anna - yep, I love Magicalls, I have about 30!
Would turning my snap in boosters over to the bamboo side help Em or would it just scratch her? I only have 1 more non synthetic inner and she has just pooed so I have to change her already.
WOEB: Bubble J and Loch Ness Madness cover - Soon to be Cute Tooshie and Loch Ness Madness cover.
ETA: Well considering BB crashed immediately after I posted this and was down for 9 hours I decided to try it. I think the blisters are settling after almost 24 hours with no synthetic fibres on her bits. If they come back while I am doing ti though I might try eliminating wheat because she did have a minor allergic reaction to it when she had her testing, it was only a matter of time before she starts reacting when she eats it.
Hi All!
What can everyone tell me about kissaluvs? I'm eyeing a few on B4B and wondering if I should try to get a few for this bubba! I've heard some of you RAVE about them... are they the bomb for newborns? I don't know much about them!!!
I can't believe I'm still awake - I'm exhausted and intended to go to bed at 9:30pm but got sucked into ER!!
WOHB: BBH bamboo and fleece cover
OK ladies I convinced Dh MCNs need to be bought sooooooo I have TWO questions for you all and then Im starting my buying spree!
#1 - nappies for newborns? My boys were 2.9kgs at birth (2wks early) but chubb up pretty quickly by 4 or 5 weeks so what would I buy as a newborn MCN? I dont want to buy a ton of them and then find they grow fast and fit smalls. How many newborn nappies or small size nappies (used for under 6mths say) did you go through a day?
#2 - how many nappies would I need for each toddler if I only change sposies now say.......5 times a day? I already have 4 bumG os pockets, 3 bamboo bumGs + 1 cover, and 3 peapods. The peapods are a tad bit small though so they may have to go on hold for bub #3.
I can wash everyday and DH is adamant theyll be sposied of a nighttime or if he is babysitting for a long period of time (lol).
Ive got my eye on itti bitti dlish w/ snap-ins and the magic-alls. You watch I'll buy a ton of 10+kg sizes for my two chubbers and the eldest will suddenly toilet train overnight ;)
Before Nina was tt I had her in bbh bamboo fitted, only because she didn't fit into magicalls.
Emily was 3.65kg at birth, and like I said earlier, was only in smalls size nappies for a very short time. Magicalls and fitted nappies was my best friend at that age. I can't remember how many nappy changes I'd go through, probably every 2 hours??
If you're only using them for daytime, then you just need to decide what sort of nappy you want. A fitted (that way it'll fit all boys), or an AIO. With a fitted, you'll need a cover for when you go out, or sleeps. I don't use a cover if when we're just at home.
I have about 50 bbh fitted, about 40 magicalls and about 6-8 itti bittis. That was plenty with both girls in nappies, and I wash every 2nd day.
Hi all,
Hope all are going well! Can you believe it ! Ari whipped off her nappy last last and went to the potty - without me asking - just did it and has been on and off all day to day so i guess we are toilet training? After all my insistence and I had finally given up and bought some more AIO and now she decides she is ready... go figure.
Ali - yes I use the natural fibres only whenever ari has bad nappy rash it clears up beautifully.
teruteru - I love my OSFA. I got sick of buying different sizes with my chubba bubba. I used to move up the snaps whenever I was having issues with them. I sometimes found that on certain days and with different types of nappies I would have to adjust the snaps differently. My BG were the first to move up, my Baby kanga lasted the longest on the smaller settings.
AnnaT - Hi just noticed your another townsvillian! There quite a few of us on here now! I always thought MCN were popular in townsville!
WOHB - wildchild with chocolate maz cover
Ok so just say I used sposies the first 2-4wks til Gage reaches 4+kgs (and he will in that short amount of time lol) then switch to MCNs for daytime usage, the small szes which seem to go from about4-9kgs, how many do you think I would need if I washed every night? I cannot remember how many nappies I was changing at a month or two past birth time with the other two. If I can get smalls that fit to 9kgs, the large ones 10-16kg that I'll buy for the two bigger boys will mean Gage can transition from the smalls to the 10+kg sizes without too much hassle in between and Im not spending $$$ for nappies he wears for a few weeks. Im not sure about the one size nappies as the bumGs I got are ok but seem to be a tad tight on fitting Jett and Rip......decisions decisions!
