Cloth Nappy General Discussion #193

on rainy days (prety often in melb!) i have the sock/peg/hook things? noit sure what they are, there like a hook with a frame full of pegs... i think its to dry socks n undies on? i use that for the inserts and put the shells and inserts that dont fit on the clothes horse, works prety good.

df thinks im going crazy, i ran out of wipes, so cut up a old flanellett wrap, first time bub hasnt screamed threw a pooey bum change! so im going to get some itti ones and only use the chuck-out wipes when we are out!

I rarely use disposable wipes on DD now unless it's for face/mitt wipers or if I haven't been able to do washing. DD also has a habit of stealing the cloth wipes (cheap facewashers from woolies) to clean up any little spill so I quite often run out. I think the cloth wipes are a lot faster to clean up poo and you don't have to wrestle with the tub dropping the disposable wipes down :lol:

WOCB: black/red daisy abby gro but she needs a change again. she's drinking buckets of water today!

I have some itti wipes... they're nice, but like CL i like my cheap woolies flannels better. the itti wipes just don't seem to have the texture to get it all off, you need to wipe a few times. whereas the flannels its just one quick fluid motion (haha) plus they're alot bigger.

oh yeah, they were so easy!! dd1 done a horrid one that would normaly take me upwards of 5 wipes, only used 2 and dd2 only needed one with hers, less fuss and so easy!(as long as dd1 dont get her hands on the water:lol:)

wok&bb... no idea there both asleep and due for a change....(always the way!)

I only use cloth wipes. We were given a stack of disposable wipes when I was pregnant, and I have given away what I can, because we just don't use them. When we're out, I use flannelette squares made from old linen, they're nice and trim, and I just wet them down with a moisturiser-water combo. At home we use Ikea face washers, I keep a stack of them dry, and have a sealable container of water with Ecostore baby wash in it, and I dunk the wipes in there to clean up.

Cloth wipes are waaaaaay more efficient. I have changed a LOT of nappies in my lifetime! Also, easier with cloth nappies, because they all go in the same bin!

WONB: Fuchsia itti. It's a small, so this is probably its last wear on this little girl. Booooooooooooooo.

Hi all...

My MCN journey is just starting... Don't know too much about stuff but I've just ordered 3 different nappies to try.
ATM I have 3 babyland cheapo mcn's, which are ok considering the price ($10). And I have a peapod which I will try later once it's dry.
I've also been thinking about using cloth wipes, for a few reasons...
1. I hate wiping DS with a cold wipe, especially when he is asleep.
2. If I'm washing nappies and towels (from nappy free time) I might as well make the most of a load and do wipes also.
3. The first time we changed his MCN and I took to him with disposable wipes I thought... Now what the f* do I do with the wipes?! I can't roll them up in the nappy and I'm still throwing stuff out! Lol.

A few questions...
How often do you wash your nappies?
What is your nappy wash routine? Where do you soak/store your dirty nappies while waiting to wash?

Hi jaki nice to see you in here!!! I wash daily, but I have 3 little bums in cloth nappies. I have a nappy bucket that I chuck the nappies (and wipes) into, just into an empty bucket after I have washed the poop off. Then I chuck in washing machine at the end of the day, do a pre wash in cold, then a wash in warm with a little bit of earth choice liquid and canestan rinse aid. Then I do two rinses in cold. That's it!

I haven't been in here lately because I've been very slack and have been using sposies for a while now (I know, i'll even stand here and cop the eggs that you all will throw at me!) and can't seem to get back into the grove of mcn's! I think I need help!
DS's has been doing some awful poo's lately as he is getting his eye teeth and it is much nicer to just throw the poo away rather than scrape it down the toilet.
I know that one thing that would encourage me to use MCN again would be a little squirt but I can't afford one at the moment so that's out of the question! Any other ideas?
I really don't like spending money on sposies every fortnight but am feeling so lazy!! Argh! Snap me out of it someone!!!

quick question.... how many nb naps can fit in regular post bag??

