Latest update - DD has gone back to screaming inconsolably through the day and has only put on 50 grams this week... She now weighs just 4070grams at 9 weeks old :( Beyond devastated. This is so freaking hard right now especially with DH working long hours and a tantrum crazy toilet training 2 year old and no family support... Sorry to be such a downer just have to get it out somewhere as I feel like I'm about to pop :(

Sounds like you're having a pretty rough week! Any friends you can call on for a bit of help?
She's still gaining weight - that's good. Remember you need to average the gains over a 4-5 week period to get a true picture. The gains can vary enormously from week to week. How is she otherwise? You mentioned reflux? How is that going?
Try to make things as easy on yourself as you can to get through the tough times

Take it easy on yourself lovely. Remember what I said about DD3's weight gains ;)

MadB Thankyou, that's something to keep in mind, she could just be having a bad week? She's having a Wonder Week as well as the reflux this week.. The Zantac isn't working anymore, going back to the Doc tomorrow night to discuss options. I'm also going to strip my diet right back to only very breastfeeding friendly things and we're taking her to see a Pediatric Chiropractor this week too.. Hopefully we'll see some results then? I do think this is mostly from her reflux, she's a tiny girl yes but she's now inconsolable when in pain and that's greatly affecting her feeding.. The more I learn about reflux the more I know it's exactly what's going on..

My 3 bubs have all had reflux until they started solids (DD was a chucker & still chuck for a while after solids) if you are looking at diet changes the fist thing I was told to drop was dairy based products (milk, cheese, yogurt, & even egg) as this made my bubs reflux worse- it worked! Well it made them a little happier. Reflux is an awful thing.

Also I don't know how you feel about homeopathics but I gave mine the Brauer Stomach Calm & also the Brauer Colic Relief, it seemed to make a difference to my bubs.

My DS1 had silent reflux AND sever colic at the same time (reflux burning his throat as the acid came up & colic being the wind trapped in his gut) so his first month was a bit of nightmare- until my mum put me onto the Brauer stuff. Also we ended up doing smaller shorter feeds (5 min every 2hrs) just while he was tiny. ( my milk was good supply so he was getting quite a decent amount in 5min)

Does anyone in the family have bad indigestion problems or milk allergies? (mine does)
If it helps they do grow out of it, it just takes awhile. . Oh & I'm sure ABA has support for those BF reflux babies- don't be afraid to ring them for some support as well.

I've just started reading a book - Colic Solved. It's quite interesting so far. If you have time maybe see if you can get a copy from the library?

Are there any allergies/intolerances in your families? Dairy is the most common one. When you say 'breastfeeding friendly foods', what do you mean? Pretty much anything is breastfeeding friendly unless your baby has a particular problem with it. If you are looking at eliminating things, it's a really good idea to talk to a dietician about it. There's an LC in Perth who is a bit of an expert in this field - I think she does phone consults.

I feel your pain, my 4th son has reflux, I have never had a baby with this so it was a real learning curve for me.

I am breastfeeding and like you tried to look at my diet, the only things I have really been avioding is too much garlic and cabbage.

I have been seeing a peadiatric chiro and my Dr put my son on infant gavescon. I just bought this at the chemist you don't need a prescription. I am only giving it to him once a day, I mix it up as directed and then use a syringe to give it to him (he doesn't like it but it works). I have found since using this he is still a chucker, and is only gaining average weight but he isn't screaming in pain anymore. Like you he used to pull off whilst I was feeding and just scream and arch his back. But now he feeds a lot better with no screaming patches.

Good luck with it all I know what you are going through and it is so hard when you know that they are in pain.

I was thinking about you this morning and wondering how you were going, was going to post for an update. Sorry you're having a bad week, sounds like you're doing everything right though. Like Mad said she's still gaining so that's good. Hopefully the chiro can help too :fingerscrossed:

DD was labelled 'Failure to Thrive' at the Dr's yesterday.. That was a massive moment for me. I'm gutted :(

She's been put on Losec now, I have a new thread about trying to figure out her dose as my Dr really had no idea about Losec..

Thinking about trying the Gaviscon and/or Mylanta as well, have some research to do first..

The Dr said we only have a couple of weeks up our sleeve to give the Losec and breastfeeding combination a chance before we have to take more 'drastic' measures as her weight gain is nowhere near satisfactory and she's going to become quite ill if we don't fix it very soon.

I'm just shattered. Doing everything I can, so emotional, so stressed and just want my little girl pain free and eating properly. Please pleeeeeeeeeease let the Losec work!!!

Oh! No allergies or intolerances in either of our families but if the Losec doesn't work, that's my next avenue if inquiry..

Also going to book in a visit with an Osteo for her ASAP too.. I've heard they can really help Reflux babies and it can't hurt to try!!

Can you call in a paediatrician or a specialist lactation consultant now, rather than wait a couple of weeks for things to become more difficult?

Big hugs my love. I know how upset you are - its quite challenging this reflux stuff isn't it!! I don't know if any of this will help, but here's what we did. We had 2 babies with SR - Kelts and Sahti. Kelti we took to a paed chiro on the sunshine coast, Scott Baker, he is awesome. If you feel like a drive to the coast I strongly recommend him. We also took her to the Meher Clinic (on the sunny coast obviously) and they prescribed some medicine for her (homeopathic stuff). That combined was enough to make her better, however, she still fed every 2 hours and wouldn't take more than 50ml per feed - she was formula fed. So she was pretty slow to gain weight too, however nothing was ever said to me about FTT with her. (I believe because she was formula fed, not breast fed).

With Sahti we had the option of putting her on infant gaviscon, but we had Eden on that (she had normal chucky reflux same as aricyn) and the paed from the hospital said no WAY would he ever put a baby on that, the salt levels are wayyyy too high for a baby. So we didn't put Sahti on that, rather we went down the Zantac way. She fed every 2 hours for a good 6 months though? And as you know - she is only 8.2kg at nearly 11 months, so she hasn't gained a lot of weight either - her average is 50g a week. Some weeks she didn't gain any. Some weeks she gained 100. I'm sure she would have been labelled that as well if I was taking her to get check ups, but she is happy and healthy, and weeing and pooing fine, and she was putting on weight, so I guessed she was the same as Kelti - just slow to gain weight.

Mrs NB, I was advised by my Dr to use Infant Gaviscon, I just went with it as I have never had a reflux baby. Must say I have stopped using it as he appears to have improved. Can you just by Zantac for infants over the counter or do you need a prescription?

I am really concerned now about using the Gaviscon