Anna - you are welcome to come and have a look at my stash, to say I have a lot of different nappies is an understatement. Most mediums will fit from 5-11kg which is the most economical size, although that varies on your kids. I found we needed to move to large at around 9kg whereas other I know have held out over 11kg.
as for how many you'll need we used 5 MCN with terry squares and washed every night. What about prefolds and covers for the first couple of months? With 2 toddlers and a newborn I would say at least 4- 5 nappies for the older two and 10 for the newborn if you wash every night. I think we were down to using 6-8 MCN with Ari by the time she was about 4mth. HTH
Anna - i have another idea for you
trifolds and leg gusset covers for birth to 7kg (the runny poo stage)
then size 2 pockets/ai2's for 7 - 16kg
if they're still in nappies after 16kg, then buy the xl nappies then
you don't have to buy nb and small sized nappies, you can do the trifold and cover trick. of course the nb / sm nappies are so cute and gorgeous, but not essential. You could use the trifolds as your "workhorse nappy" and just buy a few nb/sm fitteds (to start with). it's once the baby arrives, you are actually USING stuff on them, you work out quick smart, what you like the best, what works the best for you and your bub.
trifolds dry faster than fitteds too btw. it's just two layers of bamboo. fold into three, you get SIX layers ready for bubs to wee thru.
trifolds are great, they ARE the nappy at nb/small stage.
after that stage, they become the stuffer for pocket nappies, the boosters for night nappies, so you never stop using them - great value.
Leg gusset covers can be pricey, but so worth it, considering the amount of washing they save you.
teturu - i would make the same suggestion to you
about your bumgenius - i assume you have the OSFA pocket style? which insert are you using? the big microfibre one? or the newborn microfibre one?
every bubba wets differently, your lovely little Dragon may need a bamboo insert by now, if he's outwetting the large microfibre insert that BG's come with. A greenkids bamboo insert, or a bamboo trifold (folded in three) would give you more absorbency. Have you tried stuffing the BG with anythign like that?
my bub needed six layers of bamboo at that stage - so it doesn't sound unusual to me. other people have very light wetters, so it's really a matter of MATCHING your child's wetting ability, to the amount of layers and type of fabric that will absorb what it needs to absorb - say for two hours tops.
Anna - the difference between day and night nappies
number of LAYERS of absorbent fabric
a day nappy - has to last for two hours say - maybe six - eight layers of absorbent fabric
a night nappy - has to last for up to 12 hours - maybe 12 - 18 layers of absorbent fabric
fabrics like bamboo, are not easy to get (not at Spotlight) and are expensive per metre, so the more fabric in the nappy e.g the night nappy, correspondingly the price goes up.
also, you'll notice that many night time aio and pockets, and night covers, use Malden Mills windpro or 300wt fleece for the OUTER (waterproof layer) of the nappy. once again, like bamboo, this is a specialised MCN fabric, not at spotlight, is expensive by the yard (comes from US). ANd it does work very well.
in day and night nappies, you will see
FITTEDS (need a cover)
POCKETS (no cover, outer is waterproof)
ALL IN ONES (no cover, outer is waterproof)
ALL IN TWOS (no cover, outer is waterproof)
all shine in different circumstances.
some dry faster
some are more absorbent
different closures suit different baby body shapes
some require putting together, some don't
Most of us who have been using MCN for some time, have a variety of these styles in our stash, you use them, when it suits the ocassion.
with a smaller bub, or a light wetter, you can sometimes use a DAY nappy, boosted - to achieve the same result. e.g mandymacs, baby beehind bamboo, cute tooshie bamboo delights. but my bub wet thru all of those in two hours as a tiny thing, so she was not in the camp that COULD use day nappies as a night nappy. they're all different. many things in mcn, you only find out by trying it, observing the results, working with that.
if you wish to try out a variety of styles, to help you decide what to get, some mcn retail sites sell what is termed a MIXED PACKAGE. e.g you pay one price, you get
- one fitted and one cover
- one pocket
- one ai2
etc
so after roadtesting that lot, you can come to your own conclusions about what you like and odn't like - which in turn informs your future buying decisions.
the sites that offer the MIXED PACKAGES include
- nurturenappies
- darlingsdownunder
- baby blossom
- berry baby
- baby softlandings has a OSFA pockets package too (4 diff brands).
and anyone after bamboo prefolds/trifolds, booroi essentials has free post until Dec 20th, look on Nappycino for the discount code for it.
sugarshots on minicutecuture recently had a lovely embroidered xmas mcn stocking, anyone buy some of those? very nice embroidery.
