We have a confirmed case of Chicken Pox at DS2s child care centre (grrrrrrr!).

He's been vacinated against the virus HOWEVER he has had a rather snotty nose and cough that started developing over the weekend.... is this a sign?!

    Please say it isn't.

may just be a cold but no vaccine is 100% and I know of a few children who are vaccinated who got a mild dose of chicken pox

fx for you that its just a cold

    :

I have heard of kids getting a milder dose of Chicken pox if they've been immunised. You don't usually get a cough with the Chicken Pox virus, it's generally just a slight runny nose, headaches, aches and pains and fever.

    :

Yes. You can still catch chicken pox if you are vaccinated however it is likely to be a mild case.
Chicken Pox doesn't generally cause coughing.

Unfortunately yes, when my son went to 4 year old kinder the kids who got it had all been vaccinated. They've been playing around with the vaccine for a while as it wasnt as effective as they hoped.

    :

You can still get chickenpox but a much milder version. It is now recommended that a second dose of the vaccine be given for better protection. It is not on the schedule but my local centre charges $60 for it.

    :

Yes. My 6yo DD had the vaccine but still got chicken pox earlier this year (whilst having a broken arm)

She showed absolutely no symptoms just broke out in spots.

Her case was mild (thankfully) and the spots never oozed and she didn't get very itchy.

    Thank you!

Hopefully it's just a mild cold. My mind is at ease!
