Ali - our washing machine (14 years old) died when bilby was two months old - so i feel your annoyance. it was a PITA having dh go to the laundrette each night (i was so unwell at the time, i couldn't drive or lift) and we went without the new machine for a fortnight. so doing that with three kids, mamma mia.
I'm surprised you mention a 6.5kg machine, that doesn't sound very big for your size family. Some states have a government rebate on some washing machines, maybe to do with buying a power and water efficient one? I think it's $200 off in this state, ask the electrical goods shops in Townsville, what the QLD rebate is? might help lower the price.

I'd like to find out how to colour icing without using the usual food colouring you get at the supermarket. I've kept bilby low on sugar for nearly three years, she has never had chocolate, but i think i will end the drought when she turns three, her teethbrushing is improving.

gigi , QUEEN , which makes the usual food coulring in the baking section of the supermarket , you know , they cost about $1 been around for ages . well they make "natural food coulouing ' as well , i was on thier website , and noticed you can buy it in supermakets , like coles , i rung them to ask which ones stock it and they told me which ones in my area had it , not all coles stock it .
i found them and they are only about $8 , they come with 4 in the box - they are only small vials but they have a coulor chart so you can mix it to any coulrs you want. im so happy they have them as im careful (ok maybe to the point of near obsession) about additves and coulors ... WHY should i have to eat fake food when there is an abundance of fresh beautiful food out there ...
well , DH gave gabbi a fish finger - with the caoating off , while he was looking after the kids yesterday , and then he realised that the fish inside would have been mixed with breadcrumbs ... so sure enough i was cleaning up vomit a few hours later and had an inconsolable child :(

Gigi my washing machine is only 5kg lol I don't find it bad, one day of nappies fits and I do about 3 loads a day in total.
No nappy news here so im just lurking.
MissyMoo, i got the 7kg size washer, to allow me to be able to wash bedding. THe machine uses as much water as the load needs, so i don't have to worry about the water, for smaller loads.
Charmlea, thanks for the tip about the food colouring, will chase that up.
i have so much to learn about how to avoid additives/preservatives in processed food.
i've started buying fish fillets, instead of processed fish in supermarket boxes, have suprised myself how easy and nice it is. (and cheaper).

Just a quick one from me... tried one of the smallest prewashed nappies I have on DD it was NB size and it is still so big! Lots of leg gape LOL
But good news is pre-washing is going well so they will all be ready when she is big enough.
Am going to try some prefolds on her soon to get into the habit of cloth. I have told DP that once the sposies we were given are gone that is it - we are into cloth - he doesn't think I will last with the cloth because we started with sposies... I think he has forgotten how stubborn I can be! When he tells me I can't do something then I am more determined to do that!
Have been lurking and seeing what is happening - ok back to the washing
TK - DD wasn't in MCN's til she was about 5 or 6 weeks i think - she just wasn't big enough - flannel flats and NB covers until then. now she is pretty much full time in MCN's though her first nappy change of the morning (around 6am) i usually change her from fitted/cover to flat and cover cos i tend to keep the flats in my bedroom and almost inevitably forget to put extra fitteds in there! that first flat nappy usually gets soaked through as DD doesn't pee overnight - she waits til morning (this morning, she had a small wet at nappy change, then a huuuuuge one after she woke for the day)
ahhh, bliss - DH has been helping with nappy changes and washing! woot! damn shame he's going back to work in an hour til the weekend
WOEB - a pocket of some sort that we're checking for first time - i think it's maybe a kanga pouch or something like that... has a zippered pocket that opens on the outside... not sure DH did it up tight enough though, so this could be catastrophic!

