We moved from the Central Coast in NSW to Melbourne 4.5 years ago. My work closed the office in Sydney and I was offered a position in Melb so we decided (in 1 week!:o ) to pack up and go.
I had lived on the Coast for my entire life, as did my parents and grandparents, so most of my family and all of my friends live there.
We also knew nothinh about Melbourne. I'd visited once before for a weekend, DH had never been.
Adjusting was really hard for me. For the first few months I went between excitement at the challenge of starting anew to homesick for anything familiar - I used to dream about going to my old local shopping centre LOL. I definitely agree with Curly and Marydean! The 6 month mark was when I had a wobbly and felt like packing up lol.
Thankfully we had 5 other people from my work move down with us and even though they were all a few years younger than us we all became good friends and meet up at least once per month. We've also made some new friends though both of our jobs and DH's gaming hobby. Usually we just stick together. It's certainly made our relationship very strong because we've only had each other to rely on.
We try to go back and visit at least once per year although we don't like to because we have so many people to visit we come home more tired than when we left!! We constantly have friends and family coming to stay us which I love even more than going back ;)
Some things have been really hard. My grandmother became really sick and because of delays with flights (a bird flew in to the engine of my plane - can you believe it?!) I missed saying goodbye to her before she passed. That was really difficult for me and made me question living so far away.
Overall, I'm really glad we made the move. I don't think we will ever move back there! We might go further south though... it's getting too hot here ;)
