so he went home to bed, the midwife also was not there. Unfortunately for them they had to get out of bed LOL as about an hr after the gel I went into labour & was 6cm by 1am. As it moved along they had to break my waters as it hadn't happened & I wanted to push!!! I think it was the only time in my labour that I screamed at the top of my lungs, there was a huge gush & it was such a relief!!! Charlie was born at 5.23am (he,he no way he was waiting til 9am the next morn)......after an hour or more of pushing due to his head facing my leg - that was the worse part, each gush with each push just felt gross.
-
I had been having contractions from about 11pm - pretty irregular and more like mild stomach cramps - they got more regular and stronger about 3am - at 5 am got up off the sofa(hadn't been able to sleep in bed cos I was too restless and didn't want to disturb DH too much) to go to the toilet and had a huge gush on the lounge floor - DS Jackson was born 10 hours later

My waters broke at 230 in the morning of my 39th week(we had DTD that night in the hope it would bring labour on- guess that worked). I had been having contractions from 26weeks and had been in and out of hospital, so I was about ready to pull my son out myself!
I was sleeping in the spare bed so hubby could get some sleep. I woke up and felt a sort of soft pop, so I got up and started walking to the toilet, that's when I felt it leaking down my legs. There was no doubt in my mind as to what was going on. I was wearing PJ pants, so they caught most of it. I got to the toilet and sat down as more came out.
We rang the hospital and I had to come in straight away. The doctors had ordered that I was to come in the moment they broke - contractions or not. I was very calm. Even made sandwiches for my husband to eat during the labour:) The contrations started during the ride to the hospital - this was now about one hour after my waters broke. They stopped again at 1030am, and they asked if I wanted a drip to bring them back. That was a definate as I was determined to have bubs that day. After a painful labour and two hours of pushing he was born at 953pm. Hubby then proceeded to tell me how exhausted he was - could have smacked him if I had the energy!
-
I could feel the membranes bulging in front of DDs head, even underwater. I pushed again and they popped, then she followed.
-
My waters broke about 30mins before my first contraction
-
I don't know. I never felt them go and didn't feel any wetness but the midwife said they had broken before I got to the hospital. I was wearing a bad as I had a lot of bloody mucous so maybe they trickled into the pad and I never felt them? There was a lot of fluid/blood/muck which followed Oliver so I can only guess his head was blocking the exit and holding most of it in.
-
Mine broke driving home from yoga, was a very interesting 15 min drive, accelerate/brake, waters gushing each time, contractions didn't start until 45 minutes later.
-
For DD1 I was in the bath, my waters were bulging out in front of her head and the MW broke them. they had menconium so I pushed her out as fast as I could, she was born not long after that.
For DD2 I was exhausted and ready for an Epi at 5cms and the MW suggested ARM to see if that would move things along. The waters were also stained with menconium and she was born within 5 minutes.
Hopefully #3 will be able to break naturally or be born in the sac. I wish I had told them to leave the waters with DD1
-
My waters broke roughly 12 hours after contractions started.
By this stage ctx were about 3 mins apart.
DS was born 6 1/2 hours later.
DF was massaging my sacral area as I had a lot of back pain and I felt it pop - totally unreal sensation - I honestly thought I was about to get the runs, so when I sat up and water went everywhere I realised why.
-
I was sitting in bed at 1am with my hands on my belly trying to feel some kicks when I felt a pop. I knew immediatly what it was, and being as large as I was with Noah in the end I screamed at DP to move then I jumped and stood on the bed and jumped off the other side and I raced to the bathroom for the safety of the tiled floor. Who knew a pregnant woman could move like that! Contractions were odd and not very regular. Had to be induced the day after next. Oh happy times
-
I was sitting on the couch watching daytime tv at 38 +2 days. I felt this pop and a slight gush...thought i had wet myself, jumped up (freaking the dog out...she hadnt seen me move that fast in quite some time!) and it just kept gushing. ran to the loo, freaked out (DH was 5 hours or so away in another town). then rang the hospy and had to get a friend to drive me...
contractions started 6 hours later. and came on hard and fast (2 minutes apart). 9 1/2 hour labour....
-
DS1 waters broke at home i had no clue thought i had wet myself it was 11.30pm my mum rang the hospital and asked if it could be the waters and they said come in and get checked got ther at 12.30am and sure enough it was but not labour pains at all and as this was 17 years ago if labour didnt start within 12 hours you got induced ,they let me hold out till 3.30pm and then on went the drip and he was born 4 hours later.
