    Upper frenulum tie

Just wondering if anyone has experience with an upper frenulum tie, and particularly if it had to be treated?

Also interested to know if you had breast feeding problems?

It's like a tongue tie but the skin between your top teeth and inner upper lip.

We did. Dd had to get it snipped because it was so low it was creating a gap between her front teeth. Wasn't a big deal, day surgery at the rch.
Ds tore his own when he got it caught on a curtain as he was crawling.

DS2 has 1 but has been getting thinner as time goes on, when he first got teeth was a concern as he had a rather wide gap but seems to have improved over time.

Have had no BF issues and he is still BF at 2 and 1/2.

A friends son had 1 and she always had bad attachment and got pain, she made an appt to get it looked at and her son had a fall and spilt the frenulum himself.

Thanks ladies. Have just noticed one on DS1 (2yo) that actually stops us cleaning his front teeth properly. I think if he fell and it split it would be a big mess, because it is quite wide. Might have a chat to the GP next visit.

I'd never even heard of them until a week ago!

Ditto, DD1s was big enough that when her teeth first came through there was a bit of a bigger gap between the front 2 but over time the frenulum and gap have got smaller over time and I don't even notice it now.

We recently discovered one on DD3. It is causing her top teeth to become crooked and she also can't purse her lips well enough to use a straw. We spoke with a dentist in Sydney who will snip it with a laser for $500. It is expensive but it is also pain free and avoids the need for an operation in hospital. DD3 has been breastfeeding for 18 months and her lip tie has not been an issue; if it had been, we may have noticed it sooner.

    Thanks again ladies.

Lisa - how do they keep the kids still for that? Would you mind pm ing me the dentist's details?

The dentist was not keen to do it and stressed to me that he'd rather wait until DD is older so she can understand what is going on, but he is willing to do it for me if that's what i really want. I have had 2 kids get their tongue ties snipped and I feel it is something that is best done when little before habits start to develop or difficult to fix problems, such as DD's now crooked teeth. I will be holding DD's head for the couple of seconds it takes to be done.
The dentist is Smile Concepts. We're booking DD in this coming week so I'll let you know how we get on.

My DD1 had this. I knew a friend had a child with the same thing so I asked what they had done to treat it. She said her daughter had fallen over and torn it so it wasn't an issue anymore. Of course, I wasn't going to be so careless with my precious child lol, then a week later she fell over and whacked her face on some other child's head and problem solved lmao.

Surprised - I thought I would update. DD3 is getting her lip tie released by laser this Saturday by a dentist here in Newcastle. It is going to cost $180, so much cheaper than the dentist in Sydney. They do tongue tie and lip tie release from days old, so there is no age limit. Like a TT release, it will only take a couple of seconds and is pain free because of the laser.

I'm not sure which area you're in but perhaps google laser dentists or laser dentistry in your area and give some a call.

DD3 had her upper frenulum released today by laser. It was over in a matter of seconds. The dentist said there would be a tiny bit of pain and yes, DD3 cried for about a minute. There was no blood at all and we were in & out of the clinic in about 15 minutes all up. I don't know that it has made much difference as yet. The dentist did say it will now stretch more and pull up in the coming weeks and by the time she gets her adult teeth through, everything will be normal. It only cost $100.
DD3 had a breastfeed straight after getting it done and seemed to be a little confused for a second about her latch, but worked it out and was fine. About 1/2 hr after having it done, she had some lunch and there were no issues at all.

Thanks so much for the update - I'm glad the procedure went well for your little one. How did you go holding her down? DS is very strong and I'd be worried he would wriggle too much.