Anna I would suggest using prefolds or flats for the first few weeks with some really good covers with gussets (we used mother ease rikki covers). Because NB are feeding so much, it's easier to change so a prefold or flat changed every feed works well :)
Then I moved on to small itti's and bubblebubs and also OS bum genius. They only lasted Ash until he was a month old but then he was 5kg born, so quite big!!
Now he is 3 months and 8kg and is in large ittis (mediums too but the fit is better in a large) amd m/l wild child, bizy bee, large mirabai... so on the bigger end but he is a big boy!!
In this house we LOVE baby beehinds bamboo and hemp one size fits most. Ashton wore them from birth and they still fit great, absorb wonderfully and are great on his sensitive bum :) He is a big wetter but with the right booster combo he can wear one all night with a pair of woolies! They are great because they REALLY go down to a newborn size setting!
I love the new magicalls too with the pocket! The minky ones are LUSH!
Hope that helped you some :) No need to use disposables. If you go the bbh one size they can be used for the newbie and the others in nappies. Ashton hasn't had anything but cloth on his bum from day one :) His first nappy was an itti (for photo purposes lol)
WOHB: Wild Child day dreamer, longies and some PJ pants (its freezing here)
Anna - my bilby DID wee and poop liek there was no tomorrow in the NEWBORN phase.
- before a feed
- after a feed
- maybe 10 mins after beign changed etc!
so yes, up to 20 changes per day
using prefolds/trifolds + cover made this very do-able
(when i got enough covers, i seriously underestimated how many i woudl need, when i was pregnant, and buying my nb stash).
the thing with using sposies for the nb stage, they don't have leg gussets, you can get shocking leaks with them, so you need to add on, all the washing of
- clothes (baby's and YOURS)
- scrubbing car seats
- scrubbing loungeseats
- washing bedding
you get the picture, cos i'm sure you're aware how FAR explosive, newborn runny poo can go!!!
so for that reason, i actually think the prefolds and covers are LESS work. and more reliable.
I hope that doesn't sound too pushy of me, just wanting you to go into this with your eyes open. Of course, you do what you think is best for your family. I only have one baby, so maybe i'm just being a bit precious. "we all do, what we gotta do, to get thru."
i did wash once a day to keep up. after a hell on wheels c-section (had washing machine raised). i had to go very slow and hold onto the wall, but i managed.
so i needed two day's worth of MCN - cos one day's worth will be in the nappy bucket, then you wash it, i hung it on clothes horse (to avoid pegging) and you need stuff to use while that load is drying. the covers dry very quickly. the prefolds are not too bad, quicker than fitteds. and of course it depends where you live (climate), and what time of year (season).
don't worry, you do and will have loads of questions. we all did and do. most of us have been where you are right now, and prolly asked the same questions! that's the good thing about this group, we can all help each other, having a shared experience base. so don't worry about having too many questions, and no question is a "silly" question.
look on ozclothnappies - this is a website that ends in a ".org" and no "au".
they have an excellent FAQ (frequently asked questions) link, well worth reading, it will help you no end. Join their yahoo group, great resource
look on nappycino - this is a website that ends in the usual ".com.au"
this is a cloth nappies advocacy site, well worth joining
read their Ages and Stages forum - newborn nappying - of interest to you
LOTS of their forums i'm sure you will find relevant
hope this helps!
alioops: i hear u abt the inserts, im the same :) even thou they r interchangeable i still prefer them like with like
anna: the weight isnt really that accurate so just depends on ur bubs build...there might be a chance gage can fit into Sm really soon!! besides using sposies, mebbe consider flats for the 1st little while? they dry much quick & can b used for other things if ur not using them as nappies (i use them as burp cloth :P). As ive only got limited # of MCNs i wash as soon as im low, but i find that i have to use the occasional sposie while waitin for them to dry
Saram: congrats Ari is beginnin TT, pity abt the nappies thou...i'll take them frm u LOL. I'll try adjusting the snaps n see how i go
i bought more nappies!! im gettin 6 GKs, 2 of each type. Theres no bamboo inserts in stock so have to wait til Jan to order them...in the meantime, better find something to stuff them with...cant have them sittin there waitin to be used can we?!!
wohb: lavendar(?) Happy heinys
ETA: lol i took too long to write my post, there were 3 waiting..thx for remindin me abt the other insert, forgot that the one im usin is the NB one (silly me), will give it a try. The other osfms r still alright with the small insert thou :)
you see, Gigi, that's why we love you!! The almighty oracle of nappy knowledge!