For a while we were using one of those shower heads you attach to a tap. Kal water is high chlorine content so it split in 3 months. Someone was saying their DH made a LS from stuff bought at bunnings. Maybe have a look into that?

thanks guys! i did just chuck the inserts in the dryer and i hug the shells on my clothes airer on the front verandah they dried before the inserts did lol

we use cloth wipes here... somuch nicer and way easier i find plus we are saving LOADS of money... wipes seem to be one thing i dont over buy ROFL

I took mine but I was staying with my parents and the ILs so had access to washers and dryers. I only used sposies on the last day so I could get all the nappies clean and dry. Had to smother DD's bum with pawpaw cream though to stop the sposies reacting.

Stoked - I don't eat eggs, so I'll lob a box of egg replacer ;) It was me that had the DIY little squirt. Google it, and if you know someone who's at all handy, you can get it done for $30. We have an adjustable garden hose trigger nozzle. It's awesome. We also have a poo fork and poo brush in a jar beside the toilet.

Jaki - welcome! thrilled you are doing cloth! I wash something every day, nappies are probably about every three days, with little miss in cloth full time, and not a prolific poo-er. I wash in earth choice - and easing in to ecostore powder again, as it caused a rash when we first tried it, although maybe that was coincidence.

Bexie - We just did a 5 day Melbourne trip with cloth. We only took pockets and Ai2s and fleece shelled nappies, so we could chuck the inserts in the dryer (Melbourne weather can't be trusted! :rolleyes:) And I made a supersize wetbag that we hung in our hotel room.
We're doing a 16 day central Qld road trip (and seeing Jaki on the way!) so will be having another clothie adventure soon!

Sorry stoked. Want me to throw an ice pack your way? :lol: Poo fork is just a cheapie wooden fork from Ikea, with "POO" written on it in permanent marker. I actually don't use it, but DH can't angle the hose quite right, so he prefers that.

WONB: Nothing. She is on a towel on the floor, farting and singing her bare bum song. Quite cute.

Audax- W poops in every nappy atm!! It's still quite pasty so I've been using a wee bit of toot paper to peel it off. A poo fork could work too tho :)

Another question... Do you all wear gloves or anything when rinsing the nappies out? It's not his poop that bothers me (I used to make a good living out of poop, lol) it's the fact that I'm paranoid about not washing my hands well enough then handling his breast shield.

Lol, ok cool. I presume rubber washing up gloves? I have disposable gloves but that would be silly now wouldn't it? Kinda defeats the point, lol.

yup Jaki, i use gloves! just the same as my dishwashing ones (but 2 seperate pairs obviously!) more a paranoia of getting it under my nails and easier to remove gloves and quickly wash my hands then doing a big scrub when i have to drop n run for the older ones.

AFL or state of origin? Bonnibuns does state of origin ones and B cheeks do AFL. They're mates so they try to do similar yet different stuff.

I have to potty train DD. 3 nappies in an hour soaked through and she's just soaked yet another nappy and pair of pants after 40 minutes. It's not a case of needing to stripwash either, they're actually SATURATED. Also when she wakes up in the morning her 15-18kg rated huggies nappy suddenly resembles a marshmallow (she's 11.5kg). Her bits are looking red from all the wee even though I change it as soon as I can which is usually only 10 minutes tops. We've run out of abby gro and bbh nappies and onto emergencies Well at least I'll only have one in cloth when bub comes along.

WOCB: Bonnibuns emergency backup while the Abby Gro inserts in the dryer finish up.

WMM - there is a store in Brisbane, Nest Nappies, that I love to go to. Bonny of Bonnibuns also used to do my local market, so I have a few of hers. But I mostly buy online, and have used a bunch of sites: Nature's Cradle, Darlings Down Under, Nurture Nappies, The Nappy Bucket are a few. I also buy from the FB site, and from the makers sites as well.

OK, confession... I don't like my AbbyGro. It just doesn't fit well on my little bunny. I am glad I only have one. :hide: Best fit in this house is front snapping GFs. Who'da thunk it?
Actually, Mel, been meaning to ask... since our babies seem to be polar opposites shape wise (mine has big thighs, short waist) what nappies did you hate? :lol: Cos I think I might like them! Wing droop is our friend here.
