Cloth Nappies # 175

KatieRabbit - ditto to what BG said. You can add boosters to any nappy provided they fit inside without causing leg gape. I just find that easier to do with a pocket that's all.

Shell - I understand the SAHM going broke thing. I don't buy much fluff, but I still shop a lot :redface: DF used to tell me off about it, but now I think he's just accepted it. Hmm being a SAHM also made me fat lol damn those cupboards and fridge being so close all the time.

Fluff - is there anyone at work you can brag to about fluff all day long? Maybe that would help :) I only have one IRL fluff friend so BB is so important to me lol

Katie Rabbit - we have 2 BG AIO and 2 pockets and have never had to boost the AIO (my DD is now 26mth and TT)

CM - that is strange, is the stain still there when it dries or only when wet? I have taken a toothbrush to a few bamboo nappies to get the poop out of the fibres - ahhh when MCN were new and I actually cared about stains :ROFL:

Didn't get to go to Wiggles today as I was sick but DH took her and apparently had a fantastic time and stayed dry for the entire day - so proud of her. *sob sob* my little girl is gorwing up so quickly. Have an awesome stash of barely used nappies (sparkly iishfly, CK, starbunz puppy) to get rid of in a couple of weeks - once I have stopped stroking them :-) will let you know when I am ready to let go.

hi again everyone..been MIA from here for a while!
well I have to say after this weekend myself and DH are extra pleased with our decision to go cloth (using bamboo/hemp prefolds I made with PUL covers). We stayed at a motel last night, weren't enough dry prefolds to take with us so we decided to use some of the sposies ppl gave us atthe baby shower...turns out they were safeway brand...within a few hours poor lil Susie had a nappy rash :( we were SOOO happy to get home and put some cloth on her bum! DH found them harded to use than the prefold/cover combination anyway lol! so am gonna buy some more prefolds (I have fabric to make more but i dont have time atm..will save that for when I make fitteds/pockets when she gets a bit older!). Does anyone have a recommendation for any of the stores online with bamboo prefolds??

I have a question about covers too...with fluffy covers do they work like pul covers in that they dont get wet on the outside so don't wet the clothes??? I assume with wool covers u dont put clothes over them???

Saram - The booster is stained looking both wet and dry. But wasn't before it went into the wash. I'll be looking out to see when you're ready to let go of the stash :)

Mrsc Aussie - fleece, minky/fleece and wool covers use the natural water repellent properties of the fabric to keep the outside dry. I use fleece covers a lot and have never had a leak through the actual cover. Wool I haven't been as sucessful with until I got some hand knitted shorties from SHP. Both can go under clothes but I prefer to show them off ::-):

CM - I have a few of those on my jamtots hemp boosters - not sure what it is but it seems ingrained in the fabric itself, like right down at the weave.

CM- the really scary part is that I am a WAHM too :doh:

But at least when my mind is on work and I am busy, I dont have time to fart about on the 'puter.

It's a sad old world when you start hanging out for 9am to see what nappies are on sale that day. (thanx Mel :rolleyes:)

I just want to brag at how awesome my Nan is!!!!

I was telling her about the Modern Cloth Nappy (being my nan and all she was shocked!) and very impressed and doesn't understand why everone is not using them...."back when i had kids you had no choice but to use the old terry with pins....if we had ones like this when i was young....."

Anyway i told her about the awesome wool shorties and longies and she has knit me one from what i described.....not sure the wool is thick enough but its the thought that counts!

So does anyone know if there is a specific type of wool you need to use? cuz she is loving being a great gran and would go off and make me lots of nice longies for this winter!!!! :D hmm might buy her some Butt Knit Patterns xoxox

but yes i have to curb my enthusiasm around friends so i dont 'bully' them into at least trying cloth im that excited about it atm

Ha, LOL I have no idea which ones are the most absorbent/have the best containment, I am so keen to put a new one on, i rip em off as soon as they get a drop of pee on them.:D Its like playing dollies all over again. (tho Arimeh was quick to remind me-until they crap in them :))

congrats on the success of your home made prefolds - yeh you!

you can use wool covers under clothing.
there are wool wraps machine made (like baby beehinds) and wool covers (like sugarpeas, loveybums), and fit under clothing just fine. They stay waterproof due to the lanolising process (which you do to the woollie, each time the lanolising wears out, e.g each month).

there are wool soakers made by handknitters,(one exception to this, is the wool soaker, machine made by Disana)

• shaped like covers (called soakers often)
• shaped like shorts (called shorties)
• shaped like long pants (called longies)

and these are often so purty, you feel like having them on show! Plus, the longies really do take the place of clothing AND are a waterproof napy cover, all in the same item. Plus at night, they take the place of pj bottoms.

You can obviously sew your own prefolds, but it takes time to sew and time to source the materials doesn't it, so i would just buy them from booroi, if you are time poor.

SMOZ - if you have a gran happy to knit - LUCKY YOU!!!

patterns - both free (found at ozclothnappies and also nappycino)
patterns that cost - Ladybug Loops (at the minicuteture site) and there is one with Turtles in the name too.
check out the DIY KNITTING forum at nappycino, heaps of mcn knitters post there, will give you the lowdown.

Gran needs to use minimum 8 ply wool, it needs to be 100% wool, no acryllic.

Some dyes using in dyeing wool, irritate bubs. So many mcn knitters use organically dyed wool. you can find some organic wool on the sustainable hemp products site. Also the ozebaby site has some wool stores that sell skeins of suitable wool. I just skim that stuff, so read up on the nappycino DIY knitting site for the real lowdown.

Look at sites like possumpouches to see how knitters make beautiful longies. Variations include - drawstring waists or elasticated waists. Leg cuffs with moss stitch, or bands, or none.

the important difference in knitting LONGIES as opposed to WOOLLEN TROUSERS, is that the nappy has to be accomodated, so the RISE, the CROTCH is really crucial. the waist needs to be high esp if you want to get a night nappy under that longie.

no drama if you make it too big, but drama if you make it too small!