We used the Sandman last night for the first time - woohoo! it's wonderful, thanks everyone for the recommendation! Even after only 1 prewash (I'm sooo impatient!) it wasn't even damp on the outside this morning! If I didn't have three wildchild night nappies on order, I'd get another one. Hmmm, maybe I will anyway.... feel free to step in and say, "no NaNa, you don't need it." ......
AnnaT - :yeahthat: what Gigi sez. And missymoo. Prefolds or flats and gusseted covers for the first couple of months, till bubs stops needing to be changed every 5 minutes, will save you a packet. And are very useful long after you're not using them just as nappies.
teru - I never used the NB insert on it's own in the BumGs... it would always slide around and bunch up, and there was no way I could see that little bit of microfibre holding the gallons of wee my kid would produce! So I went straight to using the large ones, and now put both the NB insert and the large ones together a lot of the time.
I can't catch up on 3 pages of posts... but I hope everyone with sick kidlets is doing better now! And that all nappy rash is clearing up. (We got some here today too. DS is teething again, it just doesn't seem to end.)
WOHB: black HH, lotsa penaten and a fleece liner that's definitely ruined now!
Morning ladies!
OMG I dreamed of MCNs last night lol Dh and I had a chat about the whole MCNing the newborn situ and he's all for sposing in the first 4wks then MCNing from there but he is thinking of ease on me adjusting to 3 kids and $$$. He doesnt want me to buy nappies I wont end up using for long BUUUUUUUUUT if these prefolds are usable as boosters too well then I should be right to get my money's worth...........I still dont understand the whole prefold concept though  So my newbie understanding is they are like boosters that fold and you use them with COVERS, like the ones you use with fitteds correct? Im still thinking the sposing for the first few weeks idea is a better one for us as a family and then moving on to one size nappies of some description til he fits the larger ones the other boys wear.
Ive never had explosions with sposies because I always used a cover over them anyway with my newbies  I had some olden day covers from when I was a baby, my mother used sposies and cloth for all us kids. Just seemed normal to cover a sposie to me even though Id get weird looks from people when I went out with my #1.
Either way I can start ordering today cause I need more large nappies for the boys and we got a windfall of unexpected $$$ that are just screaming to be used for MCNs
if ur DH is goin to be doin most of the nappy changing, then mebbe have some sposies on hand...it really depends who's goin to doin the lookin after & washing. We used a mix of sposies, flats & MCNs on bub in the 1st few weeks. MIL only used sposies on bub but she had since left. DP used sposies at 1st cos everythings new to him but he's slowly changin to usin cloth. It didnt really help that we got given a heap of nappies so out of convenience it has been used...
Prefolds: they r pretty much flats but with extra padding in the middle for better absorbency and yes they need a cover
wohb: light blue haute
He will prob nappy change the older ones more but he's more thinking of me having to change a bajillion nappies for 3 kids in those first few weeks when Im going to be tired, even with help. Might just be a better option to sposie the newbie. That said my MIL will be here from end of march to end of april so she'd prob wash no worries and make sure there are enough MCNs to go round.
Im definately going to get the 12-pack of large Bitti Dlish nappies, think the snap-ins are the better option for me as I hate stuffing pockets. Theyve got the front snaps too and not a ton of them either which is helpful with my toddlers. The less to temp opening nappies the better. Plus they dont do snaps yet :) Bonus is they are pretty nappies so I can indulge my girlyness on the boys without embarrassment
My only query for those who use them are - additional boosting? Can you just chuck in a micro pad to boost for extra coverage or must you only use snap ins? ** Ok just checked FAQs on Itti site and they said you can def additional boost but didnt say exactly what you can use.
Still considering the magic-alls.