TK - Most full term average size babies don't fit into the MCN easily to start with because of the chicken legs - so the preemies and littlies are even worse. (BTW my bubba was same weight as your DD and she was so teensy tiny the only disposables that fit her were the huggies nb brand they have in the SCU's (I wasn't doing cloth till 4 months, but yeah, only prefolds would have fit her for aaages).
JWith - I just use ordinary Canesten cream as it is water soluble and it is great because it is a proper anti-fungal and not just a barrier cream. Otherwise if you use a liner you can use whatever cream you want, even zinc.
WOEB: Dunno - Just got back from work - Daddy changed her and she's still asleep :(
Yep they are the ones we are using... and they still cover half of her body LOL - she is as you said... teensy tiny!:
DPs mum bought us some of the BabyLove (I think coles brand) Newborn nappies... they have wiggles designs on them... they kind of fit her but the huggies are a better fit

Is the Brauers Nappy Rash Relief cream safe for MCN's?? Would I need to use it with a liner or would it be fine just on its own? (i dont like liners lol)

TK - yeah, they're the ones I use now if I'm going on long trips or planes (who has room in their luggage to pack nappies ay) they're heaps cheaper than huggies. You wouldn't know my DD was that tiny born now though, she's so tall and has nice cheeks all over - time goes by too fast - enjoy the tiny dilemmas while they last. Let me know if you find something that works well in cloth for little'uns . . I'm hoping to grow a bigger bub next time but you never know and want to use cloth from home-time if possible with #2.
Ren - I don't know that brand, but if it rubs into your skin clear and/or rinses off easily with just water it should be fine, if it leaves a filmy barrier or cream on your skin you'll need to use a liner. :D

Another question :doh: does anyone else get grey colour on their inserts/nappies if left for about 48hrs? I wash my nappies every 2 days but occasionally if we're busy I don't get to wash them until another half day later and I seem to get sometimes, especially on the inserts of the pop in nappies, grey colour like the ammonia in the urine has made it go grey? And I washed them twice and the colour is still there :( :( any ideas???? Cheers.

the nappy rash creams sold in supermarket/chemist are petroleum based, barrier creams.
If you use them with mcn WITHOUT A LINER, the inner of the nappy will get a coating of the barrier cream, and this will stop the nappy working effectively. Eventaully you will need to stripwash the nappies, to get them working properly again. SO it's not that you WRECK your mcn, more that you render them ineffective, and have to take remedial action to get them working again (which is a nuisance). So trying to avoid that, is a good idea. (as you're doing).
what are your options?
- use the barrier creams (chemist and supermarket will have them, petroleum based) WITH a liner.
- buy some nonpetroleum based nappy rash salves for next time
e.g Simmons pawpaw salve in the yellow packaging,
there's another organic one in a black tube,
but avoid the Lucas paw paw salve in the red packaging (target is flogging these).
There is also Moo Goo moisturer,
Nature's Cradle Healing hemp balm,
google "bottom balm" and i'm sure you'll find more.
I was advised (by mcn gurus) to use the nonpetroleum based ones AT THE FIRST SIGN of nappy rash.
For 14 months, a dab of the waterbased ones, was all my bub needed, to make the initial NR signs go away.
But at 14 months, she got REALLY bad NR, and that's when i called in The Big Guns, and used the petroleum based one, until it got under control.
It's good to have some of both on hand, to be prepared for when it happens.
i managed to buy organic, waterbased nappy rash salves at real life organic baby shops in my city too, as well as online.
Some health food shops sell the Weleda Nappy Change cream and the Simmons pawpaw salve.
Nappy rash PREVENTION is another idea (for the future)
some ideas
- avoid supermarket baby wipes, and use cloth wipes with water instead.
The only supermarket wipes i found without SLS or propylene glycol, were the NatureBabycare ones. I kept those for the nappy going out bag. You save heaps of money too, by using the cloth wipes and water.
- use a super mild washing detergent to wash teh nappies in (the perfumes, colours, etc in normal strength wash detergents - and even in OMo Sensitive - can be too much for babies skin. You CAN buy detergent that is mild enough in the supermarket, look out for Ecostore, Planet Aware and Euca.
- give your bub nappy free time at least once a day ( i used a Swaddlebees matrees protector for this, so when baby piddles, you just put the mat in the wash, no carpet or floor to clean up.)
- at nappy change time, after you clean the bottom, pat it dry with a dry cloth, or if temperature allows, let them kick around naked for a few minutes, so when you do up the new nappy, bottom is entirely dry. Nappy rash thrives in warm, dark places.
- change baby when they poop as soon as you can
- if you are new to mcn, realise that you need to change bubs more often, than you do in disposables
- if your bub reacts to any particular nappies (the inner layers) take note of which ones, so you can find out if they have a particular reaction to various fabrics. e.g some bubs cannot tolerate suedecloth, which is the stay dry fabric used on many pocket and aio nappies. Once you know what to avoid, you just make sure you dont' buy that fabric inner again.

