Breastfeeding when pregnant Chatter Thread

well, i am here again. i was tandem feeding (just) when this pregnancy began, but i think i can now call DD weaned. DS has cut down his feeds enormously, and is not as restful at the breast. I don't know if he will make it to the end, and i am not sure how much i want to keep encouraging him if he does look like weaning early. Tandem feeding worked for us, i really don't think DD was ready to finish earlier, but i also don't know if i want to do it all again.

My boobs aren't sore like i remembered last time, but i really dislike any fiddling or messing about. My supply has definitely dropped, and pumping leads to very little milk. Thankfully, i don't need to rely on ebm, and so DS will just have to deal with water and solids if i am not there. He is intolerant to dairy, which does make it a bit trickier. Feeding to sleep is rare since the pregnancy, but he is now pretty good at cuddling to sleep, at least at night.

Good on you HotI you've done so well. Yep I weaned DS because of drop in supply. As much as I advocate tandem feeding, I'm not keen to do it again.

It's starting to get quite painful/uncomfortable (I'm 21 weeks). DS is wanting to feed allll night...I could just cry.

DD only gets to the count of ten (and mummy counts very fast at times) and tonight she told me "it's alright mummy your boobies be ok mummy" and gave me a big hug

Dd still wants to feed, but I don't think it's as satisfying for her anymore. She doesn't seem to go to sleep at the breast as much now. Would my supply have dropped of now? I'm 14 weeks.

Feeling so tired and weak. Is that because of the combination of the both??

Jumping in here. Have only recently found out I'm pregnant (so I'm guessing only 5-6 weeks) but feeding is becoming really painful already. I was hoping to continue feeding for a while yet but I'm guessing its only going to get more painful??
I've noticed I'm constantly starving. All. The. Time!! I'm guessing because of doing two things at once.

I found it painful at first, then got better, and has become a bit sensitive again. I assume it will come and go? Someone further along may know more :)

I found I'm more hungry AND super tired too :)

Ladybug I found that the pain comes and goes, but feeding the older of my two is always more uncomfortable. dD is great though and will hop off when I start counting. She tell me now "nuffing coming out mummy" or "yay milk is coming out today" haha

He might have a feed during the day, but it usually only lasts a minute or two, and then will have one or two over night. He doesn't fall asleep at the breast anymore, except over night but then he sort of rolls away and falls asleep. He also will ask for water after a feed, which makes me wonder if the milk is more concentrated so he is not getting his thirst addressed.

He has had a dairy intolerance, so i haven't been able to supplement with cow milk, like i did with DD. It looks like he is becoming more tolerant with age though, and can handle small amounts of dairy now. I am a little concerned about calcium intake and going to look into alternatives, especially if he cuts out any more feeds.

Last night my DD stayed at my Mum's, and so it was just DS and i at home. We had dinner at Mum's so got home late, and i transferred a sleeping DS to his bed. He slept all night!! and when he wandered out this morning, he crawled into my lap and had a good feed. He then wiggled up and then swapped sides. It has been weeks (months?) since he has done this, and he also rarely takes both sides. It was really really nice, he even giggled at me while feeding, and if he does wean soon ish, i'm glad we had this morning to look back on.

Sneaking in... I thought I'd continue some of my musings from the breastfeeding beyond 12 months in a more specific thread. So as I've noted elsewhere, DD is pretty much on a total right breast strike and will only have a tiny bit from my left side. I'm only newly pregnant but in hindsight her striking was the first symptom of this pregnancy. But now I noticed that the left side, the side she WILL drink a little from, is much more tender than the right side. The right nipple is hardly tender, the left is super tender. The left breast even feels bigger and fuller. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Pain sensitivity of nipples/breasts I find change throughout pregnancy. I found in early pregnancy that my supply actually increased but then dropped with about 20weeks being when it has the biggest dip in supply. My kids don't seem to be bothered and actually want to feed more when I'm pregnant.

I'm just imagining grotesquely mis-matched boobs. One Barbie boob and one Ken doll man boob.

argh, not enjoying bfeeding today. avoided it all day. ds has a feed before feed, but i could only handle it for a short period. tried swapping sides but that didn't help. in the end just had to take him off and give him cuddles. thankfully, he was pretty tired and didn't take too long but it still sucks.

the nighttime lying down feeds (usually one/night) are ok, but the rest usually suck. i can't handle it if ds moves his head at all, and i have to hold the breast so there is very little movement. Also, can't handle him touching me anywhere (except my hands) while feeding. poor kid, it's not his fault.

I can NOT feed Amelia on the left at the moment, and she's gotta be in the exact right position to be on the right. On the left it's suddenly giving me the absolute creeps and I want to push her away :( On the right it's just a pain thing, she's been a bit rough lately and it only feels right if we're in a certain position.

The baby's been booting her if we're tightly belly-to-belly, so we're both getting a giggle from that :p

Teni, that's kinda where i am at the moment. creepy, yucky feeling. i've been through it with DD, but it is still so confronting to feel such horrible feelings when feeding has been such a good thing.

very cool that Pudding is giving A some kicks. i have an anterior placenta, so not sure if DS will get to feel it (if we last that long).

Oh yes get you on the horrible uncomfortable feeling, I feel bad for yelling get off at times. I find it harder with DD than DS. And yes also can't stand ANY touching of chest area. I get these feelings when not pregnant but they are hugely intensified when pregnant and sometimes I end up just crying.

My left nipple is still the only sore one... Unfortunately for me this also the only side DD will feed from at the moment. She also has a cold and last night for the first time since she was tiny she bit me on that sore nipple ... Twice! Yow!!!