Just realised I could use my os bG's for the new baby  as 12 Itti Bitti's for the older two will be more than enough seeing as they dont pee as often as a little one. Although we all know I wont stop buying MCNs even when I think I have enough haha
Hi, I'm a VERY slack poster here in BB in the nappy thread
Just popped in and read your posts Anna....CONGRATS too!! I originally bought my BG's for my DD, but I ended up using them on Jake when NB cos they are really versatile. Even when he was tiny I would use them as covers with a prefold inside (cos the OS insets were just too bulky for my liking). They were great cos I used them on the smallest snap setting but then also folded the front down to reduce the rise even more. I found the velco tabs stuck fine to the inner. As a OS nappy i think they are great value. I even use mine with a double booster for DS at night as well and he's almost 5!!
Just my two cents ;)
AnnaT...DEFINATLY buy some BBH bamboo fitteds!!!! they are my faves!! and do great for overnight :D at the moment i have my magicalls... thank god i only have the 3 of them...
I shall be stalking my postie.... i am waiting on the bamboo fitteds from cloth'd up... I blame PP for telling us about them..i bought some :) but they were a great price!! $8 each.
WOJB ~ BBH white magicall
Becstar - thanks :) and yep the bGs are great just very tight fitting for my big chunkers now although Im trialing one on Ripley right now and its still fitting enough to get by. Gage would definately be able to use them and duh ofcourse they can be covers for prefolds, Im such a tool lol Same goes for my peapod pockets.
As for the BBH bamboo fitteds, they need to be used with covers right, and can be worn for day use? Hmm think I have some of them actually.........
Rhoda - no I wasnt but thanks for that I'll give it a go!
yep definatly use them ANY time of the day...
Maz huney..will pop that cover in the post today :D & i hope you are feeling better today!!!!
My boy is still sleeping..he is usually awake by now...its past feed time....
I need to wash nappies!!!! but it is shiat weather outside...
Katones - send your nappies up here, I'll wash them and have them couriered back to you by tonight - its 35deg outside :o
Hmm I think the BBH bamboo fitteds with extra boosters and covers would be perfect for newbie.....they are one size too meaning he can wear them as a newborn and then still wear them up until he fits the large size itti's I get for the other boys. I'll just need a fair few of them, thankgod for my loyalty discount lol I could even test them out on the boys now before Gage arrives to get the hang of it.
Maz, why oh why did you have to take holidays ;) Ive been browsing your FB pics and OMG I want some of your nappies woman!
I'll second or third or whatever the Baby BeeHinds Bamboo and Hemps. I love mine. I use Motherease Rikki covers.
WORB: BerryPlush
WOSB: Tots Bots Cotton/Motherease Rikki
I LOVE Maz's Covers :D They are my FAVES!!!!
I did love my BBH and BBB more when Jake was littler...now he is so squirmy I really struggle to get a BBH on properly and then a cover too. they are still my great back up nappies when I run out of AIOs and pockets. TBH I've moved away from these at night towards my CTBD's....they are so lush :) Plus I find they don't leave so much of a mark around the legs. Anyone else have this with BBH? Jake is by no measure a chubba either.
I have a question for you all now.....I finally got my Lou Lou Nappies I've had on layby since July . Stupid me bought like 6 without even trying one first or asking for opinions. They are a little big at the moment, I got a M which is from 7kg, Jake is still only 7.6kg. Six months ago when I ordered then I thought he's be more than that for sure. They seem a little.....crinkly....in the hidden PUL layer. None of my other nappies are that crinkly.
So anybody used LL nappies??
WOHB: Pookey Pockets fleece stuffed with GK boosters ;)
I think I'll get the hemp BBH fitteds as they dry a bit faster and Im not using MCNs of a night so dont have to worry about extra absorbency. Ah if Nelle likes them then they must be good ;)
Does anyone own one of those Litte Squirt things? Are they worth the $80? Thats my least fave thing of MCNs, the poo's, my boys never do solid poo's always the opposite, so disgusting!
anna - I only use a cover with my bamboo fitted for sleeps and if we're going out. I don't use covers while we're at home. No point as it's too hot.
Have you got any ittis ATM? If you're going to use them, just make sure they're going to fit the boys. Ittis are a slim fit, so if they're anything like Nina, they may not fit.