Can't wait to give them a go on bub today :p
the grey coulor is degration of the bamboo ,it happens mostly on my ittis ... maybe soak the nappies in plain water or rinse them under the tap beofre they go in the bucket to dilute the wee !

I use Ecostore because I get itchy from normal washing powder and it's devine. It has a really soft light smell and the clothes smell so yummy when you hang them out to dry.
Good to know you can use it for MCN's! Now I don't have to track down something else!

Just a query re washing - Blake's had his 2 month vaccinations this morning. How should I be washing his nappies? He had the rotovirus vaccine. The nurse said it could take up to 3 weeks for it to finish entering his nappies. I'm not going to do disposables for that long (haven't put him in one yet since having his vaccs). My hot water service only goes to 50 deg. Is this likely to be hot enough to wash it out safely? I don't fancy hiking down to the laundromat every couple of days to wash nappies at 60deg.

Liz, i don't know anyone, for whom vaccinations, have caused nappies to be different. bilby had the rotavirus vax too (JUST before it became free!) and no-one said anything to me, so i kept her in mcn, didn't notice any diff. But in last year, i have noticed, every so often, there will be a thread in the nappy section of various parenting forums, re "should i put my child in sposies for X time after rota virus"? and heaps of people reply, and the overwhelming number of responses say "no, we didn't and it was fine". Pity i can't remember any of the scientific reasons, all my memory recalls is, was the general gist. So don't worry hon.
Teagz - Woollies and Coles stock Gaia, Coles stocks Avado, and they all stock Ecostore too (for baby products like moisturiser, shampoo, bath calmer stuff etc). They are the three brands i notice, in supermarkets, that look safe for kids in the ingredients list. So many other things SAY they're organic, or "safe for newborn skin", but it's all marketing hype, cos when you read their list of ingredients, it makes a mockery of "organic", "safe for nb skin" etc.
i'm using Moo Goo Milk Wash on bilby for washing her skin, which is also very mild. For the first 12 months, i didn't use any of those products, as my midwife said "just water" was fine for a young bub's skin.
Finding a sunscreen i could use on bilby was a challenge, she rashed up to supermarket and chemist ones that claimed to be "for sensitive skins", "suitable for babies" etc, and now i hunt down the organic ones that are paraben free. Parabens (a very cheap preservative that causes skin irritation in some people) are in SO many products! it's astounding! my skin and her skin has improved so much, since i junked everything in our bathroom (and my makeup drawer) that had parabens in it.

Shanti - lots of people report teh nappy fabrics staining grey after panadol use, something to do with the artifical sweetener in the medicine??? help me out, those of you with better memories. It didn't happen with our nappies, and we used heaps of baby panadol at first, but i did Little Squirt the nappies and do a daily wash in 60 degrees hot water (spot the OCD person here ha ha).
loads of people report being able to "sun out" the panadol stains, so i hope that works for you too. So don't give up hope, you might be able to get those stains out after all. (i could just imagine your sad face, when you typed "have i ruined them!!! - awwww).

I'm doing the nappy hunt as well. Found 5 last night but having trouble with the extreme ones. DH was trying to help but he had an op yesterday so he wasnt particularly helpful! A good thing that came out of his operation is that we had to drive to the city for the surgery, and it was only 10 mins from there to one of the only shops in adelaide that sell MCN so I got to rub a lot of fluff! I couldn't help myself and got a pink starbunz puppy dog cover - with tail! I can't wait to see grace crawling around in it.

Just did my first strip wash, I accidentally put too much liquid in the wash this morning :doh: and thought, well why not just then do a strip wash? At least we have some sun today and they will dry quicker!