DD1 ARM as i was being induced due to being over due
DD2 waters broke at home in the longeroom again and the first 2 kids were laughing at me saying look mummy wet her pants ,once agin no labour till i was induced the following day
DD3 waters didnt brake till her head was comming out even though this was my forth baby i kept yelling at them that i didnt want to have a baby still in is water bag i thought i would give birth to the bag still intact with the baby inside lol
DD4 ARM as i was 15 days over due then on with the drip
DS2 ARM the doctor wanted to get my labour going as this bub was breech and i was 8 days overdue and they thought he was going to be huge (i had some big babys) so he broke my waters thinking i would just go into labour no such luck drip went on 8 hours later and he was born 4 hours and 43 mins later.
-
My waters broke at 7pm while I was sitting on the toilet 6 days befoe my EDD. DH looked scared and frightened as he rushed off to get me a pad and then more scared after I got up (with pad) and the fluid rushed down my legs and all over the floor!
Labour didn't start. Induction via synto was started at 7am and labouor started at about 10am. I failed to progress past 1.5cm despite labouring all day and Luke was born via c-section at 10.48pm that evening.
-
I woke up at 2.30 am as I needed to go to the toilet. I was 4 days overdue. While I was in there I realised it wasn't wee as it wouldn't stop & I couldn't control it. I yelled out to DP that I think my waters had broken. He was so excited. He couldn't do enough for me. When I got my next contraction & I leaked again I knew it had to be my waters. I couldn't go back to sleep - I was to excited & uncomfortable, each time I had a contraction I leaked some more. I had towels everywhere - didn't think about a pad until the hospital told me . I went to the hospital about 8 am & they confirmed my waters had broken. DS came via the emergency exit at 9.35 pm that night.
-
With DS, contractions started at 2.20pm Saturday afternoon. Went to the hospital at 5.30pm. Had a show and then urges to push at about 1am, waters were broken by midwife using ARM. DS was born 20 mins later.
-
I couldn't answer the poll as mine didn't break at all.
-
Very cool ren, what a lucky boy :)
-
DD1 - went to bed around 11.30 at 41 weeks. Woke up at 12.30 to a wet patch on the bed. I woke DH up & he rolled over, spotted the wet patch & said - You wet the bed you dirty b*tch - Not in a degrading way. Anyway I told him I thought my waters had broken & he jumped up real quick! My contractions didn't start til about an hour later. It was only a small leak that time.
DD2 - Had to be broken & was done about 5 minutes before she was born.
DS - had contractions for a bit over an hour when my waters broke. I felt the 'pop' this time. It wasn't a gush, but it kept running down my legs, & pads weren't lasting long. My whole labour only lasted 5 hours.
-
DS1- waters ruptured by themseleves at 32weeks5days. It took me several days and lots of leaks to figure out i wasn't incompetant and to go to hospital. Luckily i never got an infection within that time frame, was admited at 33weeks with mild contractions. They stopped and then started again at 33weeks3days and couldnt be stopped. The leaking never turned into a gush and end up with an emerg c/s so not sure that they actually ever broke or just remained ruptured.
DS2- waters ruptured again by themseleves at 38weeks more fluid then with DS1. due to prior c/s went straight to hosp with mild contractions which once again stopped. continued to leak for a further 2 days however again not sure they ever fully broke. i end up having a c/s with his also
my waters must be the thing that goes first when my body thinks its had enough and springs a leak!
-
With DS my waters sprung-a-leak about an hour after us DTD, i remember being down the street on a Saturday morning and thinking is this left overs or am i wetting myself. Got no pains all day but in the late arvo i started feeling a bit weird and thought something might be happening, went to bed at about 11:00pm and woke at 4:00am with definate labour contractions, got up and had a bath and by 6:00am i woke DP to tell him i was in labour and we went to the hospital at 9:00 only because my waters had broke the previous day and the risk of infection. I continued on all day in hospital with strong contractions until 3:00pm when i finally had my show and was declared to be in establised labour....woohoo 3cm dilated!
-
My waters broke with DS after about 10hrs of labour. My ob was doing a internal and then a couple of seconds later it happened...all over his tie. (That should teach him for putting his hand in there!) After that DS was born 2 hours later.