You'll be very happy with the bamboo fitted.
I have quite a few magicalls, and bamboo fitted for that matter, if you want to try before you buy, let me know and I'll send you a couple to try out. That way you know it's going to work for you. All my magicalls are boy colours so you won't need to worry about putting pink of their butt!
If I had of known you were going to use cloth, I would have saved some of my small covers for you. I sold them all to another BB user a couple of months ago
Dont have any itti's but the slim fit is actually a good idea for the boys as thats where they seem most bulky, through the middle of the nappy, and I think thats what makes them a bit tight around their thighs.
Just trying to look around and see if there are any better deals for the BBH fitteds than on the actually BBH website.
AnnaT SOMETIMES they are available on ebay..i have been on the lookout... and now the coloured ones are as rare as hens teeth!!!
WOJB ~ spunkybutt / maz cover
pity i didnt discover bb before, otherwise i wouldve 2 bbh fitted to sell/swap...just wasnt my cup of tea. but i do have a hemp one if any1 interested :P there was a sell of the fitted a little while back but its finished now...
btw the itti disc only valid til 31st dec
teruteru i would PM you about the BBH hemp but you don't have that function yet....
hehe when do i get that function??
anywyz u can email me teru.teru at ymail dot com
off to hang babys clothes :P
yeah i am FOREVER hanging baby clothes/nappies out :) i am baout to hang another lot out to dry now....
Surely you can PM Katones? You just don't have as big an inbox as Platinum/Life members, think you can only store 10.
Ah yay I got 13 Itti Dlish snap-ins in large with 6 mini booster snap ins - 2 red, 2 lime, 2 chocolate, 2 turquoise, 2 peppermint, 2 rockmelon and a purple for $291.30 + free shipping. I cannot wait for them to come now, Im going to be madly checking the letterbox for the next few weeks
Im also about to buy 13 BBH hemp fitted o/s for $286 on Darlings. Then all I have to do is buy a few more covers and that should cover the older boys for now. Will buy some more of whatever close to when newbie is born and probably after. I could use my BBH boosters in the fitteds right?
Anna - Get the LS!!! $80 is the cheapest I have seen (and I have been looking) Reece plumbing sell it for $130 :o and I have seen it for $95 on another site. I have one on layby that I will be paying off when money from SIL arrives in my account (she is finally making a payment for her car!!)
Do you want to have a look at some nappies? I have a few Fitted, AI2 snapins that i lay another booster in for night use, some prefolds, and some covers. and of course you already know pockets.
Sales are happening from tomorrow. I am going to head off shortly to do a MPM announcement!! Unless Ness beats me to it. But Ness is moving and has not long left to finish packing so I expect that she is offline ;) Some of you will already have the email about it anyway.
Um I think its Itti that has the LS for $80 but you'd get 10% off with the code!
ETA - Right ordered my 13 BBH hemp fitteds from Darlings. Yippee!
yay, its always exciting to get fluffy mail :) i should b gettin mine next week depending whether they receive their shipment
i wash babys clothes every other day, but our clothes dont get a washin for a week!! but thats mainly cos i wash nappies thou.
ETA- this is evil...more nappies to buy!! im not sure whether my subscription to these stores were a great idea LOL.
alioops- does the disc apply with the offer??
nurture nappies had 10% off storewide until last night... and that included the LS, which from memory would be $80 there normally. Less if you get a package of bumGs or whatever. Couldn't get on BB tho! I wouldn't be without mine, and I shudder to think how sposies users get the poop off. urk.
Teru - yep!! and there is free shipping for orders over $50
looks like im off to do more shoppin then LOL
ah all this nappy tlk ..makes ones mouth water
I personally dont like hemp BBH's...they smell to quickly for me and get to stiff and cardboardy.
Anna - im stocking before that date to babe...just having a special release on that date. You can always PM me if you need something ;)
As for NB covers......I know you all go one about Rikki's cause of the gussets...but how many other covers are there that are as good? Dont tot's bots have gussets to? Why are gussets so important?
Im still stick...blahhery to be honest...and It looks like Mateauz has something...he's got the puff eyes and runny poo.....thank god for sewing I tell yas
Hope everyone is better then me :)
WOMB - IB boo aqua fitted and Berry plush cover
