I was reading the other day about some tips for babies who's top teeth are causing damage. Apparently a few mums have had success with tilting the baby's head back so that the teeth can't touch the breast. Another way to do this is to hold your baby near the top of his back, and pull his body away from you. Feeding while lying down can help also.
It was also suggested that washing the breast after a feed helps the wound to heal so that the baby's saliva doesn't continue to irritate it after a feed.

I just came back to this thread to re-read the suggestions because my nipples haven't healed yet :(
We're down to one feed a day in the early morning. It still hurts a bit but usually is not as bad as it was before - I think that's because I've had some sleep (often not much!) and so has he so we're both relatively relaxed. He won't let me change his position at all without protesting, pulling my nipple, pulling off and crying etc etc.
Healing bandaids haven't worked but I'm going to try paw paw ointment and breastmilk as I forgot those ones before.

Just thought I'd re-post in this very old thread to celebrate that FINALLY, breastfeeding has stopped hurting :leap: :leap: :leap:
It has only been in the last few days, so it took about 4 months :o My nipples are not quite healed but definitely nearly there and it is such a relief to just feed again without pain. I think they have healed in time for DS to wean :( but that's ok. If he weans now it will be his choice, not mine for short term selfish reasons (my feelings about weaning due to my pain, not comment on what others might do in a similar situation).
I thought I would come back and re-post so anyone else coming along and reading this later would know how it ended and possibly be encouraged that although it might take a while, your nipples will heal again. :hug:

Yay Kaz!!! This is what happened with us too, it took about two months for DD to stop hurting me at age two. :hug: at the possible weaning, what makes you think it's imminent?

He's sometimes not very interested in the early morning feed. Sometimes he is though, & will drink from both sides and seems to have a 'full' feed. Other times he will only have one side, or one side and a tiny suck on the second side. Sometimes he has really short drinks on both sides. He usually then wants/has a full sippy of cows milk (maybe 3/4 cup of milk) afterwards. But he doesn't always have that either (especially when he's had a more 'full' feed). I don't know really. I guess he just seems inconsistent but I know I don't know how much he's really getting in the feeds. It's just a feeling I have that he's very gradually reducing this feed.
