How is your iron levels? Mine were very low during my pregnancy and then even more so after I had a bleed. I lost just over a litre and it took a good 4-5 days for mine to come in.
I still didnt gorge up like I had done with the boys but DH was awesome with making sure I drunk heaps and took iron supplements (I took spiralina tablets with vit c as well) and fenugreek tablets to help.
He was like a walking pharmacist in those first weeks. :clap:
You are doing so well and I know it is damn hard when there doesnt seem to be anything there. If you want to give her a top up then do it. It does not mean that you have given up or failed.
I was stubborn and was scared like you that I would completely stop if I gave in to a bottle but if anything it made me more determined to breastfeed.
Now nearly 13 months later she is still breastfed and wont take a bottle :o
The bleed could be a reason but it also could be because it's your 4th bub too. By the time I had my 4th (after which I also had a 1.5lt PPH), my milk came in a lot "quieter" than my others. By that I mean that my breasts weren't as hard or as big as they had been before so I was kinda worried. With my 3rd I was also less engorged than the first 2 bubbas too.
After my PPH mine never came...no leaks, no engorgement, no pain, nothing. I didn't see DD until 3 days old though (as I was in ASCU), and didn't hold her until 4 days so that would have made a major difference. She was a veeerrryyy sleepy feeder so I tried pumping and pumped and pumped to no avail. But as I said, the initial lack of contact with her probably made a difference to that.
Good on you for keeping going, kudos to you! I remember how unwell I felt after my bleed and I def applaud you!

I haven't had a bleed but my milk takes 4-5 days to come in regardless. Day 2 is the worst, all of my babies have been so unhappy then, really really hungry. The boys I topped up with formula. Dd I just let feed for like 8hrs straight whilst guzzling down water myself. It was hell but she brought it in on day 3 that way. Good luck hun, these first few days will be over soon.

As a failed breastfeeder first time around, I hardly feel like it is my place to say anything here, but seeing as you are my friend, I will anyway!
I was under the impression that a paediatrician would be assessing and advising you (daily) on whether or not your bub is getting medically dehydrated or not (very different to hunger). I am not sure how it works in Tassie, but I have already discussed with mine that I will not administer formula unless he advises me to because bub isn't pooing or weeing enough (last time the midwives were pushing me to give him formula 6 hours after birth!). Do you have access to a paed? Perhaps getting a professional opinion on the pooing and weeing may set your mind at ease?

I had a 2 litre pph with ds2 and I think my milk came in on day 4. We were thinking I would have an issue due to the amount of blood I lost but my milk came in easily even though when it came in I was expressing for him as he was in the special care nursery and wasn't allowed to feed at the time. He did feed constantly for the first couple of days and I think that definitely helped my milk come in as exhausting as it was.

Re the weeing and pooing - you are only looking for 1 wee per day of life in the first 5 days. so, on day 1 only 1 wee, day 2 2 wees etc. If there is a poo there will be a wee mixed in there as well - it just all ends up looking/feeling the same

Mel, I lost 900ml, and already had low iron, and my milk came in proper around day 4ish, but she was firmly attached for the first 2-3 days. It felt like all she ever did was feed and sleep - sometimes at the same time. Hang in there xx
How are things today?
Things were rough last night, I finally went to bed and passed out at 1.30am and I had been up for 24 hours with no sleep, and only a few hours sleep in the 24 hours before that.
I was bawling my eyes out at midnight, wishing I had some formula on hand so my baby wouldn't scream or pull off all the time cos I had nothing there to feed her.
HOWEVER - I woke up with milk this morning!!!! :leap: now I can't wait for her to feed cos they hurt lol!!!! She's feeding every 2-2.5 hours. Sometimes just one side then she's knocked out for the count for a few hours. I actually squirted milk before!!!! So exciting!!!!
I could actually succeed at this - 4th time lucky!!!!!!!

Woooo Mel that is awesome news!! :happyforyou: FWIW - my bubs only ever fed one side at a time from about the 2 week mark. My MCHN told me I wouldn't be able to sustain it but I only ever fed both sides one feed about once a week or so! :) Keep it up and REST hun, as much as you can. I knooooowww it is tough but you need to for your health and wellbeing. Kick your feet up even if you can't physically sleep and get the kids to come to you to do stuff. xoxoxoxo
