I think you should wait a little while too, however I do agree with you that children develop more in a bell curve even with solids. My DD was eating solids at 5 months and yet my son wasn't interested at all until he was nearly 8 months.
Just to follow up:
By 4 months DD was crying to sit on my knee at meal times and then crying in frustration when she wasn't allowed to grab any food. She never cries. So I started giving her some suitable bits while we were eating. She was very happy to chew on a bit of broccoli or bread or fruit. At 4.5 months she can do everything on the checklist: she is sitting unsupported for 5+ minutes, can pick up food and feed herself, gags if she gets too much but swallows most of what she puts in her mouth. I have hauled out the highchair and she has started having a couple of different things to try. I guess the important part of BLS is the baby-led part- she obviously hasn't read any recommendations telling her to wait :)
My paediatrician told me whenever I think he is ready I can start

Good on you for trusting yourself. U don't need a book. Recommendations are great and so is understanding why they are recommended, just so u know why u may not need to follow the recommendation.
Thanks for the update :) Good on you for listening to your baby girl. Whether I agree with it or not, she not my child :)
