If he does end up needing an aide he will be MUCH better supported in the public system. I have just learnt this the hard way. In any case I'd be jumping on the therapist path as soon as you can. If he is having trouble finding the right words they will be able to pick up why and help him through and pave the way for a good school experience.:

I agree about the public system with aide time being more likely but it is becomming extremely difficult to get aide time, although this might only be in NSW.
To give you an idea of the level of teacher's aide hours that are received by children in my year 2 class
Child A - Downs syndrome gets 11hours per week
Child B - Asperges/Autism, ADDHD and ODD gets 10 hours per week
Last year I taught a child who was a selective mute. He receives 1 hour per week.
The year before I taught a kindergarten child who had receptive and expressive language disorder. He received NO funding even though he had been diagnosed.
The advice I can give you after teaching a child with a language processing disorder is to
1. Have his language skills assessed by a speech pathologist (speech therapist). Do it as soon as possible so he can get as much help as he can.
2. Get a complete hearing and auditory processing test done
3. Test for learning difficulties
4. Assessments of cognitive function (thinking and intelligence).
The treatment that he gets will depend on how serverely he is affected by the disorder. He might have group sessions with a speech pathologist
individual therapy sessions with a speech pathologist, school-based language intervention programs, assistance from special education teachers
Teacher’s aide support (for children with severe language disorders), speech pathology sessions with programs that you can do at home with your child.

Guci - we have a child in my centre with speech issues - he has been assessed by the state school and us filling out various tests, etc. This child will now attend a special ed centre one day a week for the remainder of the year to get him ready for prep next year. It is an early intervention thing to help children get ready for school. I am suprised your C&K doesn't know of this scheme - it is all govt funded as far as I am aware. Something else worth asking about.
just to update.. seen a speech therapist and she said he has a low score for his overall language, especially expressive language, but not low enough to be classed as a disorder (which is great) so we are now going to start some sessions with speech pathologist and she will give me homework to help him practice at home. at this stage hard to say how much he will improve but I pray he catches up with his peers in time for school. I really thought it was something he would out-grow but now realise that he really doesn't have huge conversations with me.. he tries to get out what he wants to say and I have just be doing a good job of interpreting and not realising he should be speaking better?? must be so frustrating for him.. Also had hearing checked and that came up all clear! still don't know what to do about prep at this stage. thanks for everyones help xx