I'm past the sore nipples I had for a few weeks. Def still getting milk, no colostrum yet. Hopefully this continues for a while.

For those who've BTDT, when did it change to colostrum?

I found the transition of milk to colostrum slow as in it was a gradual change and then became a milky version of colostrum. But then didn't go to complete colostrum until Bub was born. This time 25 weeks and still very milk like here :)

Colustrum started later for me, like thirty something weeks. Like eenee said it transitioned for a bit. I noticed it because dds poos changed consistency.

I admire you all breastfeeding while pg. I did it with dd but ds was such an intense feeder I had to finish, and he was over 2 so I figured he was ok.

Ds still touches my boobs and I freaking hate it! Creepy crawly feelings for sure!

Oh good. DD2 got a place at preschool next yr for one day a week - not keen on weaning her and exposing her to all those germs when her new sister will literally arrive a week before!

that is one of the big reasons why i am unsure about just weaning DS now. It was handy having DD breastfeeding when she started kindy this year.

My milk didn't change to colostrum till around the week DD2 came. You'll know it changes, the movements are pretty horrific lol. DD1 didn't seem fussed by the difference at all but some kids are.

I'm wanting to keep up the one feed with DD too for immune reasons. Not sure if one pretty average feed would be enough for mama milk goodness though. Another strike tonight. She just likes to look at them and touch my nipples and talk to them!

i have mega breastfeeding aversion atm. ds is also on keen once a day or so. so it kinda works out.

a major trigger is ds moving his head while feeding, and so feeding while dd is around or anybody else is pretty tough.

so, DS is tired tonight and so i gave him early dinner and bath. dh and dd head out to pick up dinner for the 3 of us, and my plan is to get LO to sleep. get everything ready and he crawls on to my lap and he is having a really nice feed for the first time in weeks. Then bloody dhh (and the first dh are not dear husband tonght) rings my mobile which is across the other side of the room, and then the house phone. DS and i sit down again and i try to feed him on same side. can't do it, and take him off. swap sides hoping that will be better. nup, can't handle it and have to take him off. so now DS is hyper again and will be probably up to stupid o clock.

argh pregnancy is just ****house.

ETA - now i am crying. blah blah. this sucks

:hug: Hot1. I am not enjoying bfing atm either. Frankly, if anyone asked me whether they should TTC before or after weaning, I'd recommend after. *sigh* The only thing that keeps me going is thinking of after DD3 is born. Then I won't mind bfing DD2 again.

So know the feeling, and DS still feeds most of the night so I end up sitting up feeding him and crying. :hug:

DD is still feeding also twice a day, DS I lose count of the amount of feeds he has.

Sore throat + reflux/heartburn that gets worse when laying on my right side + Breastfeeding aversion to every position OTHER THAN laying on my right side = miserable Teni :( I'm in so much pain, and Milly's not helping :cry:

I only just noticed this thread existed. I'm 11 weeks pregnant and still breastfeeding DD 13 months. Probably 2-3 daytime feeds plus countless nighttime ones. DH and I have just started trying to gradually wean the night feeds but its going to be a slow process

Ah, Teni. :hug: I'm not having a bad week this week, but still not loving it. On the plus side, DD1 has a virus with a sore throat (unusual for her, she's rarely sick). We've all got a touch but DD2 is the least affected. Good reminder of why I'm still bfing.

Well, after DS not feeding for close to 2 weeks, yesterday he was on my lap and asked for a feed. I'm not sure how much milk he got, hopefully a bit of an immune boost anyway, and he then fell asleep. Nothing today, but it's nice to know the door may not be closed fully yet.

Hotl, DD is the same. Hasn't fed for two weeks and now my milk is creamy and yellowy. Hasn't asked at all.

I think DD2 is going off her midday before nap bf. today she latched on, came straight off and cried. I got her back, but I think my supply is dropping again. I wouldn't be sorry to lose that bf, since DD1 dropped it before now, but I'm worried it's going to impact my supply a lot more than usual.

I am hoping that if it doesn't happen for a little while then it's close enough to DD3's birth that she might come back to it. I'm only a few weeks off the third tri, after all.

Well, here I am again, breastfeeding while pregnant.

Last time I was worried about my DS weaning when I was pregnant with DD. Now I'm really, really hoping this pregnancy will cause DD to wean on her own. I'm already pretty over feeding her (she is very demanding about it), I can imagine pregnancy is only going to make it more difficult and less enjoyable.

Welcome, Sterla. I had a drop in supply and that cut back DD2's bfs. If she was another year older, I probably would have encouraged weaning, I have NOT enjoyed bfing while pg.

Hopefully, your DD will at least demand it less.

DD is a whole year older than DS was when I was still feeding him and fell pregnant. That year makes a big difference. I wasn't ready for DS to wean, but being that DD is so much older, I definitely am. I had breastfeeding aversion when feeding DS while pregnant with DD. It was awful. Toe-curling, teeth gritting awful. I'm really hoping DD cuts back significantly, or weans.

Still, I want to remind myself to attempt to enjoy these possible last few weeks/months of feeding DD, and hold onto her being my baby for a little bit longer.

Milk has officially changed and it is now just watery. I assume colostrum will kick in very soon. Doesn't seem to be bothering DD2, but I think 39 weeks was the changing point for us.

I assume this probably means baby is not far away!

Wow, you've done amazing to feed through your whole pregnancy! Well done!

I have started cutting DD back again. I'm basically trying to not feed her at all through the day (unless she is desperate for it), and just feed her to sleep at night and a few times through the night. Going okay so far. She doesn't necessarily have to wean, but I'd be happy for her to be only on one or two feeds in a day. I'd also be okay with her weaning though ;)
