Nestle launches first innovative (!!) complete feeding system for babies

Surely the amount this machine costs combined with the huge cost the formula must be in all those individual containers would be enough to pay for good lactation support or a killer electric double pump.

This gadget is really for the "I didn't want to breastfeed" market so they can't be getting up in arms about comments on the inferiority of formula.

If I was formula feeding and didn't give a crap about the environment I'd love this. I'm too lazy and forgetful to get boiled water to the right temp and not get distracted with scooping formula. This thing almost makes it as easy as BFing (apart from the cleaning, shopping, overnight feeds and being away from the house).

Do you really think that all women out there in the world understand that breast is best though? especially when they have companies like Nestle trying to shove down their throats the benefits of formula?

I agree the marketing is full on Ginger and unfortunately in third world countries no, the message is sadly not getting through. It isn't getting through here to a certain extent either, but I very strongly believe that in a country such as ours it is OUR responsibility to do research in whatever it is that relates to our children and therefore make our own informed decision, and not simply follow advertising trends.

i agree with you LuLuHb, but i just don't think enough mums do research it. I think it makes it hard when you see ads on tv for toddler formulas telling you about special ingrediants that increase eye sight? wtf?

Danniim - I dont take offence, no stress! Please do say whatever you think/feel.

Put it this way - my first birth I ended up in a syntocinon drip half way and yelling for an epidural. Someone could say, "Those of you who have syntocinon or epidurals are idiots, you have no idea what you're doing to your baby, you could have killed your baby," etc etc. This would no doubt spark off a war amongst some (when it's this person's issue that they feel that way, not my issue to take on), but for me (and the others who felt so), we'd be like, 'That's just your opinion love. Did what I knew/could do'. It all depends on how you feel about yourself as to what you react with. Those who are feeling low, down and terrible will no doubt trigger anger and fight back the hardest. Those of us who didn't feel that way would just not participate and think its just an opinion based on their experiences. We don't get tied in and addicted to the fight, because we don't have one going on in our hearts. Defence is always the first act of war.

I think when we're stretched or pushed we have the greatest opportunity to grow than if we cruise and stay the same. Overcoming attachment to painful feelings is awesome and only adds to your confidence and self-esteem. I always use delicate language, I have never attacked a person, told a person they are stupid, or made a terrible choice, in my 8.5 years in publishing this site. But I do choose to expose things which I believe we should be aware of, so women and their men can be more informed, educated and make decisions and choices based on both sides of the fence, just like the person who blew the whistle on smoking - thank god for them. He didnt want to make smokers feel bad, but felt compelled enough to make sure the public knew as it would effect their health. Difference is, many women tie their self esteem into motherhood and being a 'good mother' so something so little can sometimes trigger us if we don't feel good about who we are or the job we're doing - then we react with even more resistance and anger and blame others.

I would assume many formula feeders would see this machine and go, 'Wow, cool, I want one!' and I have seen it already on FB. To be able to see hidden meanings behind these marketing decisions can only increase your awareness and help open your mind even more, without attaching your own feelings to it. BB is based on this - informing, educating and empowering. Not a fluff site that talks about cool new trends and gizmos... but the ethical, intellectual and 'guts' behind what we see. Yes that will trigger some people. But I am not doing it with any malice.

Agreed! Pity its c*** though. I'd happily drink that formula if I thought I could throw my glasses away ;)

Ginger - thats why BB is here.... to help point it out, what you're not being told, what you might not think about etc etc.

It seems my kids and myself are already doomed to get cancer from FF apparently. It's such a pity to think that because I inherited a gene that made me unable to produce milk I've ruined my childrens lives. I guess when it happens it won't be a surprise. I wonder if I can be jailed for it?

Anyway back to the topic. I'd buy one of those machines and I don't care who made it.

I am gobsmacked by this. How it can be safe to properly heat the water to kill the bacteria in formula, then cool it to a safe temperature for baby, in one minute is beyond me. I hope nobody dies before this is removed from sale, or at least amended so it is safe.

I think making the comment that FF results in a higher rate of leukaemia in children is pretty much guaranteed to make FF mums feel pretty bad Kelly!

I don't have a problem with it but hey, I'm one of "those" mums. I have a coffee machine - not because I'm lazy (frankly, it takes a lot more effort to make it, clean the machine etc than it does to boil the kettle) but because the coffee tastes better. I had a $1,000 pram because in my opinion it was easier to use and more comfortable for my child.

I don't understand why there can be any number of things out there in the form of counselling, introducing legislation, pillows, clothing blah blah blah to make breastfeeding easier, and all those things are applauded, but when something is marketed (whether a gimmick or not) that may make FF easier for those of us that FF it gets jumped on. We are educated women, and we all accept that breastfeeding is best. Some of us just can't do it.

I was lucky enough to sail through breastfeeding... BUT

If I couldnt have, for whatever reason ....

I would buy one. Anything that makes it easier, I am all for it.

It is unfortunate that Nestle makes it though. I am sure it wouldn't be as offensive to some if a different company made it.

Disappointing at the way this topic was introduced.

Not all of us have the convenience of a 'working' breast to feed our babies with so why not have a funky machine instead???

I see no problem with it other than it being yet another opportunity for people to ear bash formula feeding mothers on the 'bad' choices they make.

I just read the guidelines and it seems I didn't prepare formula to the WHO standards either :o. So, it doesn't make me care any more or less.

My issue with this machine (as with all "pod" machines) is the waste - imagine how many non-recyclable little pods this machine will produce in its lifetime.

LuluHB - re your comment on how some ff'ers felt offended by my comment. A question: would you prefer to not know about risks of using formula at all? (and as a result, no-one on BB know). How about for our children not to know the risks in case they feel guilty? I think its important when weighing up a decision to do it or not, if you are in a position to make a choice. So many things are messed up in the process when you know that only 1% of women will have a medical reason to not physically be able to breastfeed, and as a country we have very low breastfeeding rates and they drop off quickly with age. Survival as a species wasn't a problem, but we didnt have as much interference as we do now. Thats why it's more important than ever to get educated, informed and learn, just like you would before buying a car or a home - even a dishwasher.

Someone said, its the same to me as buying a dishwasher. If I didn't have a compelling answer then there is no contrast, the rabbit hole goes way deeper.

We need more money invested into breastfeeding, but, no-one will be making money from it, so it will remain a dormant issue which will only get exposure through mothers talking, and people donating money to causes like the ABA.
